Chrysler Looks to Chinese Manufacturers

DaimlerChrysler is talking with several manufacturers in China about the possibility of building small, B-class size vehicles, company officials have said. Spokeswoman Lori McTavish said the Chrysler Group is interested in developing a small subcompact vehicle such as the Dodge Hornet, which was displayed at the Geneva Auto Show this past March, with help from a partner. "If we were going to build a small car like the Dodge Hornet, we'd have to take on a partner. It's not a project that we would do on our own," said McTavish, who declined to confirm a report in a trade publication that the Chrysler Group was discussing the project with Chery Automotive Co. Ltd. However, a Chrysler official who asked not to be identified, told AFP the company was talking with several Chinese automakers about the possibility of establishing a joint venture.

South American leaders are making peace with Bolivia's decision to nationalise its natural gas sector, hoping to diffuse tensions sparked by the Andean nation's radical petroleum industry takeover. The leaders of Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia also agreed to open talks on new prices for Bolivia's natural gas at a summit in May in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazo. At the summit, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested that state-owned company Petroleo Brasileiro SA could reverse its decision, announced a day earlier, to freeze investment in Bolivia because of the nationalisation decree.

Sony Delays First Blu-Ray Titles

Sony Pictures Entertainment is delaying the launch of its first titles on the new Blu-ray Disc high-definition video format for a month. The company had originally planned to ship eight movie titles on May 23 and seven more on June 13. Now the initial eight titles will ship on June 20 while a new launch date for the latter seven has not been decided, said Sony Pictures. The delay is unlikely to inconvenience consumers as the first Blu-ray Disc player isn't expected to be available until five days later on June 25.

A U.S. appeals panel challenged the Bush administration over new rules making it easier for police and the FBI to wiretap Internet phone calls. One judge told the government its courtroom arguments were "gobbledygook" and invited its lawyer to return to his office and "have a big chuckle". The skepticism expressed so openly toward the government's case during a hearing in U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Columbia emboldened a broad group of civil liberties and education groups who argued that the U.S. improperly applied telephone-era rules to a new generation of Internet services. "Your argument makes no sense," U.S. Circuit Judge Harry T. Edwards told the lawyer for the Federal Communications Commission.

David Beckham likely to Lose Captaincy

It looks like David Beckham will no longer be England captain after the World Cup. Steve McClaren will take over as manager from Sven-Goran Eriksson at the start of August and, when the question of Beckham's captaincy was raised at his first news conference in May, McClaren didn't exactly give the Real Madrid star a ringing endorsement. "That is something I don't want to discuss here," he said. "I don't think it's right to discuss here. We have got a World Cup coming up. That's my sole focus and attention on the squad and giving Sven my full support and backing. He's captain at the present moment under Sven." Eriksson made Beckham the England captain early in his five-year reign as coach and there is a growing feeling that other players - such as Chelsea centerback John Terry or Liverpool's Steven Gerrard - might be better suited to the role.

Serena Takes More Time Off for Injury

Serena Williams could miss both the French Open and Wimbledon while she takes several months off to recover from a chronic left knee injury. "What I can tell you today, based on what I am being told by my doctors, is that I should be in a position to be playing again by the end of this summer," Williams said in a statement released by her publicist. The French Open was held in May and Wimbledon begins June 26. The year's final Grand Slam tournament, the U.S. Open, starts August 28. Williams has played in just four matches over the last eight months. Her only tournament this year was the Australian Open, where she lost in the third round. CBS Corp. has launched a Web site that will offer new programming as well as some of its existing TV shows, as competition intensifies between broadcasters and Internet firms such as Google. Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Warsfilms on DVD. Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals. Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy). Lucas re-released his original three Star Wars films in theaters in 1997 with inserted scenes and improved special effects. The additional material was of highly variable quality and some fans believe it diminishes the films.

A portrait by Pablo Picasso depicting the woman he called his "private muse" has sold for US$95.2m, the second-highest amount ever paid for a painting at auction. Dora Maar au Chat went to an anonymous buyer during a spring auction of Impressionist and modern art at Sotheby's in New York. The painting almost doubled its pre-sale estimate, putting it within touching distance of the highest price paid for any artwork sold at auction, Picasso's Garcon á la Pipe, which went for more than $104m in May 2004.

The country is suffering from a crippling trade embargo and is locked in a war of words with its neighbour, Russia. Things are so bad for Georgia that the tiny Caucasus state had decided only one thing could rescue its image: Jennifer Lopez. The government has offered the American dancer turned singer, actor and fashion icon US$500,000 to go to Georgia to celebrate Independence Day in the capital, Tbilisi, on May 26. She was also asked to help promote one of Georgia's most economically important products, wine, which was badly affected by what Tbilisi claims was a politically charged import ban imposed by the drink's biggest consumer, Russia. But in an acute embarrassment to President Mikhail Saakashvili's administration, Lopez rejected the offer, reportedly setting unrealistic conditions for her appearance and holding out for a much larger fee.
