If gamers want to make this flight simulator[模拟器] move faster, they’re gonna have to push themselves harder. Called “active gaming” or “exergaming,” it’s the latest craze to get people off the couch and onto the bicycle.

Gym Member A: I love it. I jumped on it for five minutes and I was hooked[上瘾]. I was starting…I enjoy that you forget

that you’re working out, and you’re just playing a video game. By the time you get off your machine, you’re

soaking[湿透] wet and you’ve finished your workout.

But it’s the lack of physical workouts that have

contributed to a three-fold increase in childhood obesity[肥胖] over the past three decades.

Gym Member B: Everybody, all…like I…my girlfriends that they play video games all the time, and they play video games over working out, like, they’ll choose video games, you know, so…

Changing that lifestyle is one of the goals behind the Active Gaming Association. They see it as a targeted

approach to a growing problem.

Ryan Dean Hoggan (AGA): In children eight to eighteen, on average that demographic[人口统计学的] spends over 68 minutes per day gaming. That means that the new…the new trends, the new groups coming up through the ranks, they’re very geared towards[适应于] gaming, and that’s

gonna be important in fighting child obesity going forward.

Motivation and engagement are often seen as key to a successful workout, and for fitness trainers like Eric Fleishman, exergaming offers both.

Fleishman: The problem is that people find themselves really bored and really tortured on these machines. So whether I have an old-fashioned treadmill[跑步机] that just goes straight, or I have a treadmill with lots of flashing lights, that time spent on the treadmill still feels like you’re

waiting for cookies to cook. It just takes forever, so

every minute seems like an hour. With this device, it’s very

different because you’re so distracted and it’s so

engaging that the time flies by. I think the exercise will go much smoother for most people.

The Dogfight Fitness Flight Simulator is just one of the workout games being rolled out in gyms across the country. Expect to see more in the coming years.
