Singer Whitney Houston Dies at 48

Grammy Award?鄄winning singer and actress Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48.

Houston, inspired by soul singers in her New Jersey family, became one of the most celebrated female singers of all time, taking multiple Emmy, Grammy and Billboard Music awards.

Her popularity soared in the 1980s and 1990s with her song I Will Always Love You being continued No. 1 hits, which was from the soundtrack of the feature film The Bodyguard. The soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy for Album of the Year.

China Loan Two Pandas to Canada

China on Saturday agreed to loan two of the country’s precious giant pandas to Canadian zoos for a 10?鄄year research program. The panda pair, both around five years old, will stay in Toronto and Calgary zoos for five years each after they arrive in Canada, according to the agreement.

The male panda, named “Er Shun”, is from a zoo in Chongqing and the female “Ji Li” lives in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Giant pandas are one of the world’s most endangered species. Most of them live in Sichuan. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper witnessed Saturday’s signing ceremony during his visit to Chongqing. “They will be the first pair of pandas to visit Canada since the 1980s,” said Harper.

Premier Wen Meets the 11th Panchen Lama

During the meeting, Wen Jiabao, who is also a member of the Standing Committee（常务委员会）of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau（中央委员会）, offered his best wishes to the Panchen Lama and all Tibetan compatriots in advance of Tibetan New Year, which will fall on Feb 22.

The premier heard a report by the Panchen Lama about his life and work since he had been enthroned for 17 years. Wen congratulated the Panchen Lama on the marked progress he has made on Buddhist research and cultural aspects, noting that the Panchen Lama has done well as a Living Buddha of the Tibetan Buddhism.

China opposes armed intervention（武装干涉） or forcing a so?鄄called regime（政体） change in Syria, China’s deputy permanent representative（常驻代表） to the UN Wang Min said in explanatory remarks.
