Plot Summary

Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride) attempts to work his gothic magic over one of the best loved stories of all time Lewis Carroll注1’s Alice’s

Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.

Alice, now 19, attends a party at a Victorian estate, only to find she is about to be proposed to by a rich

suitor[求婚者] in front of hundreds of snooty[傲慢的] society types. She runs off, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland a place she visited many years before, yet she doesn’t remember. The white rabbit claims to have come back for Alice because she is the only one who can slay[杀死] the Jabberwock注2, the beast who guards the Red Queen’s empire. Alice remains

completely unaware of why she is in Wonderland, and is confused about the fact that she had once visited

Wonderland years before.

Now, Wonderland has changed into a darker, scarier place than it used to be. Alice then embarks on[从事,着手]

an adventure of self discovery, and to save Wonderland from the Red Queen’s reign[统治] of terror with the help of her Wonderland friends.

Johnny Depp creates another memorably

Besides his carrot top mop[乱蓬蓬的头发] , the actor

undergoes a transformation with the addition of enlarged eyes tinted[给……着色] yellow.

“He is so much fun and so nutty[古怪的]. I can’t

imagine anyone else doing it,” producer Richard Zanuck says. He also employs an accent Zanuck can only describe as “indescribable.”

Her children with Burton, Billy-Ray, five, and Nell, one, have cameos[小配角] in the movie.

Anne Hathaway’s White Queen “is beautiful, but over the top[言过其实的],” says Zanuck. A bit of a drama queen[小题大做的人], you could say.

“She doesn’t walk. She floats. She’s very eccentric[古怪的] and just as mad in her way as the Hatter.”

Wonderland was a peaceful kingdom until the Red Queen overthrew her sister. “The creatures are ready to revolt[反抗] and waiting for Alice to help them.”

“She is the real thing, very genuine[真实的]

and unique,” says Zanuck.
