0引言

高校英语专业英语教学中,听说读写译是语言的基本功,基本功的训练是英语教学的首要任务。其中,写作是英语专业技能课程中的必修课,“写”往往是英语技能中最薄弱最不易提升的环节,是英语教学中的重点也是难点。笔者通过长期英语专业写作教学的实践,总结摸索出一套行之有效的教学策略,而这些策略皆是在人文关怀的观照下产生的,现进行条分缕析,以供交流参考。

1注重培养写作兴趣

兴趣是增强记忆、决定学习效率和学习热情的重要因素,对英语专业写作教学而言,在兴趣的导引下,学生将会把枯燥的写作课程转化为愉悦的体验过程,并能够积极主动进行课外学习和实践,从而加强自身的思维能力和创新能力,写作水平自然也会显著提高。

然而,我们目前看到的却是大多数学生觉得写作课索然无味,没什么兴趣,这里面除了我国学生对非母语的语言敏感性不够强以及自身没有足够的输入等原因之外,笔者认为我们的写作教学尚缺乏人文关怀,以致一定程度上没有激发学生的写作兴趣,或者说学生原本有写作兴趣,却被打压下去了。那么如何在写作中使学生感受到人文关怀,产生兴趣呢?

1.1 鼓励发言与讨论每个学生的写作内容和风格是完全不同的。因此,教师不妨鼓励他们踊跃发表自己的看法,思想和意见,倾听他们的心声,这无疑是人文关怀的体现。另外,在给学生展示范文时,教师也应独具匠心,最好展示一好一坏两篇文章,让学生自己选出哪篇文章好,并说出不好的那篇文章不好在哪里,要具体指出来,不能泛泛而谈。通过一段时间此项训练,笔者发现,自己班级的学生语言敏感性增强了,语言鉴赏能力提高了,对英语写作的兴趣也渐趋浓厚。

1.2 勿滥用表扬目前一些高校采取学生对教师评分的办法,以促进教师教学,有的还将评分结果纳入教师考核成绩,然而此法带来的弊端是部分教师为迎合学生,对学生错误之处言辞闪烁含糊,不予明确指出,对够不上表扬的地方也会去表扬,动不动学生就会得到“Good job!”,这种状况是令人堪忧的。教师真正意义上给予学生人文关怀,就应当恰如其分地表扬学生,学生尚处于成长阶段,人生观世界观还都有局限,错误之处在所难免,对此要及时纠正,满怀爱心地注视他们成长的足迹,才是教师的职责所在。

2写作与阅读并重

“读书破万卷,下笔如有神。”是放之四海而皆准的真理,英语写作课如不要求学生大量阅读,很难想象学生写作水平会得到提升。人文关怀下的英语写作教学,应指导学生阅读的内容、范围,并对阅读心得进行讨论,或写成书面报告,总之,一定要求学生不间断地、有规律地进行阅读活动。

笔者曾要求学生定期阅读美国《时代》周刊,浏览人民网、新华网等英文网站,了解时事动态,并且阅读著名英美作家所写的诗歌,因为诗歌是语言的高度浓缩与提炼。学生坚持两学期之后,在英语遣词造句方面进步显著,思辨能力也有所提高,对两学期前自己所写的作文能提出中肯的修改意见。

3要求学生保存作文

学生每写一次作文,都是心血的付出,有的学生下笔前拿不准,要翻好多次字典,要尊重学生的劳动,同样也是人文关怀的体现。熟悉英语写作教学的人都知道,有些语病学生会不止一次地出现,让他们回顾自己写的文章,自己都会对里面简单的小错误发出会心的微笑。教育部外语教学指导委员会委员黄源深先生指出“学生的语言错误不是靠教师一两次批改就能改掉的,批改只是一种手段,一种对语言错误的警示。对某一错误的认识和改正,需要通过交际语境,经过多次反复才能完成。写作课教师千万不能把学生改正错误的希望寄托在一次批改上。”所以,要求学生保存作文,一方面可以让他们觉察到自己的进步,另一方面可以让他们自己看到某一错误他们犯了多少次,从而从意识上刻意避免这类错误。

4灵活运用现代科技手段

对于外语学习来说,并非所有的语言输入都能被学习者理解、吸收,仅有语言输入是不够的,学习者还需注意到输入中未知的语言成分,并通过与他人的交流进行意义协商,积极地建构自己的语言系统。交流又有口头交流和书面交流,除了课堂上的口头交流,及使用多媒体课件令课堂丰富多彩外,教师可利用网络等现代科技在课外与学生书面交流,教师可建立与学生的公共电子邮箱,鼓励学生可把日常生活的所见所想或对社会现象的思考用英文表达出来,可长可短,放在邮箱里,学生和教师都可以看,发表评论、留言,教师可在课堂上集中点评。构建这样一个协作学习的平台,主要目的是督促学生多练习写作,让学生体会到人与人之间沟通交流的意义,培养学生发现问题、解决问题的能力。

5结束语

大学英语专业写作教学任重道远,本着人文关怀精神,真正关心学生,了解学生,为学生着想,培养学生写作兴趣,从细节上关爱学生,尊重学生,令学生养成勤于阅读的习惯,灵活运用现代科技手段促进教学,注重培养学生思维能力和创新能力,将会使写作教学有声有色,令写作成为学生愉快而又难忘的人生体验。

作为英语学习听、说、读、写和译五个方面的一面,英语写作是最能体现学习者对语言运用的综合能力的,因为写作既是学生表达思想、观点的过程,又是学生运用语言进行思维创作的过程。随着对英语运用水平要求的不断提高,英语写作越来越受到英语教师的重视,对英语写作教学的研究整体上呈不断上升之势,研究主体涵盖了写作教学、写作结果、写作过程、写作环境因素、读者反馈和写作评估等各方面。然而,国内英语写作教学的总体形势依然不容乐观,研究成果和教学实践的结合没有得到切实的实现,且即使学生写出了流畅毫无语法错误的作文,在外国教师的眼中,这些文章也被冠上了唆、华而不实之名,并被认为不符合英语的文化思维,是明显的中国式英语作文。这主要是因为学生一直以来都使用汉语思维进行写作创作,所以写出来的英语作文受浓厚的汉语修辞模式的影响。写作的过程和内容都呈现了学生的思维过程,英语和汉语两种语言由于属于不同的语系和文化体系,语言运用规则和思维表达方式都存在很大的差异。因此,要想提高学生的写作水平,不仅要增加语言知识,还需要提高学生的语言运用能力,更重要的是提高学生在英语修辞方式下运用语言的能力。笔者认为,学习英语不仅是学习英语这一门语言,还要了解该语言所包含的文化和思维方式。这样当我们运用语言时,才能真正做到准确、恰当。在英语教学中,英语教师应注重学生对于文化、修辞模式的了解。本文试图通过比较英、汉两种语言在修辞模式上的差异,在此基础上找出改进大学英语写作教学的方法和途径。

《大学英语写作》是一门针对非英语专业学生开设的英语课。对于非英语专业的学生来说,其对英语文化的了解仅限于《大学英语》课上教师的零星讲解,因此基本对英语文化和思维模式没有什么了解。这就造成了学生在写英语作文时几乎完全按照汉语思维模式行文,写出带有浓厚汉语味道的中国式作文。为帮助学生写出地道的英语作文,有必要加强对非英语专业学生英语文化和思维模式的输入,帮助学习者了解这两种语言文化和思维模式的差异,采用符合学习者实际学习情况的教学方法和手段开展写作教学。下面通过分析英汉两种语言在修辞模式上的差异,以及其对大学英语写作教学的启示,探讨适合中国学生的教学方式和技巧。

一、英汉修辞模式差异在写作上的表现

1.观点表达差异

大学英语写作大多都是议论文的写作,议论文写作中避免不了观点的表达,作文中观点的表达反映了价值观的不同。用何种人称表达,站在什么角度发表观点,英语和汉语是不同的。就议论文来讲,英汉文章大都用第一人称,但据统计,英语文章用第一人称单数和复数各占一半,而汉语文章绝大多数都用第一人称复数。这是因为英语文化中强调个人和个人的作用,提倡个性化和自由,个性和独立思考受到高度重视,长期以来的言论自由使得人们发表看法的环境相对宽松,因此英语中很多用于表达观点的词或短语强调的都是个人观点,如“in my opinion”,“personally”,“I think”,“as for me”,“in my view”,“Ithink/believe/hold”,等等。与此相反,汉语强调的是个体包含在整体中的群体价值取向,强调天人合一的“大一统”观点,个人在社会中的地位、作用和意见一直都是弱化的。即使到了现在,维护整体利益仍然是主流的价值取向,集体意识仍然是意识形态的主流,这使得人们在表达观点时,更倾向于使用代表大多数人意见的人称代词,如“我们”、“大家”等。写英语作文时,学生常会不自觉地将这种思维方式带到作文中,造成了中国学生的英语作文中个人意见表达模糊不清的问题,套话和空话比较多。

2.语篇修辞模式的差异

由于受“天人合一”思维文化的影响,汉语思维注重语篇的整体性,追求的是整体而不是部分。以意念为主轴,以神统形,文章先发散开去再回来收拢,发展呈螺旋形,条理层次呈现隐形关系,语篇中短句多,句子结构松散,组合自由。英语文化因为强调的是人与自然的对立及人对自然的征服,这种对立思维使得西方人养成了理性思考、逻辑思辨的习惯,表现在语篇结构上,则为文章的逻辑性强,开篇直入主题,层层深入,层层剖析,最后得出结论。此外,英语语篇注重篇章的结构和主题句,重视过渡连接词的关联作用,因此连接词的使用远比汉语频繁。

二、英汉修辞模式差异对大学英语写作教学改革的启示

基于英汉两种语言文化引起的两个民族在修辞模式上的差异,造成的英汉语在语篇组织和观点表达上的差异,造成许多中国学生写出的英语作文带有很浓的汉语味道。为帮助学生写出更加地道的英语作文,有必要对现有的英语写作课的教学方式做出必要的改进,帮助学生写出更加符合英语修辞习惯的作文。

1.强化英语文化的输入

一直以来,国内英语课程的教学都偏重词汇、语法的教学,重点让学生识记单词、阅读文章,强调的是各种语言技能的掌握,而对于西方文化的输入则很少。正是这种文化输入的缺少,造成中国学生在写作英语作文时,只能借助已有的汉语思维模式组织语言,连句成篇,这样写出来的文章难免带有汉语味道,难怪外国教师评价中国学生的英语作文“华而不实”、“晦涩难懂”。为了帮助学生写出地道的英语作文,有必要强化对学生英语文化的输入,让学生了解英语文化及英语的修辞模式,了解英汉语修辞模式的差异,在英语修辞模式下写出真正地道的英语作文。

2.有针对性地开展英汉语对比分析

为帮助学生写出地道的英语作文,除需强化英语文化的输入外,写作课教师在写作教学中还应注重对英语两种语言的文化进行对比分析,比较两种语言在思维模式、话语结构、价值体系等方面的异同。通过比较分析,正确指导学生有意识地分析两种语言在词汇、语法和文化方面的差异,尽力克服母语负迁移的影响。具体来说,在写作选词方面,要准确把握词义,注意词语的文化差异。在句子结构方面,英语重形合,逻辑性强,连词、被动句使用较多;汉语则重意合,句子多无明确主语,短句多,句子多靠内在的意思相联系,连词使用较少。在语篇方面,英语的线性思维(linear thought pattern)(俞理明,2004:76)习惯直入主题,开门见山,直截了当地提出观点和看法,再逐步进行分析,最后得出结论;汉语的螺旋式思维(circular thought pattern)(俞理明,2004:76)则习惯避开主题,先铺垫,再入主题。通过有针对性地对比英汉语之间的差异,能够增强学生的意识,形成良好的英语语感,在写作英语作文时就不会借用汉语的规则,写出的英语作文会更符合英语文化的思维模式。

3.重视错误分析

英语的几项技能中,写作是最难培养的一项技能。在写作过程中,学习者难免会出现这样或那样的错误。面对出现的错误,教师无须过度夸大和强调,错误的出现其实是学习者在运用所学的语言规则进行验证的结果。学习者将已经学到的语言规则应用到实际写作中,有些能够正确使用,而有些则由于不当使用出现了错误。通过分析错误的特征、类型和比重,教师就可以了解学习者的现有英语水平及学习的困难所在。掌握了这些信息,教师就可以根据学习者的情况,有效调整教学策略和方法,更好地服务于学生,帮助学生写出符合英语语法规则和修辞模式的地道的英语作文。

三、结语

通过对比分析英汉两种语言在修辞模式上的差异,发现由于受文化和习惯的影响,英汉两种语言在观点表达和语篇模式上存在很大差异,这是造成中国学生写作英语作文不够地道的主要原因之一。在教授《大学英语写作》这门课时,教师有必要在教学方式和技巧上采取相应的措施,如重视课堂上英语文化的输入,有针对性地开展英汉语言对比分析,同时注重对学生作文中出现的错误进行分析,帮助学生避免由于英汉语言修辞模式差异造成作文表达的不地道等问题,写出既符合英语语法规则又符合英语文化要求的英语作文。
