CE: Teens早在今年的3月号就详细介绍了《霍顿与无名氏》（又译《霍顿奇遇记》），但今年的大片出碟速度都很慢，直到最近Wendy才找到这部动画片的高音质版本，不过刚好与本期的主题不谋而合，真可谓“来得早不如来得巧”，咔咔。
今年的万圣节过得开心吗？在众多越来越商业化、形式化的大众节日里，为什么只有万圣节仍然保留着那份原始的诡谲？是不是因为大多数人仍然保留着那份对未知的好奇？尽管科学的进步和平淡的生活让小时候众多令人心慌的神秘故事渐渐褪色，但大自然的每个角落都遗留着无数未解的谜题―愿大家一直保有一颗孩子般的关注、好奇和幻想之心。谁知道呢，也许你会像霍顿那样，某一天，突然发现这个世界的另一处神奇风景……
大象霍顿听见一粒灰尘上传来声音，他好不容易用三叶草的小花接住了随风飘动的灰尘，这举动偏偏让向来对霍顿诸多不满的袋鼠看见了……
Kangaroo: Horton!
Horton: Oh, sorry. I...I just...there was this speck[一小点], and...they called out for help, and I was...
Kangaroo: The speck...called out for help?
Horton: Well, not the speck, I mean that’s ridiculous[可笑的]. Is that what you thought I meant? No, the speck can’t call out for help. Come on, get real! No, there’s a tiny person on that speck that needs my help.
Kangaroo: (laughs) Absurd[荒谬的]. There aren’t
people that small.
Horton: Well, maybe they aren’t small. Maybe...
we’re big.
Kangaroo: Horton!
Horton: No! Really, think about it. What if there is someone way out there, looking down on our world right now? And to them, we’re the specks.
Kangaroo: There is nothing on that speck.
Horton: But I heard.
Kangaroo: Did you? Really? Oh my! Then how come I don’t hear anything?
Horton: Well…
Kangaroo: If you can’t see, hear, or feel something,
it doesn’t exist. And believing in tiny imaginary
people is just not something we do, or tolerate[容忍] here in the Jungle of Nool.
Horton: Really? ’Cause I bet if I really tried I could find somebody who’d believe what I’m saying…
Kangaroo: You will do nothing of the sort. You will not breathe a word of this lie to[将……告诉某人] anyone
else, especially the children. I do not want you
poisoning their minds with this nonsense. Our
community[社区] has standards, Horton. If you wanna remain a part of it, I recommend you follow them.
(After Kangaroo has left, Horton goes on to study the speck.)
Horton: I don’t understand. I know I heard you. It was as plain as the nose on my face. That’s it! Maybe you can’t hear me! Of course! Your ears must be tiny! I need to speak up! (Horton gasps.) Hello!
Narrator: Now some people out there I think I know who they find they agree with that sour[坏脾气的]
Kangaroo, “There can’t really be people as small as [a] mice注.” Well, there can, and there are. Because Horton was right. That single “Hello” traveled all the way down to the speck, through the clouds, till it found a small town a town known as Whoville,
for there live the Whos, really happy and safe,
knowing only good news, unaware that their world was a speck on a clover[三叶草，苜蓿], unaware that the sweet life they knew might be over.
袋鼠：霍顿！
霍顿：哦，抱歉。我……我只是……这儿有一粒灰尘，而且……有人在呼救，然后
我……
袋鼠：灰尘……呼救？
霍顿：哦，不是灰尘在呼救，我是说―这太荒谬了。你以为我是这个意思吗？不，灰尘怎么可能会呼救。拜托，现实点儿！不，灰尘上有个小人儿，他需要我帮忙。

霍顿：不！真的，想想吧。要是有人在高高的上方俯瞰我们的世界，那会怎样呢？对他们而言，我们也只是灰尘而已。
袋鼠：灰尘上没有任何东西。
霍顿：但我听见声音了。
袋鼠：你听见了？真的吗？天啊！那我怎么什么都听不到？
霍顿：这个嘛……
袋鼠：如果你看不到、听不见，又感觉不到，这东西就压根儿不存在。而且相信一些虚构小人儿的存在，这不是我们在诺尔森林里该做的、能容许的事情。
霍顿：真的吗？因为我敢打赌，只要我努力找一下，一定会找到相信我的人……
袋鼠：不准你做这样的事情。不准你将这些谎话透露给别人，特别是孩子们。我不会让你的连篇鬼话毒害他们的心灵。家有家规，霍顿。如果你还想在这里混，你就得遵守这里的规矩。
（袋鼠走了之后，霍顿继续研究这粒灰尘。）
霍顿：我真搞不懂。我明明听见你的声音了，就像我确定自己脸上长着鼻子一样。对了！或许你们听不见我说话！当然！你的耳朵肯定很小！我得放开嗓门！（霍顿深呼吸。）你好！
旁白：有些人―我猜我知道是谁―会同意坏脾气袋鼠的话：“不可能会有人长得像老鼠那么小。”哦，当然可能，而且的确有。因为霍顿是对的。这句简单的“你好”一直传到灰尘上，穿过云层，最后落到一个小镇―这个小镇叫“无名村”，因为这里住着“无名氏”。他们在此地安居乐业，听见的都是好消息，从未意识到他们的世界只不过是三叶草上的一粒小灰尘，也没意识到他们熟悉的舒适生活可能走到头了。
口语锦囊
虽然动画片的受众一般都是年轻人，但其语言难度可不低哦―尤其是在一堆角色聚在一起唧唧喳喳的时候，甭说光听声音，就是看着画面都能让人眼花缭乱、晕头转向。本期的原声材料却和大多数动物当主角的吵闹片子很不一样，其中“安静”的双人对话特别多，让大家得以体会和学习英语动画片的两大声音特质：丰富多变的语音语调和生动传神的精湛演技。

无名村的镇长麦克多德发现小镇出现一些异常现象，但他的顾虑被镇议会主席嗤之以鼻。他郁闷地回到办公室，突然听见屋外的排水管传来奇怪的声音……
Horton: Who’s there?
McDodd: Uh, this is the Mayor.
Horton: The Mayor? The Mayor! I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it. I knew it…I knew there was life on this speck!
McDodd: The speck? What speck?
Horton: Well...I don’t exactly know how to tell you this, but...you’re living on a speck.
McDodd: Well, I hate to disagree with you, oh, voice from the drainpipe[排水管], but I live in Whoville.
Horton: Well, then Whoville’s a speck.
McDodd: Right, okay. Seriously, who is this? Is this Bert from accounting[会计]?
Horton: No. This is Horton. I’m an elephant.
McDodd: Okay, “Horton,” big name. Where are you?
Horton: Well, from where you standing, I guess
I’m...in the sky. Your whole world fits on a flower in my world. Don’t believe me? Watch what happens when I put you in the shade. Dark! Light! Don’t you see? We’re in the middle of some kind of amazing
cosmic[宇宙的] convergence[会聚]! Two vastly different
worlds miraculously[奇迹般地] crossing paths! Somehow we’ve managed to make contact! If you think about it, it’s pretty amazing!
霍顿：你是谁？
麦克多德：呃，我是镇长。
霍顿：镇长？镇长！我就知道，我就知道，我就知道，我就知道，我就知道……我就知道灰尘上有人！
麦克多德：灰尘？什么灰尘？

霍顿：不，我是霍顿。我是一头大象。
麦克多德：好吧，“霍顿”，真是个响亮的名字。你在哪里？

口语锦囊
“hate”加上不带宾语的不定式这种用法在口语中经常遇到，表示“为……感到抱歉”，后半句一般是不太好的消息或者否定别人前面说的话，但语气不那么正式，显得更委婉。例如：
I hate to tell you this, but I’ve just damaged your car. （很抱歉不得不告诉你，我刚刚弄坏了你的
汽车。）
霍顿听见声音这件事在孩子当中流传开来，连袋鼠的儿子也幻想自己的三叶草上有个小朋友，恼火的袋鼠再次找上门……
Kangaroo: Horton! (Kids run away.) What do you think you’re doing? Have you forgotten what we discussed?
Horton: Oh, no. I’m an elephant. And elephants never forget. It’s a curse, really.
Kangaroo: Give me that clover, Horton. Now.
Horton: No.
Kangaroo: No?
Horton: (scared) Yea…
Kangaroo: Are you sure you wanna fight this fight, Horton? Because I promise you it will get very ugly, very fast. And you need to ask yourself, “Do I really wanna put myself through all this? For a clover?” Take it from me[相信我的话], Horton, you don’t. So hand it over.
Horton: (hiding the clover from Kangaroo) No! There are people on this speck. Granted. They’re very small people. But a person’s person, no matter how small.
Kangaroo: You just crossed the line, Horton. And I’m gonna make you pay.
袋鼠：霍顿！（孩子们逃走。）你以为自己在干什么？你忘记我们之前的谈话了吗？
霍顿：哦，不。我是一头大象，大象从不忘事。这是个诅咒，真的。

口语锦囊
平时我们接触到的“grant”多表示“允许，同意”或者“授予，恩准”，但这个词还有别的特殊用法―这里出现的“granted”，用于表示虽然承认对方没错，但后面又补充上自己的不同看法，例如：
A: We were very successful last year. （我们去年很成功。）
B: Granted. But can we do it again this year? （不错，不过今年还能保持下去吗？）
而“granted that”则用于和人辩论时，表示“假定，假使”，例如：
Granted that he should send money to help pay the bills, it doesn’t mean he will. （即使他应拿出钱来帮忙付账，也不意味着他会这么做。）
袋鼠让秃鹰去袭击霍顿，但霍顿带着三叶草成功逃脱。袋鼠于是召开森林大会……
Kangaroo: What is happening to the Jungle of Nool? There once was a time when people were people, and specks were specks. Well, I say if you can’t see it, hear it, or feel it, it doesn’t exist. Our way of life is under attack. Are we going to let troublemakers like Horton poison the minds of our children?
The Crowd: Not the children!
Kangaroo: When Horton tells our children about worlds beyond the jungle, he makes them question authority, which leads to defiance[公然挑衅], which leads to anarchy[混乱]!
The Crowd: Yeah! Horton must pay! / It’s that speck! / We have to do something! / For the children! / For the children!
Kangaroo: Are we going to let him get away with this?
The Crowd: No! Let’s get him!
(The animals find Horton.)
Kangaroo: Horton, Horton, Horton! Look at that mess you’ve created for yourself. All this hullabaloo[喧嚣] over us is a silly little flower.
Horton: It’s a speck.
Kangaroo: Right. I mean, it’s silly, really, all this talk of roping you and caging you, and, well, we don’t need to go into the details. The point is this angry mob[成群暴徒] all a trouble you’re in it can all go away.
Horton: Really?
Kangaroo: Of course. All you have to do is admit to everyone that there are no little people living on that speck, that you were wrong and I was right. You do that, and things can go right back to the way they were. But, if you don’t, you’re going to have to pay the price.
(The animals carry out a huge cage.)
Horton: So, I just have to say it isn’t true? (Horton makes up his mind.) Go ahead! Rope me! Cage me! Do whatever you want! But there are people on this speck. And they have a Mayor, who has 96 daughters and one son named JoJo, who all share a “bathroom,” whatever that is. And even though you can’t hear or see them at all, a person’s a person, no matter how small.
袋鼠：诺尔森林到底怎么了？曾几何时，人就是人，灰尘就是灰尘。哦，依我看，如果你看不见、听不到，也感觉不到某种东西，那东西就不存在。我们的生活方式如今受到冲击。我们要放任像霍顿这样的祸害毒害孩子们的心灵吗？
众人：不能害了孩子！
袋鼠：霍顿告诉孩子们丛林之外的世界，令他们质疑权威，导致他们挑衅父母的威信，这会带来混乱！

（动物们找到霍顿。）
袋鼠：霍顿，霍顿，霍顿！瞧瞧你给自己搞出来的烂摊子。我们这样兴师动众，为的不过是一朵可笑的小花。
霍顿：这是一粒灰尘。
袋鼠：好吧。我的意思是，说实话，这些说要把你捆起来关进笼子―哦，其它就不详谈了―所有这些话都太傻了。关键在于，这些愤怒的民众―还有你惹出来的所有麻烦，全部可以一笔勾销。
霍顿：真的吗？
袋鼠：当然。你只需要向大家承认那粒灰尘上没住着什么小人儿，承认你错了，我才是对的。只要你承认错误，一切就能回复原样。但你若一意孤行，就得为此付出代价。
（动物们抬出一个大笼子。）
霍顿：那我只要说这一切都不是真的就行了？（霍顿下定决心。）你们动手吧！把我捆起来！把我关起来！你们想怎么处置我都可以！但这粒灰尘上确实有人。他们还有一位镇长，他有96个女儿和一个名叫“乔乔”的儿子，他们一家人共用一个“卫生间”―天晓得那是什么东西。即使你们无法听见他们的声音，也无法看见他们的身影，生命就是生命，不管那是多么渺小的存在。

正如前面所说，语音语调的变化和表演技巧的运用在这次的电影原声中得到了充分体现。尤其在塑造袋鼠一角时，Carol Burnett通过丰富的抑扬顿挫让这个自以为是、喜欢对人指手画脚的“权威人士”顿时活灵活现，跃然纸上。从头到尾再听一遍，重点模仿袋鼠的语音语调。感兴趣的同学不妨再拉上几个朋友，一起将最后这场精彩的森林大会表演出来。Have fun！
