Thereareanumberofreasoforthisincreaseinviolence.OnereasonisthatCoalitionandIraqiforceshavebeenconductingfocusedoperatiotobringsecuritytoBaghdad.Sidebyside,IraqiandAmericanforcesareoperatinginthecity’smostviolentareastodisruptalQaeda,captureenemyfighters,crackdownonIEDmakers,andbreakupdeathsquads.Asweengageourenemiesintheirstronghold,theseenemiesareputtingupatoughfight.InabriefinginIraqonThursday,GeneralWilliamCaldwellsaidtheoperationtosecureBaghdadhas"notmetouroverallexpectatio."Healsoexplained,"It’snocoincidencethatthesurgeinattacksagaitcoalitionforcescoincideswithourincreasedpresenceinthestreetsinBaghdad."

AnotherreasonfortherecentincreaseinattacksisthattheterroristsaretryingtoinfluencepublicopinionhereintheUnitedStates.Theyhaveasophisticatedpropagandastrategy.Theyknowtheycaotdefeatusinthebattle,sotheyconducthigh-profileattacks,hopingthattheimagesofviolencewilldemoralizeourcountryandforceustoretreat.Theycarryvideocamerasandfilmtheiratrocities,andbroadcastthemontheInternet.Theye-mailimagesandvideoclitoMiddleEasterncablenetworkslikeal-Jazeera,anditructtheirfollowerstosendthesamematerialtoAmericanjournalists,authors,andopinionleaders.Theyoperateweites,wheretheypostmeagesfortheirfollowersandreadersacrotheworld.
