About the book

Huang Xiaoyang, expert of the history of Second World War, was curious about his grandmother’s death, so he went to Chongqing from Nanjing on purpose and looked for Professor Li Bensen who was once the neighbor of her grandparents and friend of his grandfather, in hope of getting details about his grandmother’s being shot by Japanese troops. In Chongqing Huang Xiaoyang accidentally heard that Professor Li’s third wife, An Zhiwei had unusual friendship with his father and uncle. At that time An Zhiwei was diagnosed with a strange disease, which made Huang unable to go into her house but enabled him to meet Du Yunqiu, daughter of director Du and talented woman in art circle and fall in love with her. Therefore, he was transferred to Chongqing and worked as a history teacher in Yuzhou University of Arts and Sciences where Professor Li taught, direction of whose academic research shifted from former Nanking Massacre to Bombing of Chongqing. He insisted that real history was not coffin and tomb locked by time, but history of people’s mind, which was open and inevitably related to today and tomorrow. Consequently, he paid much attention to those buried history details. However, all witnesses of Bombing of Chongqing, including Professor Li, An Zhiwei, his father-in-law director Du and his own uncle, decided to be silent. Afterwards, An Zhiwei finally opened her mouth, but according to what she said, except Bombing of Chongqing, there was a bombing unlike Bombing of Chongqing… The further Huang Xiaoyang made researches about the history, the deeper he was trapped in the mire of people’s mind. His wife Du Yunqiu could not bear such heavy spiritual pressure and looked for alternative extrication and consolation. Huang Xiaoyang broke down and committed suicide finally. After his death, posthumous papers of An Zhiwei and works of Professor Li published in Japan revealed astonishing identity of An Zhiwei and the secret carved in people’s hearts by the war.

About the book

If every nation has its own Bible, there will be more wonderful qualities come down in this world!

In Guangxu years, a smallpox epidemic broke out in a tribe called Mukun in Oroqen in the northern China, which caused many deaths. The chief Mergen drove seven horse-drawn sledges, escaping towards the upper course of a river along a glacier, leading the surviving adults and children.

After all difficulties and hazards, people were trapped and horses died. They had to choose a place near the mountain and by the river to build wooden pole rooms and established a new Uriln. With the world changing and disaster continuing, Mergen was seriously ill and selected Urison as chief, who was killed by boar, then Yu Youhua, who went crazy later. Finally the 18-year-old girl Gerard became chief of Uriln. They suffered plague, snow disaster, wars, fire disaster, flash flood and other natural and man-made disasters during the several-decade long forest life and migrated for five times. They fished, hunted, picked up vegetables and fruits for filling the stomach. In ordinary life, they divined, sacrificed, and during birth and death, weddings and funerals, though population got larger once, after escaped and death, only sixteen people left in the end. In the last disastrous calamity, they were nowhere to be found.

Under the great background, many dullness and radiance were demonstrated fully, and oroqen‘s old customs and rites rarely known by people were disclosed through stories and different fates of characters. It constructed a human ideal state, in which everyone was kind to each other, equal to each one, helpful to each one, original, fair, and just.

The novel shaped a lot of distinguished and lovely characters, told stories never heard before, set striking plots and described a glamorous situation, which brought people into a beautiful world, mysterious, exotic, distant, strange but full of human-caring.
