What can help you make a fortune in the future? Graduating from a top university might not be enough. A new study from the University of Essex in Britain has shown that the more friends you have in school, the more money youll earn later.

The idea that popularity could have a serious influence on ones earning potential shouldnt come as too much of a surprise. The researchers noted that if you want to get ahead in life, social skills and networking are easily as powerful as talent and hard work.

“If a person has lots of friends, it means that he or she has the ability to get along with others in all kinds of different situations,” said Xu Yanchun, 17, from Nantou High School in Shenzhen, who totally agreed with the recent finding. “Also, friends always help each other. They not only create wider social circles for you but lift your mood when you are occasionally in low spirits,” said Xu. She believed that all this helps you “earn a higher salary.”

Maybe thats why some people think the younger generations are in the age of Friendalholism (交友狂症)? A woman even complained that the networking website Facebooks 5,000friend limit was too low for her large reserve of social contacts.

But what does a friend mean? Should friends be regarded as a form of currency?

“Call me uncool (土里土气的), but I think of a friend as an actual person with whom I have an actual history and whom I enjoy actually seeing. It seems, however, that this is no longer the definition of friend”, said Meghan Daum, who works with The Los Angeles Times in the US.

Daum dislikes the idea that quantity is better than quality in the age of friendaholism. She thought the idea of friendship, at least among the growing population of Internet social networkers, was to get as many of notreallyfriends as possible. For example, a friend might be someone you might know personally but who could just as easily be the friend of a friend of some other Facebook friend you dont actually know. Although she agreed that social ties grease()the wheels of life, she also warned. “Too bad one thing money cant buy is a real friend.”

56. What can friends do in the eyes of Xu Yanchun?

A. They can help you with your schoolwork.

B. They teach you how to make more money.

C. They help you to get rid of sadness and cheer you up.

D. They introduce their friends to you.

57. What will be needed if you are to achieve success according to the researchers?

A. Social skills, friends, good mood and fortune.

B. Social skills, networking, talent and hard work.

C. Social skills, networking, potential and fortune.

D. Social skills, talent, hard work and the facebook.

58. We learn that Meghan Daums attitude towards friends is somewhat .

A. uptodateB. optimisticC. confusedD. traditional

People are being lured (引诱) onto Facebook with the promise of a fun, free service without realizing theyre paying for it by giving up loads of personal information. Facebook then attempts to make money by selling their data to advertisers that want to send targeted messages.

Most Facebook users dont realize this is happening. Even if they know what the company is up to, they still have no idea what theyre paying for Facebook because people dont really know what their personal data is worth.

The biggest problem, however, is that the company keeps changing the rules. Early on, you could keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook―you could create your own little private network. Last year. The company changed its privacy rules so that many things―your city, your photo, your friends names―were set, by default (默认), to be shared with every one on the Internet.

According to Facebooks vicepresident Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people dont share information, they have a “less satisfying experience”.

Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the pages, totally flopped(惨败). Who wants to look at ads when theyre online connecting with their friends?

The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April, Senator Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Federal Trade Commission to set guidelines for socialnetworking sites. “I think the senator rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.

I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy, its only the beginning, which is why Im considering deactivating (撤销) my account. Facebook is a handy site, but Im upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I dont trust. Thats too high a price to pay.

59. About Facebook, the first paragraph tells us that .

A. it is a website that sends messages to targeted users

B. it makes money by putting on advertisements

C. it profits by selling its users personal data

D. it provides loads of information to its users

60. What does the author say about most Facebook users?

A. They are unwilling to give up their personal information.

B. They dont know their personal data enriches Facebook.

C. They dont identify themselves when using the website.

D. They care very little about their personal information.

61. What does Senator Charles Schumer advocate?

A. Setting guidelines for advertising on websites.

B. Banning the sharing of users personal information.

C. Formulating regulations for socialnetworking sites.

D. Removing ads from all socialnetworking sites.

62. Why does the author plan to cancel his Facebook account?

A. He is dissatisfied with its current service.

B. He finds many of its users untrustworthy.

C. He is upset by its frequent rule changes.

D. He doesnt want his personal data abused.

Its an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says “No” because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and whats the point if you cant go on holiday. The joy of a recession(经济不景气) means no argument next year―we just wont go.

Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2, 000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. Whats less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession―financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterized by intense verbal(言语上的) aggression(侵犯), tended to be repeated and not resolved and made men, more than women, extremely angry.

Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what its for.” he explains. “Theyll say its to save to spend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that theyve achieved something.

“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other know whats going on with their finances, but they dont. There seems to be more of a taboo about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what youre doing, whos paying what into the joint account(共同账户) and how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you dont have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”

67. What does the author say about vacationing?

A. People enjoy it all the more during a recession.

B. Few people can afford it without working hard.

C. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.

D. It is the chief cause of family disputes.

68. What does the author mean by saying “money is known… to bring a relationship to its knees” (Line 1, Para.2)?

A. Money is considered to be the root of all evils.

B. Some people sacrifice their dignity for money.

C. Few people can resist the temptation of money.

D. Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.

69. What does Kim Stephenson believe?

A. Money is often a symbol of a persons status.

B. Money means a great deal to both and women.

C. Men and women spend money on different things.

D. Men and women view money in different ways.

70. The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should .

A. put their money together instead of keeping it separately

B. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets

C. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship

D. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic

Students typically speak of their experiences abroad as “lifechanging” and count their international experience as one of the most rewarding features of their college careers. They not only advance themselves academically, but also acquire a mature view of our complex world. The benefits of studying abroad are many. Here are a few:

Special academic opportunities. For all students, but especially for those with an interest in area studies, attending a university abroad opens up a lot of academic options:courses not offered at Princeton, access to research materials, and contact with foreign scholars and researchers in particular fields of interest. Foreign environments can also provide a kind of living laboratory for original research that can only be conducted onsite.

Foreign language competency. The best way to become fluent in a foreign language is to go to a country where the language is spoken. The ability to read and talk in a foreign language benefits the scholarly work of all students and is a skill that is increasingly valued in all professions.

Preparation for careers with an international dimension. Todays workplace is increasingly global and requires knowledge and experience that transcends (超出) national boundaries. Students who have studied abroad can prove to possible employers that they can handle themselves in new situations and have experience interacting with people from other backgrounds. Students may also develop professional relationships that continue long after the study abroad experience is over.

Crosscultural competence and understanding. Spending time abroad allows you to test your abilities to cope with the challenges of living in another culture as a participant rather than a tourist. Living in another culture exposes you to different views about world events and your own country―deepening your understanding of your own culture, yourself, and the world.

Improve decisionmaking and problemsolving skills. Students studying abroad find themselves in new situations all the time. When students convey their needs and thoughts using new language skills, they gain confidence. These skills are helpful in other aspects of life, both personal and professional.

Test your interests. While studying abroad, especially on a fieldbased program, students can often take their interests on a more specific, applied direction. For example, they can try field research and interact with professionals working in fields of interest to them.

Make new contacts. Students form a large network of people while studying abroad. Some students may call upon their incountry professional contacts soon after the programs conclusion; others stay in touch with homestay families for decades; still others form lifelong friendships with their peers(同龄人). These relationships can be deeply expanding.
