Present at the conference were Huang Jian, publisher and president of Jieli Publishing House, Sarah MacLachlan, president of Groundwood Books and Anna Holmwood, translator of the English Language edition of Black Flame. It was announced that the English edition of Black Flame would be first published in Canada in spring 2013. Gerelchimeg Blackcrane, author of Black Flame transmitted VCR across the sea, expressing his expectation for its English version. This is another animal literature copyright export in recent years following Jiang Rong’s Wolf Totem, Yang Zhijun’s Tibetan Mastiff and Shen Shixi’s The Red Panther. Animal literature seems to be a new trend in the copyright export.

According to Mr. Huang Jian, Blackcrane’s books not only reflect his deep passion to animals, but also give you access to the boundless and desolate grasslands. Through the description of animal world, forests and grasslands, his books demonstrate the life and culture of the nomads of the northern China and a nature that is getting away from us and even disappears. Sarah MacLachlan, president of Ground Wood Books said that Blackcrane’s excellent works would also move the readers of the English-speaking countries. She would do her best to make the English edition a beautiful and successful book.

Gerelchimeg Blackcrane, winner of two Chinese National Children’s Literature awards, grew up on the grasslands of northern Mongolia with two ivory-white wolf dogs. He has written several novels that feature animals and reflect the lives of the nomadic people of Tibet and Mongolia as well as the beauty of the natural world. The copyright to his Black Flame have been sold to France and Canada.

It is a collection of animal-themed novels written by Blackcrane in recent years, including seven short and mid-length stories he wrote recently.

In the story of Children of the Wolf Valley, a boy named Naris lived in the prairie with his grandfather; they were lonely and only had each other. In one cold winter night, a group of hungry wolves attacked their camp again and again. To protect the sheep herd, shepherd dog Banug roared and crushed a wolf under his own body and ripped its throat…During the fierce fight, Banug’s eyes were scooped out by the wolves. Blind and staggering, he traced the smell of the wolves and dashed over. Banug sank his teeth into one wolf’s neck and wouldn’t let it go; however the other wolves ravaged his own body. Banug would rather die than retreat. He adhered to the shepherd dog’s mission.

In the story of Qinmuqie, Liuxia fell into the icy river to save a little deer, she choked down a few water and began to sink. Suddenly her arm was gripped - who had pulled and dragged ashore? In the cold winter, Liuxia went out to find the deer herd, a sudden blizzard came. She lost her way and was so worn out that she fell asleep in the snow. Who touched her face, dragged her clothes to pull her along the road? In the unexpected fire in the camp, Liuxia was choked by the strong smoke. Again, who dragged her collar and pulled her out of the tent? It is the shepherd dog Qinmuqie.

Cattle are diligent and honest, but have you seen a bull that gallops like a horse, that fights the wolves like a shepherd dog, or even resists the truck head with its own head? In Splendid, a calf with leopard spots in its skin is such a stubborn bull.

In an awe-inspiring tone, the author depicts the inner world of animals, both good and bad, love and hate, and the calling for the wild life, giving readers emotional agitation and profound reflection on life.
