Facing the threat of the Internet, the traditional newspaper is thinking about what it can do to meet the challenge. To make teenagers get into the habit of reading, the French government is considering what kind of efforts it should make. It seems that the two questions have nothing to do with each other, but a recent announcement made by French President has connected these two questions together. The announcement gives an answer to both of them.

French President announced a plan for France’s ailing print media, including measures to save printing and distribution costs. The plan also gives French teenagers a surprise as their 18-year-old birthday gift: France will offer all 18-year-olds a free daily copy of the newspaper of their choice.

“The habit of reading the press should start at a very young age,” the President said, presenting the conclusion after talking to a group of journalists and officials in Paris. The president said the newspapers themselves would provide free copies for 18-year-olds, while the state would cover the cost of delivering them to many thousands of homes.

The plan is an attempt to introduce teenagers, who frequently only get their news online, to the delights of the printed world. A similar idea has been tested by L’Ouest-France over the past few years. It offered some 18 to 24-year-olds a free paper once a week for a year. L’Ouest-France reported that 15% of the young people wanted to continue with a paid subscription(订阅)after the year was over.

People in France welcome the plan which should get more kids interested in latest affairs and make reading be a pastime, as well as save the newspaper industry.

Are you ready to do your bit to stop global warming? Do you want to let the world know that you believe it is not doing nearly enough to fight against climate change?

On every Saturday in March, you will have a chance to communicate your worries—to tell Ottawa and the entire world that you are devoted to doing your part.

You can do it by turning off your lights during Earth Hour, from 8 pm to 9 pm. Started in 2007 by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia. Earth Hour this year continues going international, with 17 cities having signed up so far, including Toronto. Others include Chicago, Manila, Tel Aviv, Copenhagen, Melbourne, and Christchurch, New Zealand.

Of course, one hour of darkness isn’t going to stop global warming. But the thinking behind Earth Hour is that it gets people personally involved. Besides giving people a chance to share their worries about climate change, the goal is to get them to start changing their wasteful habits, and we all have them, including some we even don’t know.

Do you know, for example, that you are still drawing power if you leave your cellphone charger plugged in(插上插头)after charging your phone? The same is true for other electronic devices that you think you’ve turned off.

If you want to make a difference, sign up today at http://www.wwf.ca/EarthHour and make a promise to turn off your lights when Earth Hour arrives on March 31. Persuade your friends, co-workers and your employers or employees to do their part.

But don’t wait for this symbolic action to raise awareness. We all have to be part of this way of solving problems. Start from today to think about changes that can be made in your home and your workplace that will cut down on waste and reduce green house gas sending out.

Although many Chinese students say they have a good knowledge of English grammar, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students, they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain poor! I would suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.

Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. You want to get your message across, then you should talk to someone in English, as quickly and as well as you can. Even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for you.

Third, no enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.

Fourth, most Chinese students are inactive rather than proactive(积极的)language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their spoken English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
