so as to， in order to， so that， in order that， so...as to和so...that

so as to和in order to 意为“为了……， 以便……”，用来引导目的状语。但是so as to 不能置于句子的开头。比如，可以说 In order to get to the company on time， he got up early，但是不能说So as to get to the company on time， he got up early。

so that和in order that意思与前面一组差不多，表示“为了……，目的在于……”，但它们引导的是从句。与so as to一样，so that不能置于句首。

so...as to和so...that 意为“如此……以至于……”，so后面接形容词或副词。这两者的区别是，so...as to后面接不定式，so...that则引导一个表示结果的状语从句。比如He is so kind as to help others at all times一句，也可以表达成He is so kind that he helps others at all times.

be known as意为“作为……而著名”，as后面一般接表示“身份、职业”的词或短语。

be known for意为“因……而著名”，for后面接表示“某人、某物的特点、特长”的词或短语。

be known to意为“为……所知”，to后面接表示“人、群体、地域”的词或短语。

before long，long before和long ago

before long意为“不久以后，很快”，相当于soon，用在将来时或过去时中。

long before意为“老早，早就”，一般用在句末，表示“比过去某时早得多的时间”，通常与过去完成时连用。要注意的是，有时可以在句子中间看见long before，比如She had left long before his return。这时的long before并不是一个短语，而是独立的两部分，意为“在……的很久以前”，long之前的谓语往往使用过去完成时。

long ago意为“很久以前”，表示的是“从现在算起的很久以前”，通常与一般过去时连用。
