A good pcotor

Many years ago there lived a doctor in a small town. He was good and kind and was always ready to go and help others. People often went to him when there was something wrong with them.

Some years later， the doctor himself was often ill and began to forget things. People worried about his health and didn’t go to him any more. One day the doctor asked，“Why does no one come here now？”

No one wanted to tell him why because they didn’t want to hurt the good old man. Instead，they said，“Everybody is healthy now.”The doctor was pleased about it and he himself became better day by day.

Was He a Good Doctor?

One day Mrs Ellen went to see her doctor because there was something wrong with her heart. The doctor looked over Mrs Ellen very quickly. Then he said，“Well，you must stopdrinking and smoking，then you’ll soon be quite all right again.”

“But doctor，”answered Mrs Ellen，“I neither drink nor smoke. I don’t like smoking and I don’t drink any wine.”

“Stop drinking tea and coffee then.”the doctor said to her.

“I only drink water. I don’t like tea or coffee.”Mrs Ellen answered. The doctor thought for a while and then said，“Well...do you like fried potatoes？”

“Yes，I like them very much.”answered Mrs Ellen.

“All right，then stop eating those.”said the doctor when he got up to say goodbye to Mrs Ellen.

Moving Pictures

The old name for films was“moving pictures”. In America people still call them “movies”and they say “Shall we go to the movies？” when we say，“Shall we go to the cinema？”

A boy once said to his friend，“Do you like moving pictures？”His friend thought that he was going to invite him to go to the cinema， so he said，“Yes， please. I like moving pictures very much.”

“Good，”said the boy.“My father has a picture shop. He sells pictures. This evening I must move pictures from one room to another. You like moving pictures， so I think you will enjoy moving pictures for me.”

It's No Use For You

For months the artist had to be in hospital. It tired（使厌烦）him very much. He wanted to go out for a walk， but the doctor did not let him do so. When he got a little better， the nurses helped him go out of bed and walk in the ward（病房）.

One day there was nobody in the ward except him， he went out. It was warm that day. The artist was happy to see a lot of flowers in the garden. When he was tired（累）， he sat on a chair and saw an old woman not far from him. She was reading a newspaper. He came up and asked，“Can you tell me what the date is today， Granny？”

“I’m sorry I don’t know.” answered the old woman.

“What day is it today，then？”

“I don’t know，either.”

“May I read your newspaper？”

“It’s no use for you，” said the old woman.“It’s yesterday’s paper.”

A Pollce Dog

My friend has a big police dog called Jack. Police dogs are often clever. Every Sunday afternoon my friend takes Jack for a long walk in the park. Jack likes these long walks in the park very much.

One Sunday afternoon a young man came to visit my friend. He stayed for a long time. He talked and talked. Soon it was time for my friend to take Jack for his walk. But the visitor still stayed. Jack got worried about his walk in the park. He walked around the room several times and then sat down in front of the visitor and looked at him. But the visitor paid no attention. He went on talking. Finally Jack couldn’t stand（忍受）it. He went out of the room and came back a few minutes later. He sat down again in front of the visitor，but this time he held the visitor’s hat in his mouth.
