desire

n. 渴望，欲望，渴求

The boy has a strong desire for knowledge.

这个男孩有着强烈的求知欲。

【注意】

desire后面的同位语从句和宾语从句都要用虚拟语气，即should+动词原形，should 可省略。

sympathy

n. 同情（心）

We feel great sympathy for this poor boy.

我们对这个可怜的孩子深感同情。

She never showed/expressed any sympathy when I was injured.

我受伤时候她从未表示同情。

Out of sympathy ， he gave me shelter for the night.

出于对我的同情，他收留了我。

【辨析】

declare 用于正式场合，清楚而有力地让人知道某件大事、要闻或官方的立场、态度。

announce 泛指宣布、通知某一消息

It was announced that there would be a celebration on Sunday.

星期天将会有一场庆祝活动。

The court declared him guilty.

审判宣告他是有罪的。

test out

实验，考验

This model had been tested out before it was out into production.

这个型号经过实验后才进行大批生产。

Scientists test out theories by experiment.

科学家用实验来检验真理。

The soldiers will be tested out under the stress of war.

战士们将要经受战争的考验。
