Pingxiang――The south gate of China

Having always been called ″The south gate of China″, Pingxiang City of Guangxi is located in the south frontier of China bordering Vietnam with a border line of 97 km; while the distance apart from the capital of Lang Son Province and the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, are 17 km & 167 km respectively.The city has a down town part covering an area of 650 km2, and its total population is over 100 thousands. Seventeen nationalities, namely Zhuang, Han, Miao, Ginzu, Dongzu, Daizu, Bouyei, etc., are now taking up residence in this city; of which the minorities occupied a portion of about 85% of the city＇s total population.

Having picturesque sceneries, wonderful humanity landscapes and assembled scenic spots & historical sites, Pingxiang is a border port city of Guangxi which features the shortest distance of only 160 kilometers apart from Hanoi, the capital Vietnam, that means it can take only two hours for passengers to make their journal from Pingxiang to Hanoi.

Youyiguan Pass

Youyiguan Pass is one of the nine famous passes in China.The pass is located in Pingxiang with a distance of 18 km apart from the down town area of the city.The pass lies on a valley formed by two mountains, Zuobei and Youfu.The Zhenguan-Fort and other three forts of the Jinji Mountain undertook their guard duties by occupying the peaks on two sides.The tall and big ramparts of the city extend to the east and west and connect to the foot of the mountains on two sides, while only a highway is allowed to enter into Vietnam through this strategic pass.So, this location did have founded a strategic topography and a heavily guarded impregnable camp and so used to be regarded as an important military beachhead and the major channel of Sino-Vietnam communications.

Today＇s Youyiguan Pass has a main building of 22 m high covering an area of 180 m2.The base of the building was solidly founded by all using carefully square-shaped or rectangle-shaped stone.

Mount Jinji

With an altitude of 511 m high the Mount Jinji, which has the former name of Meijiashan, lies on the right side of Youyiguan Pass, and so it used to be called as ″Youfushan″ (This word means ″guarding from the right side″ in Chinese).

This place is well known for the famous Zhennanguan Uprising.The uprising was held on December first of 1907.During the uprising, the pioneer brigade of the Revolution Party captured three emplacements of Mount Jinjin, and then fought a seven day-and-nights blood battle under the personal command of the leader Dr. Sun Yat-sen, Huang Xing, etc., with 4000 soldiers of the kicking back troops of Qing Dynasty.In the end of the battle, only because of running out of ammunition and food supplies they were forced to withdraw to Vietnam Wen Yuan (it has the name of Dong Deng now) through footpath for the purpose of saving their revolution force.

White Jade Cave

This cave was gradually built and decorated by a famous general Su Yuanchun who was a border governor in the late Qing dynasty during the period from 1886 to 1895.The general successfully created the scenic spot by relying on the nature scene and associating with manual designing at the same time,and he did complete the marvelous spectacle in the south border of China.

Pinggonglimg―The underground city

With an altitude of 273.7 m, the underground city Pinggongling is situated at the Pinggongling Hill of Ping＇er village, Baiyun Township.Su Yuanchun had built two emplacements, namely the southern and the northern, on the peak in those years; and had dug an underground circle channel with the length of several hundred meters. .

Prosperous border trade

Beyond the memory of men, the border residents of the two countries used to have mutual trade each other, exchange goods with goods, and meet their daily demands.In China side, we did the trademainly with articles of daily use, hardware, and medicine to exchange agricultural & special local products from the Vietnam side.Many bazaars had been spontaneously set up in villages along the borderline of our side, but most of them were in the style of mobile trade.

No sooner after the liberation of our country, individual firms began to set up one after another in Pingxiang and to hold business talks with the border residents of the Vietnam side.Some businessmen delivered their goods to the France occupied zone there and then carries back Vietnamese local special products; thus, a border international trade transport line was gradually formed.

Seeking to strengthen the public security supervising, in October of 1987, based on superior approval Pingxiang assigned the Miqi village as an authorized mutual trade spot.With that, the amount of border residents coming from the Vietnam sides exceeded several times, even ten and over times of the amount in the past, while the place up and down the Miqi village was badly full up in those moment.In Marsh of 1989, based on a through study, the Party committee and government of Pingxiang made the decision, which had been approved later by the superior authority, to add four border trade spots, namely Nongyao, Puzhai, You＇ai, and Ping＇er in order and issued series of rules to supervise the border trade.According to statistic data provided by relevant departments, there were quite a large number of border residents participated the mutual trade spots, while the total amount of participants reached over 10,000 person-times a day (only in Nongyao spot the amount was 7,000), and the volume of business exceeded one-million Yuan and over.

The trade in spots involved lots of items full of beautiful things in eyes, and nearly has every thing that one expects to find.Goods imported from the Vietnam sides mainly include copper, aluminum, nickel, rubber, sleeve-fish, cuttle, chopping block, aniseed, interior eardamom, birds, and beasts, etc; the exported goods from our side mainly included bicycle, electric fan, tape recorder, sewing machine, thermos, traditional Chinese medicine, pesticide, porcelain, cloth, and stationary, etc. Trade in these four spots was conducted all night, especially the Longyao spot gathered huge crowd of people in an endless stream just to found the biggest border trade spot featuring exceeding jollification in the whole border line of Guangxi.Cars and trucks used to line up a long queue for passing in or out at lap entrances of the two countries in this trade spot and the trade business was unparalleled busy indeed.

Facing the new opportunity of development

1. Since the constructing steps of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area has been quickening, Pingxiang will play more and more an important role in the land transport channel of the China- ASEAN Free Trade Zone.

2. Owing to the set up of Pan Zhujiang Delta Economic Zone and the strategic industrial adjustment of the developed area, Pingxiang is about to be an important base for undertaking the west-orientation industrial transfer of the labour intensive enterprises in the coastal developed area.

3. Based on the startup of the ″two corridors & one circle″ project of China and Vietnam and the development strategy of ″East-oriented associating, west-oriented closing, and south-oriented extending″, which was put forward by Guangxi, the construction of Pingxiang will surely have more recognition and support from the State and autonomous region.
