The application of Chinese traditional decoration pattern is very extensive in modern design field. It is applicable for the art types of taking graphic modeling as the feature, such as painting, photography, illustration and poster. In addition, it is also suitable for the model art design of taking graphics as the foundation and transferring into three-dimension, such as book design, package design, logo design, animation design, industrial design, environmental design, costume design, etc. Pattern, as an important part of modern design, influences the human civilization development, promoting the human visual conveying to make constant progress. From ancient painted pottery, bronze ware decoration pattern to Tang three-color, they reflect the wide application of Chinese ancient pattern, thus, pattern has become the classics of decoration pattern art in the world. In short, whether for the absorption for Chinese modern traditional decoration pattern and traditional decoration technique or the modern decoration concept and design ideology reflection, the application of pattern in modern design is irreplaceable.

1. The Decoration Pattern of Package Design

Package design is a set of design art science of combining practical technology science, marketing and aesthetics. Package design itself has its special features. From the perspective of design, “packaging” is to use a certain material to wrap up the thing, and its basic purpose is to protect things not to be destroyed and convenient for transportation. This is the actual scientific range, which belongs to substance concept. “Decoration” refers to the decoration of things. This refers to that people use different techniques to decorate the wrapped things, making parcel more beautiful from outside appearance. So this is aesthetic range, which belongs to cultural concept.

In modern design, package design and traditional pattern color, modeling and materials have a close relationship. Based on considering commodity feature, it can follow some basic principles of brand design. The commodity picture, texts and background configuration in package pattern should attract customers’ attention to directly promote the brand. Packaging pattern is more specific, more powerful and more convincing than the brand name for stimulating customers, which normally has the immediate purchase behavior.

The package pattern requires its simple lines, lively personality and reasonable collocation of color to leave a deep impression on consumers. Mr. Chen Youjian has made a breakthrough in modern package design, cleverly combining traditional elements and modern design and expressing profound national cultural feature and atmosphere.

2. Decoration Pattern of Logo Design

Logo design, as an important part of modern design, uses special decoration patterns to express specific things, events, places and abstract spirit and concept, which makes people see the logo and naturally produce the association, in order to produce the identity for the brand.

In logo design, the Chinese model art inherits Chinese traditional art concept. It is different from western aesthetic taste of emphasizing image and vivid. It focuses more on “vivid” but not on “realistic”, pursuing “great” romantic elegant realm in artistic conception.

The emblem of Hongkong Phoenix TV Station refers to the “happy reunion” pattern of the Chinese traditional art, reflecting a thick national cultural feature. When the two phoenixes face each other, the rotating wings are of highly dynamics, reflecting the auspicious, thriving and perfect meaning. The decoration pattern for future hope and longing shows the feature technique of Chinese traditional art expression.

3. The Decoration Pattern of Text Design

Many Chinese texts are pictographic, with strong pattern features and pictographic and semantic role. Using Chinese characters to design logo is a very interesting thing. When designers use a lot of construction methods, they must be infatuated with the ancient people’s wisdom when they return to Chinese character pattern modeling. From the Oracle, Chinese characters appear in pictogram form. It is ancient and modern, passing through several thousands of years’ time and space, and today, we should give full play to the ancient exuberant vitality of Chinese characters.

The character “beauty” of Chinese character is composed of “sheep” and “large”. “Sheep” and “large” for “beauty” is the aesthetic concept of Chinese tradition. In Chinese characters, many good words and characters are related with “sheep”. Thus, using the “sheep” idea not only has the leading sheep meaning to lead the Asia, but also means that Guangzhou people take the best attitude to welcome 2010 Asian Games, contributing the best things to Asia and people all over the world.

The first group of precious metal commemorative coin of 29th Olympic Games issued by People’s Bank of China, gold coins and silver coins’ positive decoration patterns are Chinese traditional dragon’s model and the emblem, country name and title of the 29th session of Olympic Games. The back decoration pattern design of gold coin takes the sports as the theme, and the main scenery is the sports model action of Chinese traditional sports culture, respectively, equestrian sports styling and archery sports style. The history span is from Eastern Han Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, and Northern Zhou Dynasty to Ming Dynasty, about 1600 years. Corresponding to the main historical tradition sports figure modeling, it is the sports item pattern of the 29th session of Olympic Games. The overall design of the coin uses the Chinese historical tradition as the unified style of Wadang model, and it conducts proper overlapping of coin body and Wadang edge, making the coin lively and vivid. The back of decoration pattern has strong national style, which has lively expressed long Chinese sports history culture and is of Chinese feature.

4. The Decoration Pattern of Advertisement Design

In China, advertisement has a long history. In the Warrring States period, the verbal advertisement of “spear and shield”---“ Han Feizi” described “staring at the son” in “flag hanging high”. In Song Dynasty, the “flyers” produced by printing can be regarded as the embryonic form of advertising, which are the examples of advertisement history in China.

In advertising design, whether the copy or the designed decoration pattern, they should display the commodity and express a thought, finally achieving a commercial purpose. Their difference is that: copy can use the texts to express the superiority of commodity, and the designed decoration pattern is to express the commodity uniqueness to be more attractive. This two should complement each other and use their respective features to attract consumers to get attention.

Each graphic advertisement has its purpose. In this premise, different decoration patterns should have one to conform to the entire request feature. To form a unity in the whole and have a change in the local part, it can make readers achieve the tone unity in mental feeling. The famous Hongkong design master Jin Daiqiang creates a lot of culture posters. He advocates the essence of Chinese traditional culture to integrate into the western modern design concept. Many of his works embody the idea. In designing “free” series, it uses Chinese traditional ink painting decoration patterns to integrate into the special mechanism effect of modern technology, modern and also traditional.

5. Decoration Pattern of Textile Design

In traditional patterns, people can regularly summarize the changeable factors, making them become ordered change and unity. In the whole layout, it can make different shapes well-proportioned, arranged reasonably, achieving the visual tidy and beautiful feelings. In modeling, color and processing methods, we can use unified techniques to make it in order, for example, in traditional patterns, flower in flower, leaf in flower, flowers with leaves pattern expression. Second, another example is a floral pattern image that collects the advantages of many flowers to perfectly tell the power of beauty and combination creation. We can find that many works in modern textile pattern have successfully used these artistic change techniques to make pictures achieve a satisfactory effect. Traditional pattern feature is shape producing “image”. In image shaping, sometimes it expresses a certain emotion and wish.

Traditional decoration theme also uses a certain plant to symbolize the personality ideal, such as “Meilan Zhuju”, “Bengu Zhirong”, “Suihansanyou”etc. It uses pine’s straight, bamboo’s clean spirit and lotus’s elegance, Meilan’s proud spirit to refer to human quality and moral spirit, with morality in the matter, in order to highlight the artistic beauty of creators for ethics pursuit.

6. Decoration Pattern of Animation Design

Animation is an integrated visual art. The visual design on human vision has an important position in animation creation. Combined with visual design theory and the representative cases, it can take an analysis of pattern language in animation design.

In 20th Century, Chinese animation uses its prominent national style feature to enjoy the “Chinese school” reputation. From traditional art house, it discovers useful animation elements and interprets in fabrication, which is an important technique to reflect national feature in Chinese animation creation.

Zhang Guangyu designs animation “Havoc in Heaven” figure, absorbing the cartoon style in “Journey to the West”. It creates Song Wukong image with Chinese drama face and folk version picture, thus creating “monkey, god and human” combined Sun Wukong. The film background is lustrous and dazzling, and the illusory myth artistic conception and strong decoration taste have become one of the important factors for the success of the film. The design absorbs and refers to the expression content of temple, temple architecture and murals (such as Shanxi Yongle Palace, Beijing Fahai Temple) and the expression form of great landscape and pictures.

7 Conclusion

To sum up, Chinese traditional pattern art uses its unique eastern charm and dazzling art form to glitter in the world’s art cultural forest. Only deeply discovering the connotation of traditional pattern element can properly inherit and create classics. Deeply discovering and summarizing the form beauty, color beauty and pattern art change technique in traditional pattern into modern design can explore a broader creation idea, in order to further promote modern design culture development. Chinese designers should inherit and develop the national culture language as the task. In design, they should stand from the perspective of national cultural language to design the works to raise the emotional resonance of watchers. Also, it should better interpret and develop the native language, making it integrate with modern design. It can become an international language, to promote the Chinese feature design culture to the world and promote the powerful China to the world.
