4月1日，青岛市东部新辟交通干线山东路破土动工，1983年9月30日竣工，成为青岛市有史以来规模最大、标准最高、质量最好、建筑速度最快的道路工程。该路南起东海路、北与瑞昌路相接，全长5118米，宽40米，车行道宽28.4米，沥青路面。这也是青岛最早的一条分快慢车道、道路两侧有花坛隔离带的现代化道路。40米宽的路面，不仅成为青岛马路“第一宽”，也是当时整个山东省城区道路中的“第一宽”。

On February 8-18, the CPC Qingdao Municipal Committee held a working conference on deeply studying and implementing the essence of the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh CPC Central Committee'the documents of the Working Conference of the CPC Central Committee and the Working Conference of the CPC Shandong Provincial Committee, and arranging the various measures concerning the shift of working emphasis points.

During discussions between May 9 and June 7, Liao Chengzhi, Head of the "China-Japan Friendly Ship" Delegation announced in Shimonoseki City, Japan that Qingdao would establish friendly city relationship with Shimonoseki City. On October 3, the agreement on the friendly relationship between Qingdao City and Shimonoseki City was signed in Shimonoseki. This was the first friendly city Shandong Province had established with the foreign countries.

On July 26-31, Deng Xiaoping, Vice Chairman of the CPC Central Committee, inspected work in Qingdao. At the meeting of secretaries of the CPC provincial and municipal committees held in Qingdao on 28th, Deng Xiaoping delivered a speech with the title of The Fulfillment of Ideological Line and Political Line Should Be Guaranteed by the Organization Line.

In 1980, in areas such as Jiaozhou, Jimo and Pingdu, on the foundation of implementing

contracting out work quotas to groups and paying remuneration according to the quotas, the agricultural production responsibility system of contracting work quotas to families and linking payment with production was implemented and gradually popularized.

From May 13 to July 25, "Pearl"-China's first bulk cargo ship of Qingdao Ocean Shipping Co., Ltd., set off on its maiden voyage to Galveston Harbor in the United States.

In May, the Prefecture Revolutionary Committee was abolished in Qingdao and the Prefecture People's Government was established. On July 21, the Second Session of the Eighth People's Congress of Qingdao City was held, at which it was decided that the Municipal Revolutionary Committee be abolished and the Municipal People's Government was established. Li Bingzheng was elected as mayor.

1981

On March 31, The People's Daily published an editorial entitled Bringing the Performance of Central Cities into Full Play, which pointed out that Qingdao was one of China's coastal central cities for international trade, i.e. one of the 15 economic central cities.

On June 18-23, the Fifth Session of the Eighth People's Congress of Qingdao City was held, at which the Overall Planning of the City of Qingdao was examined and passed. On January 5, 1984, the State Council of China approved this plan. Following that, through breaking the mode of laying stress on the development of traditional industries in the four downtown districts, Qingdao gradually formed a city pattern featuring a reasonable layout structure, moderate scale, convenient transport, rapid communication, abundant energy, comfortable living and a developed economy.

On August 15-22, China's first Sailboard Competition was held at Huiquan Bay in Qingdao.

On October 2, Longshan Hotel-the first underground hotel combining civilian and military facilities-came into use in Qingdao. Afterwards, Longshan Hotel became a fashionable shopping resort for Qingdao citizens and is still in use today.

1982

On April 1, ground was broken for the construction of Shandong Road-a new artery in east downtown Qingdao. On September 30, 1983, the construction was completed. Shandong Road, therefore, became the road engineering project with the largest scale, highest standards, best quality and highest construction speed in the history of Qingdao.

On July 27, 1982, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) officially replied and approved that the Qingdao Station of Civil Aviation could temporarily use the Liuting Airport of the Chinese Navy for civilian aviation transport.

On September 23-29, the ceremony for the complete construction of Shandong Foreign Trade Center and the First Shandong Exported Commodities Fair was held in Qingdao. In subsequent years, this fair became an exported commodities fair as famous as the China Import and Export Fair held in Guangzhou.

In 1982, Qingdao started the trial reform concerning the labor contract system in the urban areas. In December the same year, Huanghai Hotel, the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Boiler Repair Shop, People's Armed Forces Department, and the market management department of the Industrial and Commercial Administration Bureau recruited 397 contract labor workers. The "big pot" system was broken among the urban workers.

On July 17, Qingdao successfully developed China's first fully automatic single-yarn strength tester. On September 14, double contrast barium sulfate was successfully developed in Qingdao. These scientific research achievements greatly promoted the development of Qingdao's industrial enterprises.

On December 10, the renovation of Xiaobai Arterial Road was completed and it was opened to traffic. The south-north road was an artery for the entrance and exit of Qingdao. For a long time, it was the only highway leading to Qingdao. In the 21st century, Xiaobai Arterial Road was divided into Chongqing South Road, Chongqing Middle Road and Chongqing North Road.

On June 11, the contract signing ceremony was held for Qingdao TV factory to introduce the TV production line from Panasonic. On October 23, Qingdao Refrigerator Factory and Germany-based Liebherr Corporation signed an agreement on refrigerator technology and economic cooperation.

On July 20, construction of the overpass at Hangzhou Road was started, thus initiating the construction of overpasses in downtown Qingdao.

On September 1, ground was broken for the construction of Qingdao Liuting Airport for civilian use.

On October 20, the State Council of China approved the establishment of Qingdao Economic and Technological Development Zone.

1985

On July 12, Qingdao University was established.

On November 6, 1985, the State Council of China approved the project of "Diverting Water from the Yellow River to Qingdao". On April 15, 1986, the ground was broken at the rive course renovation site of Taoyuan River in Jiao County (present-day Jiaonan City) for the project of "Diverting Water from the Yellow River to Qingdao". On November 16, the trial of the diversion project was successful.

On August 31, the phone numbers in Qingdao were upgraded from five-digit to six-digit. On August 20, 1995, Qingdao*s local telephone network was constructed and the phone numbers were upgraded from six-digit to seven-digit.

On September 6, Qingdao Post and Telecommunication Bureau started to provide the wireless paging service.

On October 15, the State Council of China approved that Qingdao could be listed separately in national planning.

On April 1, Jiaozhou City was established, which was the first county-level city under the direct jurisdiction of Qingdao City.

On July 15, the taxis in Qingdao started to use taxi meters.

On October 1, construction of the Qianwan Area of Qingdao Harbor was started.

1988

On June 4, Qingdao Securities Company was established.

On October 28, Haitian Hotel-the first four-star hotel in Qingdao-opened for business.

1989

On March 26, Qingdao Municipal Government held a working conference on product quality, at which it was proposed that throughout the city an activity with the theme of creating "Qingdao Golden Flower" would be launched among the industrial products for civilian use.

1990

On November 21, China's first offshore communication optical fibre cable was successfully embedded in the offshore area nearby Qingdao and was put into use.

On December 28, the double tracking railways of JiaoJi Railway were fully open to traffic.

On December 18, the State Council of China approved that Laixi County and Jiaonan County be established as county-level cities and were under the jurisdiction of Qingdao City. Since then, all of the counties under Qingdao City were established as cities. Qingdao, therefore, became the first city agglomeration comprised of two levels of cities nationwide.

On June 23-30, the first Qingdao International Beer Festival was held. Forty-one breweries and more than 100 kinds of beer in China participated in the beer exhibitions.

On September 19, the first batch of China's 10 Famous Trademarks were born. Tsingtao Beer and Qingdao-Liebherr refrigerator ranked among the forefront of the list.

On April 16, the leading group responsible for the development and construction of east Qingdao was established. The development and construction of east Qingdao was jump started.

On August 1, Qingdao High-tech Industry Park open for service.

On November 19, the State Council of China approved the establishment of Qingdao Tariff-free Zone.

1993

On May 1, broadcasting began on Qingdao Cable TV Station.

On June 29, Tsingtao Beer Co., Ltd. went public in Hong Kong, becoming the first state-owned enterprises from the mainland of China to go public in Hong Kong.

In August, the Notice on Implementing a Comprehensive Contract System for All employees to Deepen the Reform of Three Systems issued by Qingdao Municipal Government regulated that the comprehensive contract system should be popularized among all of the enterprises throughout city to deepen the reform of three systems.

1994

On January 20, the State Council of China gave approval for Qingdao City to be a national famous city of history and culture. On February 25, Qingdao was listed as a sub-provincial level city.

On June 27, Qingdao Security Exchange Center opened for business.

On September 12, the Korean Consulate in Qingdao-the first foreign consulate in Qingdao, opened for service.

1995

On July 18, the maiden flight between Qingdao and Osaka was launched by Shandong Branch of China Eastern, which was the first international flight starting from Shandong.

On December 28, Jinan-Qingdao Expressway opened to traffic.

1996

On June 8, for the first time, Qingdao recruited civil servants by examinations.

1997

On February 4, officially approved by six state ministries and commissions, Haier Group and Tsingtao Beer Co., Ltd. were upgraded as national extra-large enterprises. Haier Group was the only collective-owned extra-large enterprise throughout the country. Tsingtao Beer Co., Ltd. was listed among the 10 beer group corporations enjoying key support from the state government.

On February 12, the State Bureau of Technical Supervision publicized that Tsingtao Beer was the only brand enjoying national level protection in China's beer trade.

On December 22, the container handling capacity of Qingdao Harbor exceeded one million containers, making Qingdao Harbor the second largest container transport harbor of China's coastal regions.

1998

On October 1, the Eastern "Book City" of Qingdao Xinhua Bookstore-the largest bookstore in Shandong Province-opened for business.

On December 13, at the 13th Asian Games held in Bangkok, Yu Guohui from Qingdao won the men's 20-km walk and broke the Asian Games record.

1999

On January 1-9, Hu Jintao, Standing Member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee inspected Qingdao.

On June 25-26, Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of China and Chairman of the Military Commission of the CPC Central Committee presided over the talk on reform and development of the state-owned enterprises of seven provinces and municipalities of east China.

On December 29, within three years, Qingdao Municipal Government had fulfilled the "century promise" of completely renovating the shanty blocks. One year ahead of schedule, 23,000 households bade farewell to the shanty blocks.

2000

On February 23, Qingdao was listed as a "National Experimental City for E-commerce." Since then, e-commerce has rapidly developed in Qingdao.

On December 10, China's first wireless remote-control locomotive passed examination and acceptance at Sifang Locomotive Factory, which filled in the domestic blank in this field.

2001

On March 12, Haier Group successfully developed the first human-computer conversation computer. On July 17, the National Center for Ocean Research was established in Qingdao. On December 11, the handling capacity of Qingdao Harbor hit 100.08 million tons, making it rank among the large harbors worldwide with handling capacity exceeding 100 million tons.

On July 13, Beijing succeeded in bidding for hosting the Olympic Games. Qingdao became the host city for the sailing competitions of the Beijing Olympic Games.

2002

On November 30, the first phase of the east-west rapid transmission road opened to traffic.

2003

On February 28, Qingdao was granted the "Chinese Residential Environment Prize" for 2002 by the State Ministry of Construction.

On July 21, Qingdao Harbor signed an agreement with three world shipping giants on jointly building Qianwan Port into the largest container port in China.

2004

On May 15, the release ceremony for the emblem "Sailing City Qingdao" was held at the China Century Altar in Beijing.

On May 25, the foundation laying ceremony was held for the construction of Qingdao International Sailing Center for the 29th Olympic Games.

June 20, the foundation laying ceremony was held for construction of the new Korean Consulate in Qingdao.

2005

On June 26, "Xin Chip"-the first video chip developed by HiSense group with independent intellectual property rights, which could be industrialized-passed the authoritative appraisal of the State Information Industry Ministry.

On September 27, Qingdao became the first city nationwide to have a digital television transmission system. In the same year, 670,000 households throughout the city could all watch digital television programs.

On November 6, Qingdao was granted the title of "Chinese City of Brands".

2006

On January 10, Qingdao ranked first among "China's Most Enchanting Cities in 2005".

On October 19, Qingdao was chosen as the first "Model City Agglomeration for Environmental Protection" among the sub-provincial cities in China.

On December 27, the submarine channel engineering project across the Jiaozhou Gulf was started.

In December, construction of Qingdao Gulf Bridge was started.

2007

On February 26, Qingdao's charity organization "Weichen" was chosen as the figure that

emotionalized China in 2006.

On November 16, the Second Session of the Tenth Congress of the CPC Qingdao Municipal Committee put forward the city development strategy of "launching protection around the gulf, and developing along the gulf ". The construction of a modern city complex was started.

On December 13, Qingdao Harbor ranked among the top 10 container harbors worldwide. Regarding the cargo handling capacity, Qingdao Harbor ranked seventh worldwide.

On December 22, China's first domestic-made "Harmony" multiple units capable of a speed of 300 kilometers per hour rolled off the production line in Qingdao.

2008

On August 1, the new Railway Station in Qingdao opened for service. The JiaoJi Railway with more than 100 years of history entered the "bullet train" era.

On August 8-21, 11 medal competition programs of nine classes of the sailing competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were held in Qingdao.

On August 14, Zhang Juanjuan from Qingdao won the first archery gold medal for China at the Olympic Games.

On September 8, the Paralympic Regatta kicked off in Qingdao. On the 9th, at the Paralympic Games, blind girl Wu Chunmiao from Qingdao won the gold medal in the 100 meters T11 race and broke the Paralympic record.
