take, spend, pay, cost四词均含“花费”之义，如何“花费”得准确，请注意以下四点：
一、搞清主语是“人”还是“物”；
二、明确花费的内容；
三、掌握花费的习惯搭配或固定句型；
四、注意四者之间的转换。
1. take 作花费（时间或金钱）讲，主语也可以是人。take常用于固定句型 It takes somebody some time to do something中，为了使句子匀称，it作形式主语，真正的主语是句末的动词不定式短语（to do something），意为“做某事花费（某人）多长时间”。如：
It takes me half an hour to read English every morning. (=To read English takes me half an hour every morning.)
每天早晨我朗读半个小时的英语。
2.spend的执行者必须是人，“花费”的可以是时间，也可以是金钱、精力等，与之搭配的短语常常是on something/（in）doing something，即：Somebody spends…on something/(in) doing something，意为“某人（做）某事花费多少金钱或时间”。如：
A. I spent three days (in) finishing reading the novel. (=I spent three days on the novel.)
我花了三天读完这本小说。
B. Lin Tao spent 4，000 yuan on the new computer.(= Lin Tao spent 4，000 yuan buying the new computer.) 林涛买这台电脑花了4000元。
3. “花费”的主语是人用pay，与之搭配的介词常常是for，“花费”的只能是金钱，即：Somebody pays money for something，意为“某人支付某物多少钱”。如：
I only paid 30 yuan for the Chinese-English dictionary.
这本汉英词典我只花了30元。
4.cost 的主语必须是物，“花费”的内容一般是金钱，即：sth. costs (sb.) +money，意为“某物花费某人多少钱/某物值多少钱”。如：
The nice watch cost me 500 dollars.
这块好看的手表花了我500美元。
5.在花费时间上take与spend可相互转换。如：
拍这部影片花费了他们近两年的时间。
A. It took them about two years to finish making the movie.
B. They spent about two years (in) finishing making the movie.
在花费金钱上，spend，pay和cost三者间可互换。如：
那件红裙子花了格林夫人500美元。
A.Mrs. Green spent 500 dollars on the red skirt.
B.Mrs. Green paid 500 dollars for the red skirt.
C. The red skirt cost Mrs. Green 500 dollars.
另外值得一提的是：
be worth …意为“值……”，相当于cost。如：
The coat is worth 1，000 dollars. (= The coat costs 1，000 dollars.)
这件外套值1000美元。
