IntheChicagoarea,busineeshaveaddedmorethan74,000newjooverthepasttwoyears.AndinIllinois,theunemploymentratehasfallento4.6percent,thelowestratethereinover5-and-a-halfyears.
Wehavegoodnewsaboutournationaleconomy,aswell.OnFriday,welearnedthattheAmericaneconomycreated121,000newjoinJune,andithascreatedover5.4millionjosinceAugust20__.Wenowhaveaddedjofor34straightmonths,andtheunemploymentrateis4.6percent.
Inthefirstquarterof20__,oureconomygrewatanimpreiveaualrateof5.6percent.Thisfollowsoureconomicgrowthof3.5percentin20__,thefastestrateofanymajorindustrializednation.Andbecausetaxesarelow,ourworkersarekeepingmoreofthemoneytheyearn.
Behindeachofthesepositivestatisticsarecountlestories--storiesofworkerswhostarteachdaywithhopebecausetheyhaveajobthatwillhelpthembuildabetterlife;storiesoffamilieswithmoremoneyinthebankforcollegetuition,oradownpaymentonahome;storiesofsmallbusineownerswhoknowtheycanhiremoreworkersandgrowwithconfidence.
OureconomicexpaionisliftingthelivesofmillioofAmerica,andtokeepthisexpaiongoing,wemustmaintainthepro-growth,low-taxpoliciesthathelpedtolaunchitinthefirstplace.ThetaxreliefwedeliveredhashelpedunleashtheentrepreneurialiritofAmericaandkeptoureconomytheenvyoftheworld.SoIwillcontinuetoworkwithCongretomakethattaxreliefpermanent.
OureconomyisalsothrivingbecauseAmericaremaitheworld’smostiovativenation.DuringmytriptoIllinois,IvisitedacompanycalledCabotMicroelectronics,whichmakesproductsformanufacturingsemiconductorchiandotherhigh-techcomponents.Cutting-edgefirmslikeCabotarecreatinggoodjoforourworkersandhelpingtokeepAmericacompetitiveintheglobaleconomy.
TohelpcompanieslikeCabotmaintainournation’scompetitiveedge,IproposedmyAmericanCompetitiveneInitiative.Thisinitiativewilldoublefederalfundingforresearchinpromisingareassuchasnanotechnology,supercomputing,andalternativeenergysources.Theinitiativewillalsoencouragebolderprivatesectorinvestmentintechnology,andhelpeurethateveryAmericanchildhasthemathandscienceskillsneededforthejooftomorrow.
Lastmonth,theHouseofRepresentativesarovedfullfundingforthebasicresearchcomponentofthisinitiative.IurgetheSenatetofollowtheHouse’slead,soAmericacanremainaniovativenationthatcompeteswithconfidence.
