Russia， Whither Goest Thou： Decline， Transformation and Rebirth

Abstract： After more than 10 years of political turmoil， Russian society began to reflect on issues regarding nation， democracy and freedom. Since 2000， the world outlook of Putin and his pragmatic governing concept has had a direct bearing on Russia's development direction. The Russians believe that Putin is the symbol of stability， development and order. However， suffering heavy losses in the 2008 international financial crisis， the Russian domestic and foreign policy was once again faced with a major adjustment. A difficult choice to be made by the political elites of Russia is whether to take an independent， self-reliant nationalism development path or a path that aims to replicate the European success.
