offer one's services as Mao Sui did-volunteer to do something
This idiom comes from Records of the Historian・Biographies of Marquis Pingyuan. During the Warring States Period, the State of Qin led a large contingent of troops to attack the capital of the State of Zhao--Handan. The Marquis Pingyuan of Zhao was dispatched as a convoy to the State of Chu to ask for help. The Marquis wanted to choose 20 attendants to go with him, but he could only get 19 suitable men altogether.
At the critical moment,a man named Mao Sui introduced himself andvolunteered tofilloutthe delegation. Then the Marquis said:"You have been here for three years already, but you didn't show anything special. So this job is not suitable for you.But Mao Sui provided many reasons to support himself, the Marquis agreed with his request reluctantly.
They arrived at the State of Chu and tried to persuade the King of Chu to send troops to help Zhao against Qin. But after a long negotiation, there was still no result.Suddenly, Mao Sui went forward with his hand on the hilt of his sword to the King and said:" A military alliance betweenChuandZhaoisclearly beneficial, why can't you make a decision?" Hearing such impolite words in public, the King was in a towering rage and shouted: "What did you come for? Get out of here!" But Mao continued his words: "The alliance between Chu and Zhao is not only good for Zhao but also for Chu. Did you forget that the State of Qin had only led a small troop to occupy your capital before?" The King was convinced and agreed to make the alliance with Zhao. Afterwards, with the State of Chu and Wei's help, Zhao forced Qin to raise a siege.
Since then the Marquis Pingyuan ws filled with admiration at Mao Sui's ability and employed him in a high post.
Now we usually use it to describe self-recommondation for the important and difficult task.
此语出《史记・平原君列传》。战国时期,秦军攻打赵国都城邯郸,赵王派其弟平原君去楚国求援。平原君准备带二十名文武随从前往,但只选中了十九人。
这时一个叫毛遂的门客站了出来,向平原君说:“听说你要去楚国请救兵,我愿凑个数。”可平原君说:“你来我家三年了,没见你有什么本事,还是留下吧。”但是经过毛遂据理力争,平原君觉得有道理,又正缺一人,就勉强同意了。
到了楚国,与楚王谈出兵助赵之事,谈了半天没有结果。这时毛遂按剑登台,对楚王说:“楚赵联合抗秦的利弊是明摆着的,为什么不早做决断?”楚王见毛遂这个地位低微的人竟敢在大庭广众之中指责自己,要让他滚下去。毛遂却从容不迫地对楚王说:“楚赵联合抗秦,并非只为赵国,也是为了你的楚国,以前秦军只率几万人马就攻下你的国都。”
楚王听后频频点头,最后当场结盟订约。不久赵国在楚国和魏国的帮助下解了围。
从此平原君对毛遂的才能十分佩服,大加重用。
后用此典比喻自告奋勇,自我推荐担任某项重要任务。
