【Abstract】 Contrary to the foreword of Jonathan Swift said, I will spread the negative sides of my hometown dialect in this essay and try to help modify them.

【Key words】transfer, dialect, pronunciation

My hometown Huainan locates on Anhui ,people’s republic of China. In the past, people are used to classify Anhui dialect into Sino-Tibetan language and dialect of northern area. And this also reflects the status of the early background in Anhui. However, with the immigration of northern residents and nearby residents, the forth tone in Chinese pronunciation which marks that Huainan dialect belonging to jiang-huai mandarin is disappearing little by little. Nowadays, Huainan dialect is represented bu Tianjin dialect is more and more like Bengbo dialect and it should belong to central area mandarin.

Then let’s focus on what positive aspects Huainan dialect brought to English pronunciation. In Huainan dialect, we are used to pronounce words with heavy accent and long duration. It’s okay in speaking Chinese. However, It will arise a lot of problems when we put this habit to English pronunciation. For example, as we all know, [p] [t] [k] are three consonants in English and they should be pronounced shortly and clearly, of course without vocal cord vibration. However, because of the entering tone, one of the four tones in Chinese pronunciation still retained in Huainan dialect. So the three consonants are usually pronounced to be [P3] 、【ta] 、[ka】by English learners in Huainan. That is to say, they like adding some vowels after the consonants and pronouncing them together.Just like/d/is pronounced as/da/,so the word‘‘read”will be/ri:da/’/t/will be/ta/。/k / is pronounced/ka|。/g/as/go|。/f/as/fu:/.Another difficult point for Huainan English speaker is that they feel hard to grasp the correct pronunciation of /0//6/.They are not alone at this point for students all over the China are confused bu these consonants for the absence of these in Chinese pronunciation. So they are liable to replace these consonants with /s/ /z/. Which is complexing when Huainan English learners communicate with foreigners with these mistakes. In addition, Huainan English learners usually can’t distinguish /w/ from/v/. In English, these two semivowels are totally different for /w/ belongs to Consonant phonemes while in Chinese,/w/ is the variant of /u/, so many Huainan English learners are used to transferring these wrong concepts into English speaking. That’s quiet confusing in communication, too. I even don’t realize my mistakes till my university English teacher corrects them when I was a freshman. However, I found one good point of Huainan dialect in English learning. For I discovered that many southern students especially students from Sichuan province can’t make a distinction between the front nasal /n/, lateral /l/. While we Huainan people can easily distinguish them in any condition.

Since we have known the negative influences Huainan dialect brought to English speaking, how can we try our best to avoid them during our teaching and learning process? We are all English teachers in the next few years after graduation, so we need to develope our awareness now. As far as I am concerned, the method of contrasting and summarizing are very necessary in our English teaching process because we can find out the pronunciation similarities and differences between Huainan dialect and English. English teachers should sum up the pronunciation rules , then give students the basic knowledge of standard English pronunciation timely. Such as “open syllables” and basic intonation in English sentences. Don’t forget to let students do a lot of practice based on the understanding of it.
