上学的时候，老师常常希望教室里能安静得“连针掉到地上的声音都能听到”，可大家依然吵吵闹闹，而大家长大工作时，却突然都自觉自发地变安静了。可能每个人都注意到，自己有时能够工作一天却没开口说过一句话。
在英语中，常常用“pin-drop syndrome（过度安静综合症）”来形容办公室的安静程度。有专家指出，办公室内这种极度安静的状况，并不能保证工作的好效果，反而会让员工感受到巨大压力，因为任何微小的声音都有可能被放大。所以这不是什么好现象，于是，Duncan和Susan便想着要来改变一下他们办公室的这种状况。
Duncan: (whispering) Hey Susan, have you got a few minutes to talk?
Susan: Sure thing, but you don’t need to whisper.
邓肯：（悄悄地说）嗨，苏珊，可以打扰你几分钟说点事儿吗？
苏珊：当然可以啦，不过你没必要这么小声说嘛。
Duncan: I guess not. It’s just always so quiet in here.
Susan: It’s weird, isn’t it? I swear you could hear a pin drop. Duncan: And the girls around my desk are always 2)shushing me. I’m actually starting to feel a little 3)henpecked.
Susan: Bah, don’t listen to them.
Duncan: I wish it were so easy. You know, in my last company people were always chatting, ①but this is a different kettle of fish. ②It seems like everyone likes to button their lips.
Susan: Right, but then you should hear them in the lunch room! You can’t shut them up.
Duncan: So strange. But what can you do?
Susan: We could try to do something about it.
Duncan: I don’t know. ③I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Susan: Oh, ④don’t be such a Debbie Downer! C’mon, let’s bring it up at the next meeting. It really is 4)distracting.
Duncan: A little ironic, eh? Silence being distracting.
Susan: Haha, I guess it kinda is. But seriously, you’d like it to change, right?
Duncan: ⑤Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?
Susan: Alright, so why don’t we give it a shot?
Duncan: Okay, why not? ⑥Any ideas on how we could get everyone to open up a little?
Susan: Maybe we could start by playing some music. If it wasn’t so silent to start out with, maybe people wouldn’t feel the need to keep their voices down.
Duncan: Not bad. Anything else?
Susan: Hmmm…⑦how about leading by example? We’ll have to just go through the 5)mill and not listen to all the shushing.
Duncan: That sounds like it would require [1]the patience of Job.
Susan: I really think it could work if we just keep it up and don’t give in.
Duncan: Okay, and how about we 6)recruit some 7)troops?⑧Get a couple of others on board with us.
Susan: Done. We’ve got a plan! Oh, and what did you want to talk to me about in the first place?
Duncan: Oh right! Well, remember that presentation from last week…

邓肯：太奇怪了。但是你能做什么呢？苏珊：我们应该试着对此做些什么。
邓肯：我不知道（怎么做）。我不指望了。
苏珊：噢，别做这么泄气的人！来吧，让我们在下次开会时提出这个问题，这太让人分心了。
邓肯：有点儿讽刺不，嗯？安静让人分心。
苏珊：哈哈，我想是有点。但是说正经的，你想改变这种状况，对吧？
邓肯：那还用说吗？
苏珊：那好，所以我们为什么不试试呢？
邓肯：好的，为什么不？如何让大家坦诚一点，有什么想法吗？
苏珊：也许我们可以在一开始放点音乐。如果开端不是那么安静，可能人们就不会觉得需要压低声音了。
邓肯：还不错。还有吗？
苏珊：唔……带头开始怎么样？我们得经受煎熬，不要听所有那些让人安静下来的“嘘”。
邓肯：听起来这将需要极大的耐心。
苏珊：我真的觉得如果我们坚持不放弃的话是可以做到的。
邓肯：好的，我们找些同盟如何？让一些其他人也加入我们的行列。
苏珊：行。我们的计划成形了！哦，你先要跟我说的是什么事情？
邓肯：哦对啊！还记得从上周开始做的那个报告书……CS
