Swedish Trade Moving West

The Go West project, initiated by the Chinese central government at the beginning of the century, is now entering the Go West 2.0 era. The project aims at an economic balance between the developed eastern regions and the poorer west. Huge infrastructure investment, including a high-speed rail network and modern airports with direct international flights to other Asian destinations and Europe, are connecting inland China to the rest of the world like never before.

The major ‘migration’ of international companies into inland China started around five years ago when rising competition and costs in the coastal area started to become an issue. The companies began to set their sights on the market potential of inland China, as well as the access to favorable incentives like labor and low wages. Take Chengdu for example: Today, 207 of the Fortune Global 500 businesses are present in the city. Swedish investments in inland China range from manufacturing giants like ABB, Ericsson, and Volvo to retail tycoons like H&M and IKEA.

As Torbjorn Sternsjo, CEO of Sapa Chalco Aluminium Products (Chongqing) Co. Ltd. states “looking into the dynamics in the long term business development in China, we are convinced that we will see a shift of manufacturing industry moving from the eastern part of China to southwest. This is also something that you can see going on right now.”

A survey conducted by Swedish Trade Council among Swedish companies already operating in western China shows that the most common intention of those companies is to take advantage of opportunities in the local market and favorable political incentives and establish strategic alliances.

Founded in 1972, the Swedish Trade Council has offices in 60 countries and conducts over 3,000 projects every year serving the Swedish government and Swedish businesses globally.

With nearly 40 years of experience in business development and with a constant presence in the world’s most promising markets, we are a dependable partner for all Swedish companies that wish to boost their business in the international arena. We essentially provide all the services required to establish a company and its products, services or ideas in new markets.

The Swedish Trade Council is now staffing up in Chengdu, Greater China’s sixth economic hub. “The Swedish Trade Council′s presence in Chengdu will facilitate business for Swedish companies and boost Swedish trade in the western part of China,” said Van Hoang, the head of STC East China.
