求生的本能

电影《后天》讲述了美国气候学家Jack Hall在观察史前气候研究后发现，地球在一天之内突然急剧降温，进入冰川期。他说服政府官员及时采取行动，将尽可能多的国民转移到天气较为温暖的南方。而此时Jack为了遵守对儿子Sam的承诺，与科考的队友一路历经重重困难，徒步行至纽约。

本选段讲的是Sam与他的同学到纽约参加知识竞赛，回程遭遇天气骤变，无奈下与其他路人一同避在公共图书馆。他们看到不少人在往南方迁移以躲避寒冷气候，图书馆内的人们在一名警察的煽动下决定也尽快转移。Sam与父亲通话后得知天气将会越来越糟，他将实情告诉众人，却无法说服他们留下。

Luther (A tramp): Hey, man, there’s people out there. I was walking my dog. There’s hundreds of them. They’re walking on the snow.

(Some of the people are looking out of the window to see what is happening.)

Man 1: Where they all going?

Man 2: They’re getting out of the city before it’s too late.

Policeman: Alright, everybody. Quiet down. When was the last time anyone got a signal on a cell phone?

Girl: Well I got through to my cousin in Memphis an hour ago. They’re being 1)evacuated to the South.

Policeman: We should get moving too. The water is frozen over enough to walk on. We should get going before the snow gets too deep. ①Everyone, wrap yourselves up as fast as you can.

卢瑟（流浪汉）：嘿，伙计，外面有不少人，我在遛狗的时候看到的，有好几百人，他们在雪地上走。

（一些人望向窗外，看看发生了什么事。）

男人一：他们要去哪？

男人二：趁为时未晚离开这座城市。

警察：好了，各位，安静下来。大家最后一次用手机和外界联系是什么时候？

女孩：一小时前我和在孟菲斯（译者注：美国城市名）的表兄通了电话。他们正在往南方疏散。

警察：我们也该走。水已经结成够厚实的冰，我们可以在上面走了。我们应该在积雪更深之前动身离开。各位，以最快的速度裹好衣服吧。

Sam Hall: We shouldn’t go.

J.D.: Why not, Sam? Everyone is leaving.

Sam: When I talked to my dad, he told me to stay inside. The storm will kill anybody caught in it.

Laura Chapman: Then you have to say something.

Sam: I know. (to the policeman) Excuse me, sir, you’re making a mistake.

Policeman: What? Hey listen, son. We’re all scared, but we’ve got no choice.

Sam: That’s not it.

Policeman: Come on, kid. Get ready to go.

Sam: If these people go outside, they will freeze to death!

Policeman: Okay, what is this nonsense?

Sam: It’s not nonsense. Alright? Look, this storm is gonna get worse and the people who’re caught outside will freeze to death.

Librarian: Where are you getting this information?

Sam: My dad’s a 2)climatologist. He works for the government.

Librarian: So what are you suggesting we do?

Sam: We stay inside; we keep warm; and we wait it out.

Policeman: ②The snow is getting deeper by the minute. We’d be trapped here without food, supplies…

Sam: It’s a risk, yeah.

Policeman: An unnecessary risk.

Sam: No, no, no. It’s not.

Policeman: We’ve wasted enough time talking about this. Come on, people. Let’s go.

Sam: Look, look, look. Just look for a second.

Policeman: Come on, everybody.

Sam: One second. The storm is gonna get bad. It’s gonna get really, really bad. You’re not gonna be able to survive it. Believe me. Sir, please just stay. Just stay. Just don’t…don’t…

山姆·霍尔：我们不该走。

杰迪：为什么，山姆？大家都准备走了。

山姆：我和父亲通话时，他告诉我待在室内。他说所有遇到风暴的人都会丧命。

劳拉·查普曼：你应该告诉大家。

山姆：我知道。（对警察说）打扰一下，先生，你在犯一个大错。

警察：来吧，孩子，准备出发了。

山姆：如果这些人到室外去，他们会被冻死的！

警察：无稽之谈！

山姆：这不是无稽之谈，好吗？听着，风暴会越来越强，室外的人们会被冻死的。

图书管理员：这消息你从哪得知的？山姆：我爸爸是气象学家，他为政府工作。

图书管理员：那你说我们该怎么做？山姆：待在室内，取暖，等风暴过去。

警察：雪很快就会越积越厚，我们困在这里，没有食物，没有补给……

山姆：是在冒险，没错。

警察：是没必要的冒险。

山姆：不，不，不。这不是。

警察：我们已经浪费够多时间来讨论这个了。来吧，大伙，出发了。

山姆：听着，听着，听着。先等等。警察：出发吧，各位。

山姆：就等一会儿。风暴会越来越大，情况真的很糟糕。你们出去会丧命的。相信我。先生，请留下。请留下吧。就……别……

① Everyone, wrap yourselves up as fast as you can. 各位，以最快的速度裹好衣服吧。

wrap sb. up: wear warm clothes（穿暖和）。例如：It’s freezing out there. Be sure to wrap the kid up.外面非常冷，一定要让孩子穿暖和了。

② The snow is getting deeper by the minute.雪很快就会越积越厚。

by the minute: sth. changing very fast（事情变化的速度很快）。例如：

Jackie needed a transfusion as she was loosing blood by the minute.
