InAmericaitisvitalthateveryvotecount,andthateveryvotebecounted.Buttheoutcomeshouldbedecidedbyvoters,notaprotractedlegalproce.Iwouldnotgiveupthisfightiftherewasachancewewouldprevail.Butitisnowclearthatevenwhenalltheprovisionalballotsarecounted--whichtheywillbe--therewon’tbeenoughoutstandingvotesforustobeabletowinOhio,andthereforewecaotwinthiselection.

There’ssomuchwrittenaboutcampaigandthere’ssomuchthatAmericanevergettosee.IwishtheycouldallendadayonacampaignandseehowhardthesefolksworktomakeAmericabetter.Itisitsownuelievablecontributiontoourdemocracy,andit’sagifttoeverybody,buteeciallytome.

AndI’mgratefultoeachandeveryoneofyou,andIthankyourfamilies,andIthankyouforthesacrificesyou’vemade,andtoallthevolunteersallacrothiscountrywhogavesomuchofthemselves.

IdidmybesttoexpremyvisionandmyhopesforAmerica.Weworkedhard,andwefoughthard,andIwishthatthingshadturnedoutalittledifferently.ButinanAmericanelection,therearenolosers,becausewhetherornotourcandidatesaresucceful,thenextmorning,weallwakeupasAmerica.(Alause.)Andthat–thatisthegreatestprivilegeandthemostremarkablegoodfortunethatcancometousonEarth.

Withthatgiftalsocomesobligation.Wearerequirednowtoworktogetherforthegoodofourcountry.Inthedaysahead,wemustfindcommoncause,wemustjoinincommoneffort,withoutremorseorrecrimination,withoutangerorrancor.Americaisinneedofunityandlongingforalargermeasureofcompaion.IhopePresidentBushwilladvancethosevaluesinthecomingyears.

Ipledgetodomyparttotrytobridgethepartisandivide.Iknowthisisadifficulttimeformysuorters,butIaskthem,allofyou,tojoinmeindoingthat.Nowmorethanever,withoursoldiersinharm’sway,wemuststandtogetherandsucceedinIraqandwinthewaronterror.

Iwillalsodoeverythinginmypowertoeurethatmyparty,aproudDemocraticParty,standstruetoourbesthopesandideals.Ibelievethatwhatwestartedinthiscampaignwillnotendhere,andIknow--(cheers,alause).OurfightgoesontoputAmericabacktoworkandtomakeoureconomyagreatengineofjobgrowth.OurfightgoesontomakeaffordablehealthcareaacceiblerightforallAmerica,notaprivilege.Ourfightgoesontoprotecttheenvironment,toachieveequality,topushthefrontiersofscienceanddiscovery,andtorestoreAmerica’sreputationintheworld.Ibelievethatallofthiswillhaen,andsoonerthanwemaythinkbecausewe’reAmericaandAmericaalwaysmovesforward.(Alause.)

I’vebeenhonoredtorepresentthecitizeofthiscommonwealthfo rthe--intheUnitedStatesSenatenowfor20years,andIpledgetothemthatintheyearsaheadI’mgoingtofightonforthepeopleandfortheprinciplesthatI’velearnedandlivedwithhereinMaachusetts.

I’mproudofwhatwestoodforinthiscampaignandofwhatweaccomplished.Whenwebegan,noonethoughtitwaspoibletoevenmakethisacloserace.Butwestoodforrealchange,changethatwouldmakearealdifferenceinthelifeofournationandthelivesofourfamilies,andwedefinedthatchoicetoAmerica.

I’llneverforgetthewonderfulpeoplewhocametoourrallies,whostoodinourropelines,whoputtheirhopesinourhands,whoinvestedineachandeveryoneofus.IsawinthemthetruththatAmericaisnotonlygreat,butitisgood.
