On December 18, 2000, the Tibet Autonomous Region held its economic work meeting in Lhasa. China s Tibet gets the following information at the meeting.

GDP: The GDP for the year 2000 was estimated at 11.65 billion Yuan, an increase of 9.3 percent from the previous year.

Industrial Production: The industrial output value was estimated at 1.792 billion Yuan, an increase of 8.2 percent from the previous year. Output of major manufactured products registered big increase. Shareholding system pressed ahead and the State-owned enterprises steered out of the red.

Tertiary Industry: The output value of the tertiary industry was estimated at 5.38 billion Yuan, an increase of 12.2 percent. Imports and exports totalled US$132 million, an increase of 30.2 percent from the previous year. Investment in the fixed assets added up to 6.658 billion Yuan, an increase of 17.6 percent from the previous year. A good batch of energy, communication, water works and other major projects were completed and put into service. The 2000 Hong Kong Investment Symposium was held and US$411 million was attracted. Fraternal provinces provided 520 million Yuan to Tibet for construction of 163 projects.

Energy Development: Seven counties have solar energy power stations at the county level. These and various other solar energy power stations have installed power generating capacity of 2,000 Kw. The largest solar energy power station has a generating capacity of 100 Kw. Solar energy water heaters are adopted for some 85,000 square meters.

According to the Customs, by the end of October, border trade value totalled US$84.63 million, 52.9 percent more than the same period of the previous year. This includes US$79.06 million for exports, an increase of 60.56 percent, and US$5.57 million for imports, a fall by 8.69 percent.

Urban Construction: In 2000, Lhasa saw construction of 12 major roads. Three more are still under construction. They involve a total investment of 300 million Yuan or more. Lhasa today is served by Beijing Road, Jiangsu Road, Lingor Road, Nyangri Road, Selha Road, Dangri Road, and No.1 and No.2 Ring Roads. A number of representative buildings have been built in the city.

By the end of 2000, tap water supply in cities and towns reached 320,000 cubic meters daily, serving 60 percent of urban residents. Some 230,000 urban residents use cooking gas.

Telecommunications: With Lanzhou-Xi an-Lhasa , Lhasa-Xigaze-Shannan-Nyingchi optical fiber cables and satellite ground reception stations put into service in Tibet, Tibet has had the telecommunication network featuring program-controlled exchanges, satellite communications, digital communications, and mobile phones. By September 2000, there were 158,980 line exchanges in Tibet. Telephone subscribers numbered 99,180. More than 46,000 people use mobile phones. There were 4.3 telephones out of 100 people in Tibet, and the rate was 22.6 percent for every 100 people in cities and towns. Tibet plans to have optical fiber cables to serve all prefectures and cities in 2003 and all counties in 2005, and all villages and towns will have access to telephones in 2004.

Publishing Business: Tibet Daily is published in both Chinese and Tibetan. The Tibet People s Radio Broadcasting Station, with wireless and other programs, covers 68 percent of the region s population. Tibet TV covers 63 percent of the region s population. In addition, the Xinhua News Agency, People s Daily, the Central People s Radio Broadcasting Station, and some other media have set up branches or reporters offices in Tibet. At present, there are 23 kinds of papers, 76 kinds of periodicals, two radio broadcasting stations, 36 short-wave stations, three TV and cable TV stations, 78 TV relay stations at and above county level, and 2,344 radio broadcasting stations in Tibet.

Public Health: Medical cooperative network covers 80 percent of the farming and livestock breeding areas in Tibet. About 97 percent of children are inoculated. Incidence of contagious diseases dropped to 8 per 1,000. Cooperation with Australia and some other countries was sought to renovate the water supply systems, with the result that 30 percent of the villages having access to tap water.

Tourism: By October 2000, Tibet received some 532,000 tourists from other parts of China and foreign countries, an increase of 41 percent from the same period of the previous year. They include 128,000 from foreign countires, an increase of 27 percent; and 404,000 from other parts of China, an increase of 47 percent. Tourism income totalled 620 million Yuan, an increase of 29.8 percent.
