1月1日，山东省最后一个贫困县沾化县宣告脱贫。

1月8日，济南高新技术产业开发区与山东省科学院联合创办的中国第一家科研机构――科技创业园正式成立。

January 8, the Scientific and Technological Pioneering Park jointly established by Jinan Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone and Shandong Academy of Sciences was established.

1月9日，济南、青岛、泰安、烟台、威海、曲阜获首批“中国优秀旅游城市”。山东省居各省、市、自治区榜首。

January 9, Jinan, Qingdao, Tai’an, Yantai, Weihai and Qufu ranked among China’s first group of “Excellent Tourist Cities.” In terms of number, Shandong ranked top among all the provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the whole country.

2月13日，中国沿海第一个海域交通管理系统――成山头交管系统正式投入运行。

February 13, Chengshantou Traffic System―the first maritime transport management system in China―was put into operation.

3月26日，中国至澳大利亚首条集装箱班轮航线首航式在青岛港举行。这是中国海运业第一条直达澳洲的航线。

March 26, the maiden voyage of the first container liner ship between China and Australia began in Qingdao. This was the first shipping line directly leading from China to Australia.

7月6日，济南黄河第二公路大桥、潍坊至莱阳高速公路竣工通车。至此，山东高速公路通车里程已达1085公里，成为中国第一个高速公路超千公里的省份。10月31日济南至泰安高速公路正式通车。至此，山东省高速公路通车里程达1359公里，居全国首位。

July 6, the No. 2 Highway Bridge over the Yellow River in Jinan and the Weifang-Laiyang Expressway were open to traffic. Expressway mileage open to traffic in Shandong Province had now hit 1,085 kilometers. On October 31, the expressway between Jinan and Tai’an was open to traffic. The expressway mileage open to traffic in Shandong Province then hit 1,359 kilometers, ranking top nationwide.

9月25日，泉城广场等省城三大工程竣工。1997年6月15日召开的中共山东省委常委扩大会议，根据济南长远发展的需要和城市建设中存在的薄弱环节，提出“用5年左右的时间，使济南的城市面貌有明显改观，综合经济实力和服务功能明显增强”的要求，确定了济南机场扩建、绕城高速公路一期、泉城广场、济南污水处理厂管网配套、两个水泥厂迁建、市区灯亮工程六大重点工程。此日竣工的泉城广场、济南机场扩建以及趵突泉扩建工程既是对建国50年的献礼，也是这“六大工程”的重要组成部分，特别是前两项工程的竣工，使省委确定的“六大工程”全部完成，从而揭开了省城建设史上的新篇章。

2月19日，青岛港务局与英国铁行集团属下澳大利亚港口公司正式签订青岛港前湾二期集装箱码头合资合同，该项目总投资1.7676亿美元，其中外资占49％的股份。这是全省目前基础设施领域外商直接投资规模最大的项目。

February 19, Qingdao Port Authority and Hutchison Port Holdings of P&O signed a joint-venture contract with total investment volume of 176,760 million US dollars on the construction of the second phase of the container port at Qingdao Qianwan Harbor. P&O accounted for 49 percent of the shares.

2月23日，山东省第一座(国内第四座)抽水蓄能电站――泰山抽水蓄能电站开工建设，工程动态投资43.26亿元。

February 23, construction of Tai'an Pumped Storage Station―the first pumped storage station in Shandong Province (the fourth in China) was started. The dynamic engineering investment was 4.326 billion yuan.

3月13日，由垦利县海洋与水产局承担的“滨海盐碱地渗水对虾精养高产技术研究”课题通过鉴定。该项目在国内尚属首创，其技术达到国内领先水平。

9月18日，在悉尼奥运会体操男子团体决赛中，由山东小将邢傲伟和另外5名选手组成的中国男子体操队，夺得男子体操团体冠军，实现了山东奥运金牌零的突破。19日，山东运动员林伟宁获得悉尼奥运会女子举重69公斤级冠军。

September 18, at the men’s gymnastics team final at the Sydney Olympic Games, the Chinese team of Xing Aowei and other five gymnasts were champions in men’s team competition, which was the first gold medal Shandong won at the Olympic Games. On September 19, Shandong athlete Lin Weining won gold in the women’s 69 kilogram weightlifting competition.

12月12日烟台开发区通过了国家环保总局、省环保局、中国环科院环境管理体系认证中心等部门的鉴定，成为全国第五家、全省第一家ISO14001部级生态示范区。

December 12, Yantai Development Zone became the first (fifth nationwide) national level ecological demonstration zone accredited by the ISO14001 Environmental Management System.
