第三部分 阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

A Notice

It was a small town which lay on the coast. Most people there lived by catching fish. The hurricanes often struck the area from July to October. Some of the people died in the sea when their boats were blown over by the heavy winds. So they paid much attention to the weather forecasts. They were afraid to meet with the hurricanes when they were catching fish on the sea. Each of the families had a radio and people always took them with themselves and listened to them at any time.

It was September. A hurricane attacked the town one night. Plenty of trees were pushed over and all the electric and telephone lines were broken. People couldn’t watch TV, or call their friends, or go to work. To their anger, they couldn’t listen to the weather forecasts the Town Radio Station broadcast. The food and fresh water would soon be short and the patients couldn’t be given medical care―no medicine could be carried there. People didn’t know what would happen and they looked anxious.

On the fourth day they read a notice on the Town Weekly. It was written, “Recently we have to stop the weather forecast because of the bad weather. We usually get the forecasts from the airport. But the roads are all blocked by the fallen trees and stones. Whether or not we’ll be able to broadcast the weather forecast tomorrow depends on the weather!”

56. The people in the town often took radios with themselves because ____ .

A. they felt lonely when catching fish on the sea and listened to the weather forecasts

B. they cared about the weather forecasts

C. they couldn’t watch TV on the sea

D. they hoped to get some good news

57. The writer wrote the passage mainly to ____ .

A. describe the importance of weather forecast

B. give a news report

C. describe bad effects of natural disasters

D. warn people to be careful against hurricane

58. After reading the notice, the people were ____ .

A. encouraged B. happy

C. excited D. disappointed

English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mails are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary ― perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

When we explore its paradoxes (矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural (复数) of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese ― so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it show the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this passage, I end it.

59. What can you learn from this passage?

A. Sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things.

B. There should be an egg in an eggplant.

C. Pineapples are the apples on the pine tree.

D. Boxing rings should be round.

60. Which of the following is the correct plural?

A. Beeth. B. Geese.

C. Meese. D. Tooth.

61. Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A. A wise man and a wise guy. B. Overlook and oversee.

C. Quite a lot and quite a few. D. Hot as hell and cold as hell.

62. The underlined words “wind up” in the last paragraph probably mean “____”.

A. forget B. start

C. send D. finish

C

Geologists have been studying volcanoes for a long time. Though they have learned a great deal, they still have not discovered the cause of volcanic action. They know that the inside of the earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat was caused by the great pressure of the earth’s outer layers, or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed. During the last sixty years scientists have learned about a lot of radioactive elements (放射性元素). Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive elements.

Whatever the cause of the heat may be, we do know that the earth gets hotter the farther down we dig. In deep mines and oil wells the temperatures rise about 1°F for every 50 feet. At this rate of the temperature, 40 miles below the earth’s surface should be over 4000°. This is much hotter than necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the rock above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic, or puttylike (油灰状的). In other words, the rock changes slowly, but is not liquid. But if some changes in the earth’s crust (地壳) let out the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface.

63. The cause of the great heat inside of the earth is ____ .

A. the great pressure of the earth’s outer layers

B. the heat left from the time when the earth was formed

C. the radioactive elements giving out heat

D. not certain

64. According to the passage, what prevents most rock from melting at its usual melting points?

A. The pressure of the rock itself.

B. The pressure of the rock above.

C. The pressure of the earth’s outer layers.

D. The heat given out by some radioactive elements.

65. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. The farther down, the hotter the earth gets.

B. The rock deep in the earth is liquid.

C. When the pressure is let out from the earth’s crust, the rock melts.

D. Rock would be melted at 4000°.

第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

The other day I heard a few local musicians talking, “I hate all the terrible pianos in this town. I hate that rubbish they play on the radio. They can’t even understand a bit of music.” “I will never play in that club again. Too many drunks and nobody listens to us.” But one younger musician said, “There are a few clubs that book my band a few nights a month, and I’m trying to find other places to play. I’m also looking forward to playing in the summer festival this year.”

I’ve heard that you were the average of the five people whom you spent the most time with, or to put it another way, you are who your friends are.

Attitude is important. Whether they’re positive or negative, they’re rubbing off on you. If you’re around people who complain about lack of work and about other musicians, or blame (责怪) others, and you play the role of victim (受害者). So it’s time to take a look at the people you call “friends”.

This is an easy exercise: Make a list of the people who you hang out with, and simply stop spending time with the negative people on your list. Set a new standard (标准) for yourself and don’t make friends with people who fall below that standard.

Keep successful people around you and your own chances for success will be much better. Ask them how they do it. Ask if they will help you get the work you’re looking for, or maybe give you some advice to help you find a good job.

76. What is the best title for this passage?

77. What does the underlined sentence “they’re rubbing off on you” means?

78. What can you learn from the first paragraph?

79. Why does the writer advise people to take the “easy exercise” mentioned in Paragraph 4?

80. Who do you think this passage is mainly written for ?
