Last March in Shanghai, “Shanxi plane-buying tycoon group” made the news. Soon after, Sun Guangxin, chairman of the Guanghui Group and the richest guy from Xinjiang, bought a super-size Embraer, and a Jiangsu private enterprise bought a Dassault 7X. The Chinese elites seem to have a love affair with corporate jets. This month, we see once again group buying at ABACE2013 in Shanghai.

ABASE2013 is held between April 16 and 19 in Shanghai, jointly organized by Shanghai Airport Administration and NBAA, AsBAA and the SEC (Shanghai Exhibition Centre). It is the largest business aviation fair in Asia, showcasing products and services to business leaders, entrepreneurs and other buyers and decision makers.

The official statistics have not been announced yet. But it has been reported that by the end of 2011, China had about 121 corporate jets, and the number rose to 153 by the end of 2012. 32 were added in 2012 and 29 in 2011, translating to an annual growth rate above 25%.

The China market has excited all manufacturers. ABACE made a fine start last year in Shanghai and the turnout this year is expected to be much higher. “There will be more exhibitors bringing in more planes, and more premium ones. The exhibitors take this marketing platform seriously, and see this as a great occasion to show their capability,” said an OEM professional.

ABACE2013 has announced on its official website that more than 200 exhibitors will come to Shanghai to exhibit their planes and other products. The eight major corporate jet manufacturers will present their top-range planes. Global senior executives, aviation financiers, service providers and legal professionals will come to the event. More than 30 planes will be exhibited in an outdoor space for easy comparison. There are also educational seminars on financing, procurement, operations and maintenance. Furthermore, there are going to be more helicopters, propeller aircraft and light aircraft than last year.

“This is the most visual platform for potential buyers to experience corporate jet offering and gather information. You don’t see corporate jets as easily as cars, but at the ABACE fair, buyers can inspect various planes carefully and choose a most suitable one, based on budget, operations, journey distance and other special needs,” commented an OEM professional.

Linda Peters is the vice president of NBAA looking after preparation work for ABACE2013. He told U-Jet that originally the organizers planned to use the 4,000 square meters’ hangar for exhibitors, with some space for meetings. There is so much demand that the outdoor hangar has to be used and expanded. Peters said that ABACE2013 allocates 4,800 square meters and new VIP rooms for exhibitors. And exhibitors can configure to expand VIP rooms by three times. Peters also told us that the organizers would try to shorten queues while guaranteeing security.

More and more potential buyers are inquiring about buying planes and a fair becomes a very efficient platform to address information asymmetry, and also helping OEMs to learn more about prospects and come up with targeted regional sales strategy. “The maturity of business aviation events is a sign of market maturity. ABACE is playing a fine role.”

Sources show that in 2012, global general aviation market was rather sluggish. 672 jets were delivered vs. 696 in 2011, a drop of 3.4%. Piston jet delivery also declined from 898 to 881 over the same period, a 1.9% decrease. The North American market still dominates, taking 50% market share, followed by Europe with 18%. Asia Pacific rose to accountfor 15%; and China is especially impressive, drawing the attention of global business aviation community.

“ABACE is very influential in the Chinese business aviation market. We are organizing more potential buyers to go to the event,” said Tan Jifang, sales director of Cessna to U-Jet.

Roberto Kobeh González from ICAO will be the keynote speaker this year, invited by Ed Bolen, CEO of NBAA. Kobeh said that Asia Pacific contributes the largest passenger and freight throughput in the world but has a very small market share in business aviation. He expects to discuss the future of business aviation in the region with government officials and industrial leaders.

It is well acknowledged in the industry that practitioners are very positive about the prospect in China, but it is also a fact that there are challenges and pressure in policy and route approval. A key function of business aviation is to facilitate long-distance business trips, but there are still many constraints on corporate jet movements, ground services and route development. U-Jet has met with several OEMs, who are all very optimistic about the strength of Chinese growth. Latest export data and other economic information show continuing growth.

The same report points out the polarization in business aviation in China. Small and medium aircraft are not doing so well, while large jets are having a good day. Gulfstream and Embraer both predict a good year for large jet, but are not uncertain about smaller aircraft.

Honeywell, the well-known aerospace manufacturer released a forecast for business aviation. 40% of Asia Pacific respondents intend to procure planes in the next two years. But there is also some uncertainty, in that most companies don’t have a detailed timetable, or are postponing procurement to 2017.

“The U.S. and global business aviation market shrank significantly in 2008 and 2009, just like other industries. There was some recovery after 2009 and even slow growth in 2012. And I expect steady growth in 2013,” said Ed Bolen. According to Beechcraft (formerly Hawker Beechcraft)’s investigation last year, 60% of aviation financiers interviewed expected rapid growth in business aviation in China in the next five years, markedly higher than other countries. About 30% of experts predict minor growth, while only 6% forecast a flat market. None bets on a decline.
