Perfect Combination of the Body and Mind in Lady Chatterley s Lover

Abstract：In Lady Chatterleys Lover,D.H.Lawrence conveyed the praise for human nature and the harmonious physical relationship full of vitality and human integrity between Connie and Mellors.In this paper,I would like to deal with the perfect combination of the body and mind and the integrity and wholeness of human beings derived from the perfect physical union of the two sexes.

Introduction:

D.H.Lawrence had long been labeled as a pornographer in his later years with his works being misinterpreted by most of his peers,however,those very works of previous notoriety later proved to be profound,dealing with serious social,political and philosophical issues.In many of his books,he devoted himself to exploring human relationships,especially the sexual relationships,within the industrial setting,advocating human nature and criticizing the human alienation.

In Lady Chatterleys Lover,he bluntly and piously depicted the harmonious sexual activities based on the combination of the mind and the body between Connie and Mellors.This stood in stark contrast with the inanition and hollowness of Cliffords life circle,in which people only lived in their own ideas and paid much greater attention to the mind while ignored the importance of the body.People like Clifford represented the upper class in the industrial and capitalist society.And whats also in sharp contrast with Connie and Mellors were the hard and inanimate lives of the working class,especially coal miners in this novel.

Alienation of Sex in Society and Lawrences Praise for Human Nature

As Confucius once said,“The desire for food and sex is human nature.” In Lawrences opinion,sexual desire is the vitality and instinct of human beings.If we hope to resist the destructive power of capitalism,which represses human nature,we have to break the yoke of repression and give full development to human nature.And since sex is the most primitive and natural desire of human beings,Lawrence holds the idea that we cant live with the negation of it.

However,at his time,social morality in western civilization with the achievement of capitalism and industrialization,distorted human beings this instinct;and religion prohibited it.The cultivated civilization overemphasized the development of the mind while ignored the development of the body,thus the natural human instinct.In public,people were prohibited from discussing sex,but without any doubt,it was a basic physiological need for every healthy person to survive.The gap between peoples hypocritical aversion of that basic need and its absolute necessity inevitably repressed human beings nature,which then contributed to social alienation and broke the harmony in human relationships.
