Goodmorning.Thiswasagoodweekforthecauseoffreedom.OnWednesdaynightinIraq,U.S.militaryforceskilledtheterroristZarqawi.
ThekillingofZarqawiisanimportantvictoryintheglobalwaronterror.ThisJordanian-bornterroristwastheoperationalcommanderofalQaidainIraq.Heledacampaignofcarbombings,andkidnaings,andsuicideattacksthathastakenthelivesofmanyAmericanforces,internationalaidworkers,andthousandsofiocentIraqis.Zarqawihadalonghistoryofmurderandbloodshed.BeforeSeptemberthe11th,20__,heranacampinAfghanistanthattrainedterrorists--untilCoalitionforcesdestroyedthatcamp.HefledtoIraq,wherehereceivedmedicalcareandsetupoperatiowithterroristaociates.
AfterthefallofSadd文秘站版权所有am,ZarqawiwentundergroundanddeclaredhisallegiancetoOsamabinLaden,whocalledhimthe"PrinceofalQaidainIraq"anditructedterroristsaroundtheworldto"listentohimandobeyhim."ZarqawipersonallybeheadedAmericanhostagesandotherciviliainIraq;hemastermindedthedestructionoftheUnitedNatioheadquartersinBaghdad;andhewasreoiblefortheaainationofanAmericandiplomatinJordanandthebombingofhotelsinAmman.HisgoalsinIraqwereclear:Hewantedtostoptheriseofdemocracy,drivecoalitionforcesout,inciteacivilwar,andturnthatcountryintoasafehavenfromwhichalQaidacouldlaunchnewattacksonAmericaandotherfreenatio.Itead,ZarqawidiedinthefreeanddemocraticIraqthathefoughtsohardtoprevent,andtheworldisbetteroffbecausethisviolentmanwillneverkillagain.
Iraqiscanbejustlyproudoftheirnewgovernmentanditsearlystetoimprovetheirsecurity.AndAmericacanbeenormouslyproudofthemenandwomenofourArmedForces,andtheintelligenceofficerswhosuortthem.Inthepastthreeyears,ourtroohaveoverthrownacrueldictator,foughttheterroristsandiurgentshousetohouse,andtrainedIraqiforcestodefendtheirnewdemocracy.Allthewhile,theystayedonthetrailofthisbrutalterrorist,perseveringthroughyearsofnearmiesandfalseleadsandnevergivinguphope.Thisweektheygottheirman.AndallAmericaaregratefulfortheirremarkableachievement.
Zarqawiisdead,butthedifficultandnecearymiioninIraqcontinues.Intheweeksahead,violenceinIraqmayescalate.TheterroristsandiurgentswillseektoprovethattheycancarryonwithoutZarqawi.AndCoalitionandIraqiforcesareseizingthismomenttostriketheenemiesoffreedominIraqatthistimeofuncertaintyfortheircause.TheworkaheadwillrequiremoresacrificeandthecontinuedpatienceoftheAmericanpeople.
I’mencouragedbyPrimeMinisterMaliki’sdeterminationtodefeatourcommonenemiesandbringsecurityandruleoflawtoallIraqis.Thisweekhetookanothermajorsteptowardthisobjectivewhenhecompletedtheformationofhiscabinet--naminganewMinisterofDefee,anewMinisteroftheInterior,andanewMinisterofStateforNationalSecurity.Thesenewleaderswillhelpthegovernmentaddreitstoppriorities:reconciliation,recotruction,andputtinganendtothekidnaings,beheadings,andsuicidebombings.
Astheypursuethesegoals,theywillhaveAmerica’sfullsuort.OnMonday,IwillconvenemynationalsecurityteamandotherkeymembersofmyCabinetatCampDavidtodiscuthewayaheadinIraq.OnTuesday,Iraq’snewAmbaadortotheUnitedStateswilljoinus,andwewillhaveateleconferencediscuionwithPrimeMinisterMalikiandmembersofhiscabinet.TogetherwewilldeterminehowtobestdeployAmerica’sresourcesinIraqandachieveoursharedgoalofanIraqthatcangovernitself,sustainitself,anddefenditself.
There’sstilldifficultworkaheadinIraq.Yetthisweek,theideologyofterrorhassufferedasevereblow.AlQaidahaslostitsleaderinIraq,theIraqipeoplehavecompletedademocraticgovernmentthatisdeterminedtodefendthem,andfreedomhasachievedagreatvictoryintheheart文秘站版权所有ofthe
