Abstract. Multimedia network teaching, as a new teaching method, has been widely applied in English teaching of colleges and universities at present. Multimedia and network technology are necessities for the reform of English teaching of colleges and universities, and also point out a clear direction for the reform of English teaching of colleges and universities. In this paper, the advantages and problems of multimedia network teaching and the specific measures for promoting multimedia network teaching are analyzed, and also how to play the role of multimedia in promoting English teaching of colleges and universities is discussed, for the purpose of improving the quality of teaching and deepening teaching reform.

Along with the development of information education, multimedia technology and network technology have been widely applied in english teaching of colleges and universities. How to carry out English teaching by using the advantages of existing multimedia network has been proven to be an issue which is necessary for all colleges and universities to study.

1. Advantages of Multimedia Network Teaching

1.1. Traditional teaching method is broken by multimedia network teaching

The disadvantages of traditional teaching shortcomings are overcome by multimedia network teaching, and thus precious class hours are saved. The multimedia information capacity is great, and also information communication speed is very fast. At computer multimedia classrooms, computer, slide show and product projection can be used by teachers to substitute for traditional blackboard writing, and thus not only time can be saved and also the amount of teaching information can be enlarged within unite time.

1.2. Students' self-learning ability is trained by multimedia network teaching

Multimedia network technology owns rich information resources, and provides a broad space for the training of students' self-learning ability.

1.3. Interaction in classroom teaching is strengthened by multimedia network teaching

In the multimedia network teaching, teachers change into instructors and organizers, and students take initiative to think under the guidance of teachers; teachers and students communicate with each other and commonly discuss questions; the questions of students can be reported to teachers through the network, so as to let teachers provide answers; through the network, teachers can assign homework and arrange discussion to students, and can know well the learning conditions of students at any time and then make an adjustment to teaching arrangement according to the actual situation. Such an interactive teaching method is more convenient for teachers to know students.

3.3. Designing class structure

In the multimedia network teaching environment, the basic factors composing classroom teaching structure include teacher, media and the students. However, it is necessary to make these factors organically gathered and form a systemic structure, for the purpose of achieving the best teaching effect.

3.3.1 Changing the role of teacher

It is necessary for teachers to make a unified planning for the learning of students at all stages according to school skills training goal, and then allow students to make a free choice within the scope according to their own foundation and interest. In this process, it is necessary for teachers to play a guiding role and provide timely intervention if finding out problems, aiming at implementing a personalized guide.

3.3.2 Designing the self-learning of students

In the learning process, it is necessary to give full play to students' initiative, give a reflection to the pioneering spirit of students, and also allow students to have a variety of opportunities for applying what they have learnt under different situations and form the understanding of objective things and the solutions of practical problems according to the feedback information of their own actions.

3.3.3 Optimizing and combining multimedia

It is necessary to optimize and combine multimedia, provide a clear knowledge structure, and also design aided courseware and electronic teaching plans helpful for the reference, thinking and exploration of students according to the characteristics of all sorts of multimedia.

3.4. Improving the construction of question bank and changing the way of examination

Examination is the most fundamental and the most important way of measuring and checking teaching quality in education.

According to the specific requirements of courses, certain levels of standardized questions as well as question banks can be established by colleges and universities with multimedia network technology, and also continuous update and improvements should be made to question banks and students are allowed to freely select a time and have a test at computer within a certain period of times.

3.5. Strengthening the construction of language laboratory

The construction of language laboratory is the material foundation for multimedia network teaching.

The implementation of multimedia network teaching requires schools to construct language laboratories as many as possible, and assure students to have enough language laboratories from the quantity for learning network courses at a fixed time. After class, students can make preview and review under the monitoring of assistants personnel and the guidance of teaching courseware, and this is helpful for the formation of the personalized learning methods of students and the development of their self-learning ability.
