圣诞节的由来_英语作文

圣诞节(Christmas)是西方传统节日,在每年12月25日。弥撒是教会的一种礼拜仪式。圣诞节是一个宗教节,因为把它当作耶稣的诞辰来庆祝,故名“耶诞节”。大部分的天主教教堂都会先在24日的平安夜,亦即12月25日凌晨举行子夜弥撒,而一些基督教会则会举行报佳音,然后在12月25日庆祝圣诞节;基督教的另一大分支——东正教的圣诞节庆则在每年的1月7日。

Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. No one knows the exact date of Christs birth, but most Christians observe Christmas on December 25. On this day, many go to church, where they take part in special religious services. During the Christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate their homes with holly, mistletoe, and Christmas trees. The word Christmas comes from Cristes maesse, an early English phrase that means Mass of Christ. The story of Christmas comes chiefly from the Gospels of Saint Luke and Saint Matthew in the New Testament.

The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals(parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

Many of these traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Years. The Mesopotamians believed in many gods, and as their chief god-Marduk. Each year as winter arrived it was believed that Marduk would do battle with the monsters of chaos. To assist Marduk in his struggle the Mesopotamians held a festival for the New Year. This was Zagmuk, the New Years festival that lasted for 12 days.

The Persians and the Babylonians celebrated a similar festival called the Sacaea. Part of that celebration included the exchanging of places, the slaves would become the masters and the masters were to obey. The ancient Greeks held a festival similar to that of the Zagmuk/Sacaea festivals to assist their god Kronos who would battle the god Zeus and his Titans.

The Romans celebrated their god Saturn. Their festival was called Saturnalia which began the middle of December and ended January 1st. With cries of Jo Saturnalia! the celebration would include masquerades in the streets, big festive meals, visiting friends, and the exchange of good-luck gifts called Strenae (lucky fruits). The Romans decked their halls with garlands of laurel and green trees lit with candles. Again the masters and slaves would exchange places.

Jo Saturnalia! was a fun and festive time for the Romans, but the Christians thought it an abomination to honor the pagan god. The early Christians wanted to keep the birthday of their Christ child a solemn and religious holiday, not one of cheer and merriment as was the pagan Saturnalia.

Some legends claim that the Christian Christmas celebration was invented to compete against the pagan celebrations of December. The 25th was not only sacred to the Romans but also the Persians whose religion Mithraism was one of Christianitys main rivals at that time. The Church eventually was successful in taking the merriment, lights, and gifts from the Saturanilia festival and bringing them to the celebration of Christmas.

The exact day of the Christ childs birth has never been pinpointed. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD. In 137 AD the Bishop of Rome ordered the birthday of the Christ Child celebrated as a solemn feast. In 350 AD another Bishop of Rome, Julius I, choose December 25th as the observance of Christmas.

The birth of Jesus had a story: In Nazareth, a city of Galilee. The virgins name was Mary was betrothed to Joseph. Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband was minded to put her away secretly. In the 1800s, two more Christmas customs became popular--decorating Christmas trees and sending Christmas cards to relatives and friends. Many well-known Christmas carols, including Silent Night and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, were composed during this period. In the United States and other countries, Santa Claus replaced Saint Nicholas as the symbol of gift giving.

The word Xmas is sometimes used instead of Christmas. This tradition began in the early Christian church. In Greek, X is the first letter of Christs name. It was frequently used as a holy symbol.

策略一:主题故事活动,享受语言运用的乐趣

现行的中小学英语教材,基本上是采用题材法编写的,课文一般是一个连贯的故事,与学生的生活密切相关,符合学生的年龄特征,每一个故事都配有大量生动活泼、富有情趣的插图,对学生的学习也具有直接的功效性和教育性。

为了有效地加强中小学学生对单元主题的理解和运用,笔者以江苏省牛津中小学为依据,根据单元教学主题,创设系列故事情境,设计故事活动“四环节”组织学生表演出所学的内容,形成了综合运用单元知识的能力。故事活动的“四个环节”为:聆听故事、初步感知;模仿故事、理解内容;读讲故事、巩固所学和编演故事、运用知识。

1.聆听故事、初步感知

上课伊始,采用听指令做动作、看图听故事、音乐声中听故事等方式创设宽松愉悦的故事语境,让学生静心聆听故事。在本环节中教师把新旧知识有效地结合,通过不同形式的听力活动让学生初步感知故事,为故事学习埋下伏笔。

2.模仿故事、理解内容

运用实物、图片、头饰、投影、录像等设置真实的情境,示范讲故事,学生模仿记忆故事。创编儿歌或选择游戏如Listen and do actions、Tou chan dguess、What’s missing等方法突破重难点。教学中运用儿歌、说唱、音乐、游戏等突出故事中的重点句式,并通过体验、实践、合作、探究等方式吸引和组织学生积极参与学习和使用语言,学生诵读节奏感强的语句,易学好记。

3.读讲故事、巩固所学

听录音、看故事、读故事,整体理解故事。故事接龙,看图片或课件复述故事;图文匹配,读故事为图片选择相应的句子。

4.编演故事、运用知识

演故事可以作为一种英语课堂活动使语言教学交际化,在课堂里用英语进行交际。各组成员要积极参与、分工合作,选好自己所要扮演的角色相互配合。可节选其中的一个片段运用所学语言,发挥想象编故事;也可以整篇表演。各组要给表演小组客观公正的评价。

丰富多彩的故事活动提高了学生的兴趣,促进了中小学教学的衔接;定期开展“故事大王”“一分钟故事演讲”“故事诵读”“课本剧表演”等系列活动,增强了中小学学生英语的语感,强化对单元知识的系统梳理,有效提高运用英语的能力。

策略二:精彩节日活动,感知文化意识的异同

在中小学课堂教学中,通过系列节日活动的开展,加强中小学学生对英语学习的应用意识,理解国内外节日的异同。起初,每学期开展节日单项活动,如制作节日贺卡、写上祝福语;搜集节日相关资料,创编图文并茂的小书;查阅节日风土人情,设计手抄小报;节日故事演讲;节日主题歌曲联唱;主题板报;等等。然后,循序渐进到每学期的节日大联欢主题晚会的有序开展,开始的圣诞节日系列活动扩大到感恩节、万圣节、复活节等不同节日系列活动,起初在小学开展,范围扩大到初中,并进行了中小学的校际联谊活动。精彩节日活动创造机会让每一个学生参与到活动中来,学生主动积极参与、体验异域风土人情,感受异域文化习俗,在活动中比较和思考中西方文化的异同,理解尊重中西方文化差异,更加懂得热爱祖国文化。在系列节日活动中,在学生自己主动参与、积极体验、对比尊重文化异同中,悄无声息地完成了文化信息的输入和文化意识的习得。

策略三:外教教学活动,体验语言交际的快乐

1.礼仪教育活动,尊重文化差异

在六、七年级成立礼仪兴趣小组活动,开展形式多样的中西方交往礼仪基本知识和能力的了解和认同活动。举办中西方交往礼仪基本知识讲座;指导学生网络搜集各国交往礼仪;以中国和欧美等西方国家的交往礼仪的对比为主要内容,指导学生分角色表演;采集各国礼仪精华,开展礼仪展示活动,引导学生掌握一定的国际礼仪知识,了解异域文化,培养文化认同,学会与外教融洽相处。

2.走进外教课堂,体验学用之乐

为了进一步凸显英语特色,加强英语口语教学,提高学生学习英语的兴趣,开展了外教进课堂的英语教学活动,在近距离与外教的语言交流中,边听边理解,感受和体验外教的魅力,体验原汁原味的英籍国家的人讲英语,培养兴趣,提高英语的交际能力,感受英语学习的快乐。学校建成了专门的英语活动室,聘请了外籍英语专家,针对中小学各个年级,每周每班上一次外教英语课,感受西方文化的魅力,学习并了解西方文化,体会日常生活用语在交际用语中与正式语言应用的区别,让更多的学生愉快地接受和掌握纯正地道的英语口语,学生的听力和口语得到更好的锻炼,夯实学生的听力和口语的基础,促进学生全面而有个性的发展。

3.“英语角”活动,拓展学用渠道

六七年级开展“英语角”活动,外教教师组织开展英语口语对话、演讲、观看英文影片片段并引导学生模仿配音,或者阅读英文书籍片段,并引导他们用英文写读后感;组织学生开展英语话剧表演活动,提升学生应用英语的交流能力和文化交际技能。

4.校际联谊活动,促进中小学英语交流

建立广泛的国际交流网络,开展友好学校学生的互访交流。以“中小学联谊会”“寻根之旅夏令营”等活动为切入点,开展学生互访、艺术教育交流活动,诸如书法、绘画、京剧、排球比赛等。借助网络交流,联谊活动,中小学师生互通有无,增进了解,共同提高。

以活动为载体训练学生的英语学习策略,开展主题故事活动、精彩节日活动、外教英语教学活动等不仅架设了中小学过渡的桥梁,而且增强了学生用英语做事情的能力,让不同层次的学生都能在活动中得到锻炼,展示自己的风采,增强自信心,提升应用英语的交流能力和文化交际技能,为终身学习奠定基础。

一、问题的提出

《英语课程标准(2011年版)》指出,在外语教学中,文化是指所有语言国家的历史地理、风土人情、传统习俗、生活方式、行为规划、文学艺术、价值观念等。在学习英语的过程中,接触和了解外国文化有益于对英语的理解和使用,有益于加深对中华民族优秀传统文化的认识与热爱,有益于培养国际意识。由此可见,我们不能只单纯地教授语言,更要在教学中进行文化渗透,扫清交际过程中出现的误会和障碍。英语教学是语言教学,当然离不开文化教育。在英语教学中,我们要注重语言和文化的关系,树立文化意识并注重文化知识的传授,让语言插上文化的翅膀,让学生在实际生活中正确运用语言,从而减少语言交流的障碍,提高跨文化交际能力。

二、文化渗透所涉及的内容

译林版小学英语五、六年级教材中新增Culture time板块,主要介绍了中西方文化之间的差异以及英美国家英语表达上的微妙差异。涉及的内容有中西方餐具、早餐、饮品、信封写法、送礼和收礼以及喜欢的体育运动等方面的差异。此外,还介绍了英美国家的主要节日及其庆祝方式、著名文学作品、道路通行制、参加西方国家聚会的礼仪以及著名旅游景点等。译林英语新教材增设Culture time板块,充分体现了我国对于文化渗透的重视,而这又与新版课程标准互相呼应。《英语课程标准(2011年版)》规定,6年义务教育结束时,小学生的文化意识应达到二级标准,具体如下:

1.知道英语中最简单的称谓语、问候语和告别语。

2.对一般的赞扬、请求、道歉等做出适当的反应。

3.知道世界上主要的文娱和体育活动。

4.知道英语国家中典型的食品和饮料的名称。

5.知道主要英语国家的首都和国旗。

6.了解主要英语国家的重要标志物,如英国的大本钟等。

7.了解英语国家中重要的节假日。

8.在学习和日常交际中,能初步注意到中外文化异同。

三、在小学英语教学中进行文化渗透的措施

在小学英语教学中,面对刚刚接触英语的小学生,怎样才能在实施教学的同时,进行文化渗透,增加学生对异国文化的认识呢?笔者结合译林版小学英语教材,认为应当通过以下三方面入手。

(一)充分运用教材,在日常语言教授过程中适当渗透外国文化的学习

好的教材是根据学生的年龄特征编排的,是符合学生的心理发展规律和学习规律的,对日常教学内容有一定的导向和辅助作用。教师应当在日常教学中,针对不同的教学内容,渗透适当的外国文化。

1.词汇渗透。词汇是语言中最具生命力和活力的成分,它最能体现社会的和时代的变迁。许多词汇在长期的积累和使用中,具备了丰富的文化含义。由于中西方文化的巨大差异,有些英文词汇与中文词汇并不能一一对应。若想恰当地运用这些词汇,先要很好地理解它们的文化含义。“dog”一词,在中国文化中多为贬义,如“狗腿子”“走狗”等,而在英美人眼中的狗却是人类最忠实可靠的朋友,有“clever dog”(聪明的小孩)、“lucky dog”(幸运儿)、“love me,love my dog”(爱屋及乌)等常用词语。颜色词在中西方文化中所代表的含义也不尽相同。如“brown bread”(黑面包) 、“green hand”(生手)、“black tea”(红茶)、“blue water”(大海)等。因此,在英语学习时,绝不可望文生义,引起交际上的误会。教师在日常的教学中,可根据教学内容适当拓展具有不同文化含义的词汇。

2.课文渗透。译林版小学英语课文的内容主要是围绕英语交际活动来展开的,既与学生的日常生活紧密相连,又体现出中西方文化的差异。如译林英语五年级下册第八单元Birthdays一课,通过谈论Mike和Su Hai过生日,意在让学生了解中西方不同的生日风俗习惯。如西方人一般会举行派对,吃蛋糕,许愿,唱生日歌,当场拆礼物等。而中国人过生日一般会和家人团聚在一起吃大餐,吃长寿面。在学生充分感知中西方庆祝生日的不同方式后,根据学生的年龄特点和心理特点,笔者设置了“我的生日我做主”的活动,学生可以选择中西方任意一种过生日的方式来庆祝自己的生日。很多学生选择了西方国家庆祝生日的方式,这也是学生对西方文化的一种认可和学习。教材中适合角色扮演的任务还有很多,如春游,过节,看病,问路和指路等。我们知道,“运用”是课堂语言教学的基本环节之一,而它的典型示范就是“角色扮演”。Harmer 提到,“运用”是语言在“真实世界的排演(Harmer,2000)。”通过“角色扮演”,可以初步提高小学生结合英美国家文化,恰当使用语言的意识,增强文化敏感度。

(二)利用重要的节假日,让学生真实直观地感受外国文化

语言教学的最高境界就是对于该国文化的学习。而最能代表文化,反映民族习惯的是各种节日,因此,英语国家的节日是英语口语教学中重要的一部分。《英语课程标准》二级文化意识的教学目标中提到了“了解英语国家中重要的节假日”。在学习译林英语五年级上册Unit8 At Christmas时,笔者要求学生搜索一些西方节日的资料,例如Christmas, Easter,Halloween等,让学生先去了解这些节日的时间、来历、风俗习惯,做好预习工作。为了营造学习语言的氛围,笔者在课前,将教室的环境布置成了Christmas Day的感觉,把圣诞节的代表性的标志贴在教室的黑板上、墙上。在课堂上,笔者设计了一张任务型表格,让学生自己分组讨论,自由发挥。然后,引导学生将之与中国的春节对比。学生发现,圣诞节是英语国家最重要的一个节日,就像春节是中国人心中最重要的节日一样。而且,两者有着许多的共通之处,如:圣诞大餐和除夕团圆饭,赠送圣诞礼物和收发春节礼包、红包等。在师生的热烈交流中,学生也兴致勃勃的学了相应的一些单词、词组:Merry Christmas,Santa Clause,Christmas tree,Jingle bells,make cards,give presents,open presents,get presents,eat turkeys,visit Grandma and Grandpa.在轻松愉悦、真实的情境中,不仅激发了学生学习英语语言和英语国家文化的兴趣,而且培养了他们合作、探究的学习态度。此外,教师还可以结合所学的节日,组织开展一些后续活动。如Christmas这一节日可以让学生做圣诞卡片送给家人和朋友,Easter可以教学生作复活节的彩蛋,Halloween可以让学生学做南瓜灯,结合课文内容,让学生在动手活动中感受西方节日的文化气息。

(三)引导学生通过网络平台等资源途径,学习外国文化

处在一个飞速发展的信息化时代,通过电视电脑网络,我们就能感受到外国的文化氛围。因此,教师可以引导学生通过网络,了解外国文化。结合教材内容,指导学生通过听英语广播,观看原版英语电影等形式,直观快速有效地理解和领会相关的文化知识,提升英语听力水平。笔者在平时的教学中,充分利用网络作业平台“一起作业网”上的资源开展教学。在学生学完每个单元的知识点后,笔者布置了适量的网络作业――绘本阅读。绘本阅读的内容跟所学教材的内容息息相关,也是对课文内容的拓展和延伸。此外,笔者也向学生推荐阅读体现外国文化的简易读本,以增加对英语文化的了解;组织英语社团、英语角、英语晚会等,创设形式多样的语言环境,加深对文化知识的实际运用。

总之,文化教学是语言课堂中的一道营养大餐,它可以使学生拓展思维,开阔视野。因此,在今后的小学英语教学中,我们教师应设法通过多种途径,不断改进教学方法,在教学中有意识地向学生渗透文化教学。让学生在习得语言的同时,感受到文化的魅力和世界的多彩,从而培养他们跨文化交际的意识,提高学生英语语言的综合运用能力。
