Key words: Vance Palmer, Love , Extramarital affair

Vance Palmer is a very important author in Australian literature, writing a number of wonderful short novels, plays and literary reviews. In the story What Is Love, he raises this question from the angel of the characters. However, he didn’t answer it. This story tells us about love, extramarital affair and marriage.

Two leading characters in this novel are chasing for true love. Marina, a married woman, suffered her unhappy and miserable marriage, is eager to get rid of the marriage without love but she can’t shake off the yoke of the traditional stereotype. She always remains hesitate and undecided. She longs for a new life, the life which many women may dream about. Nevertheless, cowardice, timidness, and nervousness come to her when her dream is nearly come true. Love is blind.

When falling into love, one may feel warm and harmonious being with the other. Love leads to a kind of relationship which could surpass all the feeling and tolerate all the defects of the other. Morrison strongly loves Marina though she married and has a son .He even helps Pietro a lot like bring him to school building his confidence teaching him how to look after himself. Morrison also brings Pietro outside and let him enjoy life.

All the elements mentioned above are about love. Love may be: a complex emotion—it is never a single feeling; an ambition; moral commitment; a private dynamic struggle; a deal; a stop sign to psychological inquiry. But, such kind of love is unhealthy, extramarital affair is not always sweet. Marina and Morrison are struggling dealing with marriage and extramarital love. The breaking of rules is like a stapler that punches through everything to bind relationships together. Sure, relationships can happen without rules, but they’re a little less dramatic, a little less passionate----a little less like love. People may cry for acceptance, holler, for tolerance, and that’s all well and good. But I would say : No more rules, no more love.
