The Teaching of Listening

Abstract: Listening is the Cinderella skill in second language learning. In people's daily communication, listening takes 45percent. However, the listening teaching approach is dominated by the paradigm of tape-playing - exercise-doing--answer-checking, As a result, learners may gradually lose their stimulation of learning of listening.This paper addresses the importance of listening in developing language proficiency and the teaching of listening in China. This article gives a brief account of improving student’s listening ability.

在第二语言的学习中,听力是后起之秀,是人们获取信息和提高说,读和写的重要途径。并且在人们的日常交际中,它占据百分之四十五的比例。然而,当今的大学英语听力教学现状不尽人意,在听力教学中,听录音一一做练习一一对答案的教学模式仍占据统治地位。这种教学方法与其说是传授学生听英语的方法,指导其解决听力过程所出现问题,还不如说是听力测试。长此以往学生将会失去听力学习的兴趣,阻碍学生听力能力的提高。本文讨论了在发展语言能力听力教学的重要性。这篇文章给出了提高学生的听力能力的简单介绍。

1 Introduction

As everyone knows that there are four skills in learning a language, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. Listening skill is a necessary ability which the College students should master in the university.The listening test based on the syllabus above is designed to assess the listening ability which the students have learned for longer time before.

All the listening skills and models are all performed and given to the students in the listening classes by the teachers. The students had a deeping understanding of this kind of knowledge before. So we express this assessment as CRT. By this assessment, we can get the conclusion that which students attain the objectives and which students don’t attain the objectives.

2 The ways and the methods to improve the listening ability

Studying can make students perceive the self-development in the course of cognitive knowledge.” So, teacher should follow student’s age, sex, physiology, psychology and different studying degree characteristics to launch many kinds of activities related to listening, pay attention to foster student’s correct listening motivation, and take the flexible teaching methods in English lessons.

It is important to realize that all tecent models involve both types of processing. Faerch and Kasper(1986:264), But overall, both are needed. Even the highly skilled listener will engage in bottom-up processing and , although some of the examples we have given of top-down processing have ended in inaccuracies(Britishlisteners adding possibly wrong information to the Indian stories, for example).

The vocabulary is the foundation of learning listening well. It is not all right by simple memorizing mechanically to expand the vocabulary. It must be through reading extensively.For instance “pride and prejudice”, “A Tale of Two Cities”, etc, English masterpiece. The combination between listening understanding and the knowledge of grammar is an effective way to improve the students’ listening abilities.

3 Conclusion

Generally speaking, according to the current situation on English learning and the difficulties of listening encountered, teacher pay forward the methods to improve the students’ listening ability. When they can use English to communicate with each other in their daily life, it is possible for them to make progress in their listening ability. However, listening teaching methods is an abstruse and knowledge system.
