英语中有关duck的趣味习语

提到鸭子，你会想到什么呢？北京烤鸭(Beijing roast duck)，哺乳动物鸭嘴兽(duck－billed platypus)，还是卡通形象唐老鸭（Donald Duck）？安徒生童话(Andersen’s fable)中《丑小鸭的故事》可谓是家喻户晓，现在an ugly duckling用来指那些刚开始好像没有什么出息而后来出人头地的人。从谚语Prate is prate;but it is the duck that lays the eggs. （空谈是空谈；但生蛋的总是鸭子），可知duck原来是母鸭。此谚语的意思是空谈无用，成功还是要采取能成功的手段。公鸭是drake，小鸭是duckling。Duck还可指人，口语里面我们可以用duck, ducky, ducks来称呼自己喜爱的亲近的人。例如：Come and sit beside me, duck.（亲爱的，来坐我旁边）。下面我们来一起学习有关duck的趣味习语。

1.dead duck

someone or something that is very unlikely to be successful,especially because of a mistake or bad judgment 没有任何希望的事或物

死鸭子当然是无药可救了，所以dead duck口语里指被放弃的或将失败的计划，特别是因为犯错或判断失误。

【例句】Thanks to the lack of market research, the project was a dead duck right from the start. 由于缺乏市场调研，这个工程从一开始就没有什么希望。

2.sitting duck

someone or something that is very easy for an enemy to shoot or attack 容易受骗的人；易被打击的对象

要射中正在游水的鸭子并非易事，但如果鸭子呆着不动，就很容易被射中。sitting duck指的是容易被骗或受到伤害的人。有时它甚至会处于一个毫无希望的境地，给予它任何帮助都无济于事。

【例句】With their bullets all gone, the soldiers were sitting ducks for the enemy.子弹全部用光了，战士们现在很容易受敌人攻击。

3.lame duck

(a)an unsuccessful person or thing不中用的人或事物；(b)in American politics,an elected official whose power is reduced because the person who will replace them has already been elected（美）即将下台的政界人物

来自《伊索寓言》中奴隶安德鲁克里斯和鸭子的故事。这个短语很有趣，从字面上看意思是“跛足鸭”，鸭子走起路来本来就一摇三摆，再加上跛足，那更是举步维艰，一筹莫展了。因此，lame duck的第一个意思就是：不能有效地做事的人或机构，不中用的人，经常带有贬义；另一个意思是：任期将满的官员。在美国政界，常用lame duck来形容任期将届满的政治人物的窘境，尤其是第二任期快结束的总统。

【例句】The government should not waste money supporting lame ducks. 政府不应该浪费资金去扶持那些无望的企业。

Most people expect the present prime minister will become a lame duck after the general election.大多数人预计现任总理将在大选时竞选失败。

4.take to sth. like a duck to water

to discover when you start to do something for the first time that you have a natural ability to do it 如鱼得水；轻而易举

鸭子下水时，必定毫不犹豫、无所畏惧、轻而易举。这一习惯用语就是指做起事来非常自然，毫不费力，和汉语里的“如鱼得水”有着异曲同工之妙。

【例句】He plays football,taking to fatherhood like a duck to water. 他踢起球来就像鸭子下水般轻而易举。

5.play ducks and drakes

spend (esp. one’s money) in a careless wasteful way 挥霍无度

duck和drake都是指鸭子，运用头韵(alliteration)的修辞方法，更富有节奏感和韵律美。这是一种常见的游戏，指在河边拣起小石子把它们一个个扔到水面上，看是否能激起水漂，这当然会惊动河里的鸭子，所以取名为play ducks and drakes。而游戏一旦玩得兴起，就难以罢手，直到把河边的小石子捡得差不多为止，所以现在这条短语就被用来形容一个人花钱像扔石子般随意和无节制，有“挥霍无度”的含义。

【例句】Little Peter spends his money like his playing ducks and drakes.His parents spoilt him by giving him too much pocket money.小彼得挥霍无度，父母给他太多零用钱，把他宠坏了。

6.water off a duck’s back

(esp. of criticisms, etc.) without any effect (on sb.) 毫无作用

鸭子身上的毛就像雨衣一样，表面有一层天然的油脂，有效地阻止了水分的渗入。因此，我们可以看到每次鸭子从水里出来，只要抖抖身上的羽毛，附在上面的水珠就全被甩掉了。中文里有“落汤鸡”的说法而没有“落汤鸭”之说，大概就是这个原因吧。为此，water off a duck’s back 指毫无作用，被像鸭子抖羽毛一样抖掉了。

【例句】The doctors tell us it’s dangerous to smoke, but such good advice rolls off some people like water off a duck’s back.医生都告诉我们抽烟对身体是有害的。可是，这种劝告对于有些人来说就像耳边风一样，毫无作用。

7.duck soup

an extremely easy task or assignment 不费吹灰之力的事；小菜一碟

这一惯用语和a piece of cake意思相同，最早出现在报纸上的政治性讽刺漫画上，是著名漫画家T.A. Dorgan于1902年所绘，1908年在一个叫H.C. Fisher的人的作品中再次露面。duck soup为什么代表一件易事，难道是因为抓一只鸭子来做汤很容易吗？也有道理，既然sitting duck可以这么轻松就手到擒来，那煮一道鸭汤当然也是“小菜一碟”了。还有一种可能就是，鸭子体内富含油脂，因此很容易入味，做出来的汤分外鲜美。
