From Academy Award?winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of a trilogy of films adapted from the popular masterpiece The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Under Jackson’s direction, The Hobbit trilogy has been shot in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Gray, the character he played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.

Plot Overview 剧情提要

The three films tell a continuous story set in Middle?earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who lives his calm and peaceful life in his comfortable hole. One day the situation is changed by the arrival of a mysterious old wizard Gandalf the Gray who is looking for someone to join him and a group of thirteen dwarves on their quest to reclaim the treasure stolen by Smaug, the most awful dragon in all Middle?earth. Their journey takes them into the Wild, through dangerous lands full of Goblins and Orcs, Wargs and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever―Gollum. There Bilbo Baggins gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle?earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know...

The Hobbits霍比特人

The hobbits are small and chubby people about half the size of humans, living in holes. Most hobbits live longer than humans. The average lifespan of hobbits is about 100 years, though few live as many as three decades beyond that. Hobbits’ ears are slightly pointed. They are skilled listeners and have good eyesight. They usually dress in bright colors and wear no shoes, because their large feet grow thick brown hair.

The hobbits are cheerful people and feel great love to good food and drink. They are never a warlike people and never fight among themselves, but they are skilled with weapons when the need arises. Most hobbits have no interest in adventure and prefer to lead a quiet, predicable life.

Living in a village named Hobbiton, Bilbo Baggins is typical of his kind. He is fond of gardening and doesn’t wish any excitement or adventure. In the beginning of the story Bilbo has a very weak character; his main features are shyness and sensitive.

Hobbit Holes霍比特人的洞府

The hobbits traditionally live in holes. In the time of the Lord of the Rings, poor hobbits live in primitive holes, rich hobbits live in luxurious holes (like Bilbo’s home of Bag End) and most other hobbits live in houses above the ground.

If you thought nearly everything in The Hobbit movies was digital, then think again. Much of it is real, like the hobbit holes.

In the scene where Bilbo talks with Dwalin, Bilbo’s living room had to be built twice: one in “hobbit scale” and one in a “wizard scale” for Gandalf, so Gandalf would appear to be too tall for his surroundings while for the hobbits it would be “just right”.

Hobbit holes are generally “real” in the movies. Hobbits hate adventure, so Bilbo’s home is full of things that make him feel safe: a warm teapot, a full larder, his favorite books.

The Director Peter Jackson导演彼得・杰克逊

Peter Jackson is one of the world’s most successful filmmakers. His greatest achievement is The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The films earned a total of 30 Academy Award nominations, winning 17 Academy Awards.

Jackson is also responsible for the globally successful 2005 remake of King Kong, which earned three Academy Awards, and District 9, which also received an Academy Award.

He also produced The Adventures of Tintin, which was directed by Spielberg. The film won, among many other awards and nominations, the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and the Producers Guild of America Award for Animated Motion Picture Producers of the Year.

In 2010, Jackson received a knighthood for his services to film.

The Author and the Books作者其人其书

The Hobbit is considered to be one of the best books written by J.R.R. Tolkien. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is a very talented writer.

He was born on January 3rd, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State. He had a poor childhood because both of his parents died when he was young. He and his brother Hilary became wards of a priest at the Birmingham Oratory. The boys attended King Edward’s School in Birmingham. At school Ronald was interested in Classics as well as Anglo?Saxon and Middle English.

Later Tolkien worked at Oxford as a professor of Anglo?Saxon. He taught Anglo?Saxon and English right up until his retirement in 1959. Actually, Tolkien was considered as one of the most gifted and clever philologists.

At the same time, he was also the father of four children (three sons and a daughter). He liked to tell his children about mythical beings―elves, hobbits, etc. At first such stories were simply fairy tales. And the first book, which made him famous worldwide, The Hobbit(published in 1937) was written in the genre of a fairy tale. The book was a huge success and the public demanded a sequel. Thus, a popular trilogy The Lord of the Rings came into being.
