1000座位的墨尔本音乐中心及500座位的MTC剧院,连座于Southbank,平分秋色却又相得益彰,二者与市民景观广场一道成为墨尔本建筑艺术的璀璨明珠。

墨尔本音乐中心的主要功能为室内音乐演奏,其中有容纳1000名听众的Elisabeth Murdoch 大厅和150座的乐前讨论沙龙及排练厅。其木质镶面的表演厅为音乐演奏提供了绝佳的声乐传达媒介。整栋建筑设计了全面的后台支持室和多层休息厅,透过多层休息厅,还可以欣赏完美的城市天际线,感受音乐在大自然中的舞动。

建筑设计的概念来源于建筑本身的结构――“盒子里的盒子”,这种结构有一个极大的优势就是能为音乐演奏创造一个天然的保温盒。

新剧院是墨尔本剧院公司的常驻之地,其中包括500座的Sumner剧院、一排式的观众席、拱形幕布舞台、高空摄像塔和后台。除此之外还有只有150座的Lawler工作室,供小制作或者排练之用, 其外观采用喷漆镀铝防锈钢管安装而成,整个外观造型无论对二维还是三维空间都是一个极大的挑战。我们所见的平面造型看起来像两维,其实它是三维的。

剧院本身的特性通过建筑外观表达得淋漓尽致,交通便利和得天独厚的地理位置优势(剧院位于Southbank大道和Dodds街的交接处)。剧院设计既通透、敞亮又方便观众,站在休息厅的第一层便可见美丽的城市天际线,中场休息时也可以品上一杯清凉可口的饮料。

The 1000 seat Melbourne Recital Centre and 500 seat MTC Theatre, colocated on their Southbank site, have distinct but complementary identities. Accessed from a landscaped civic plaza that addresses Southbank Boulevard, together they create an exciting new civic space within Melbourne’s vibrant arts precinct.

The Melbourne Recital Centre has been designed primarily as a chamber music venue with the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall seating 1000 music lovers, and the 150 seat Salon space for pre-concert talks and experimental chamber music.

The timber paneling of the performance spaces provides the best possible acoustic for recital music.

The building also includes comprehensive backstage support accommodation and a multilevel foyer space whose interior is highly visible from the exterior and provides patrons with spectacular views back toward the city skyline.

The design emerged from the idea that the building itself, with its ‘box inside a box’ structure, serves as a kind of packaging for the precious music within.

The new drama theatre, the first permanent home for the Melbourne Theatre Company, features the 500 seat Sumner Theatre, a single tier, proscenium arch theatre which includes a full fly tower and backstage accommodation for actors and technical staff.

There is also the 150 seat Lawler Studio for smaller productions and rehearsals. The facade system is composed of iridescent painted steel pipework mounted proud of black aluminum cladding. The overall façade pattern challenges spatial perceptions through the blurring of 2 & 3 dimensional spacesthat which appears shaped is actually flat, and likewise, a 2 dimensional surface is actually 3 dimensional.

A connection with the nature of theatrical production is made explicit and celebrated on the outside of the building. The theatre is prominently located on the corner of Southbank Boulevard and Dodds St where it can be seen from St Kilda Road. The first level foyer to the theatre will provide patrons with views back to the city skyline as they enjoy a drink during intervals.
