How many times have you seen somebody and recognized him or her but completely forgot his or her name? This is something that never happens to Hollywood's A-list actors. Everywhere they go they are known. Their faces are the most familiar in the world. But what about the actors who are not household names? This issue of Insight Entertainment is dedicated to four of America's finest actors. Not Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt; no, these are the whatshisnames of the silver screen. The ones that everybody knows by face but not by name. The actors who are so good that they are remembered more for the characters they portray than for celebrity status. The four actors below all have two things in common; they are all men (a similar article about actresses will follow in the future), and they have been in lead roles but are more famous for their supporting and cameo roles.

William H. Macy威廉・H・梅西

Macy originally wanted to become a vet but changed his mind when he started to study acting under the legendary playwright-director David Mamet. Macy has a reputation for playing losers. In his melancholy face, in the way he stutters a line, Macy humanizes despairing, imperfect people. He does not believe in method acting and has said that everything he needs to know about a character is in the script. He started doing theatre in the seventies and began appearing in films in the early eighties. In 1996, his portrayal of a car dealer who concocts a highly-flawed plan to have his wife kidnapped in order to get money from his father-in-law, in Fargo, won him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. It also brought him into the limelight, and since then he has been appearing more frequently on the big screen. The following year he appeared in Boogie Nights and gave his most memorable performance ever as a suicidal pornographic filmmaker. The latest film he appeared in was Sahara, and in 2006 you can see him in Conquistadora.

If there is any truth in the statement that there is a limited amount of space for Black actors on Hollywood's A-list, Don Cheadle is the proof. This actor should have been a star a long time ago, and although his face is familiar to millions, he has never had the kind of attention he deserves. Cheadle is an extremely versatile actor and can play villains and heroes with the same degree of realism. As with Macy, Cheadle played a memorable role in Boogie Nights, which brought him to the attention of a wider audience. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in the 2004 film, Hotel Rwanda. He is regularly called a scene-stealer by the critics, although he personally dislikes this description. Nonetheless, one has to admit that even when he has a small role in a film it is hard to keep your eyes off him, and that's no small feat considering the big names he has acted alongside. His style complements, rather than overshadows his co-star's performances. He stands out for his rare ability to bring a laid-back intensity and subtle charisma to the roles he plays. His most recent performance was in Ocean's Twelve and the next time you will see him will be in Tishomingo Blues which he also directed.

Philip Seymour Hoffman菲利普・西摩尔・霍夫曼

One of the most original, versatile, studied and steadily employed actors in Hollywood, Philip Seymour Hoffman has made a name for himself playing some of the most dysfunctional characters in movie history. His performance in Boogie Nights (notice a pattern here?) stands out in a film bursting with great performances. He took on the role of an awkward lovesick soundman, imbuing the character with both humor and poignant complexity. He had been treading the boards for years before his film debut in Scent of a Woman in 1992. Despite the fact that he is still a huge name on Broadway, Hoffman has appeared in over thirty films and has a reputation for being intensely hard-working. He himself says that preparing a role is the mental equivalent of dragging heavy luggage up a flight of stairs. Watch out for him in Mission Impossible III.

Morgan Freeman 摩根・弗里曼

You may have noticed that this year Morgan Freeman won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his world class performance as ex-prize fighter Eddie 'Scrap Iron' Dupris in Million Dollar Baby. What you may or may not remember is that this was the fourth time that he was nominated for this award. The authoritatively spoken (he has narrated numerous documentaries), serenely self-confident and ever popular African-American actor is one of the most respected figures in modern US cinema. His big breakthrough came in 1988 with his part in Driving Miss Daisy. The big time followed and Freeman appeared in several blockbusters, such as The Shawshank Redemption, Unforgiven and Se7en. Freeman didn't start acting until he was thirty (previous to that he worked as a mechanic for the US Air Force) and he paid his dues for twenty years on stage and television before coming to the public's attention as a suave but vicious pimp in the 1987 film, Street Smart. He has since become one of Hollywood's most visible and successful supporting actors, and has also gained a solid reputation as a character lead in thrillers and contemporary dramas. Oh yeah, and he didn't star in Boogie Nights.
