体操运动员丹•米尔曼拥有众多大学生梦寐以求的东西：家境富裕，学习优秀，相貌英俊，而且有机会代表国家参加奥运会比赛。但他总是害怕某天会失去眼前的一切。后来，丹在加油站遇到了一位老人（因为这位老人经常说出发人深思的话，所以丹就叫他苏格拉底），后者敏捷的身手给丹留下了深刻印象。就像冥冥中注定一样，一场严重的车祸使丹的双脚骨头严重碎裂。当所有人都认为丹的体操生涯已经结束时，老人却鼓励他继续训练，并从旁指导。在这个过程中，丹渐渐明白了人生的意义，奇迹也发生了―丹不但走出腿伤的阴影，还奇迹般地重返赛场，实现了人生的梦想。
本片根据丹•米尔曼的小说Way of the Peaceful Warrior改编（小说灵感来源自作者的亲身经历）。该小说自出版以来鼓舞了成千上万人坚持自己的梦想。
Meeting Socrates?
Dan: I train seven days a week, fifty weeks out of the year.
Socrates: Why so much?
Dan: Are you serious? I am a heartbeat[心搏，比喻十分接近] away from qualifying.
Socrates: Qualifying for what?
Dan: You watch the Olympics?
Socrates: No.
Dan: Look, even as good as I am, I gotta do everything I can to make sure that I qualify.
Socrates: There’s a lot you would have to know before you could understand what you saw.
Dan: Go! Ask me. Ask me something. Ask me anything.
Socrates: Are you happy? You said I could ask you anything.
Dan: What does happy have to do with anything?
Socrates: Everything!
Dan: My dad’s got plenty of cash. School’s kind of a breeze[轻而易举的事]. I get straight “A’s” I got great friends. I’m in great shape[身段].
Socrates: So why can’t you sleep at night? Yesterday you came here at 3AM; now tonight. That’s two nights in a row[连续].
Dan: What are you, some kind of a quirky[古怪的] mark philosopher or something like that?
Socrates: Do you need some philosophy?
Dan: No, thanks, Socrates. I get enough at school.
Socrates: Last question. If you don’t make the Olympic team, what will you do?
Dan: If I don’t what?
Socrates: You must have thought about it.
Dan: What the hell are you talking about?
Socrates: What’s the problem?
Dan: I don’t even know what I’m doing here. You’re a freak, and I don’t need you freaking me out.
丹：我每周训练七天，一年训练五十周。

苏格拉底：你需要一些哲学道理吗？
丹：不，谢了，苏格拉底。我在学校已经学得够多了。

苏格拉底：你一定想过这个问题。
丹：你究竟在胡说什么？

“You should continue your training as a gymnast.”
Socrates: When you feel fear, use this sword. Take it up here and cut the mind to ribbons[碎长条]. Slash[猛砍] through all those regrets and fears, anything else that lives in the past and the future.
Dan: I want to be able to do that. I think I’m ready.
Socrates: Ready for what?
Dan: Devoting my life to a higher purpose.
Socrates: Really?
Dan: Service to others, right? Nice to be me now. I’ll do everything I should.
Socrates: Alright.
Dan: Alright.
Socrates: I think you should continue your training as a gymnast. A warrior does not give up what he loves, Dan. He finds the love in what he does.
Dan: Look at me! Look at me. I have a metal rod[棒] in my leg.
Socrates: A warrior is not about perfection, or victory, or invulnerability[不会受伤害]. It’s about absolute vulnerability[脆弱性]. That’s the only true courage.
Dan: What kind of training do you think I could do? I just had an accident.
Socrates: The accident is your training! Life is choice! You can choose to be a victim or anything else you’d like to be.
Dan: Just ignore[忽视] what happened to me?
Socrates: A warrior acts. Only a fool reacts.
Dan: Well, what if I can’t do it?
Socrates: That’s in future. Throw it out.
Dan: Well, how would we start?
Socrates: There’s no starting or stopping, only doing.

“You are something exceptional.”
Socrates: Nearly all of humanity[人类] shares your predicament[困境], Dan. If you don’t get what you want, you suffer. And even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer, because you can’t hold on to[坚持] it forever.
Dan: You thought I couldn’t do it.
Socrates: Doesn’t matter. You don’t need him注 or any ladder to get up on those rings and do what you like.
Dan: Yes, I do! Alright, I’m talking about getting up there and winning the gold right now, so yes, I do.
Socrates: The gold is a craving[渴望]. “If only I had it I’d be happy!”Can’t you hear it in there?
Dan: It’s a dream, Soc. I can’t think that dreams are bad.
Socrates: You don’t surrender[放弃] your dreams, Dan. You surrender the one thing you never have and you never will ?control. Accept that you don’t control what happened to you, that you may or you may not compete in the Olympics. That you may or you may not, Dan, and that you are something exceptional[杰出的] either way.
Dan: I was ready to give this all up, but you’ve stood here, and you told me that you wanted me to train again!
Socrates: I told you a warrior does what he loves.
Dan: And this is what I love!
Socrates: Chasing gold, living in fear that you might fail? That’s what you love about it?
Dan: No! Dreaming of standing up there and winning this thing……Of doing what has always felt like the thing that I was put here to do. I’ve been on a trampoline[蹦床] since before I could ride a bike, because I loved it!’Cause it was the first thing……that I was sure……that I loved. I’m sorry. Okay. I’m sorry. I thought I was strong, but I’m not,’cause I really tried to give this whole thing up……but I can’t.
苏格拉底：几乎所有人都会遇到和你一样的困境，丹。如果得不到想要的东西，你会很痛苦；就算得到了想要的东西，你仍然会痛苦，因为你无法永远拥有它。
丹：你觉得我办不到吗？

丹：不对！我热爱的是站在比赛场上获胜的梦想……做我一直觉得注定有所为的事情。在会骑自行车之前我就整天在蹦床上跳来跳去，因为我热爱它！因为那是第一件事……第一件我确定是……自己热爱的事。我很抱歉。好吧，我很抱歉。我以为自己足够坚强，但其实不是，因为我真的试过要放弃一切……但是我做不到。
The journey, not the destination……
Dan: Hey, uh, please tell me we’re getting a little closer. Come on, Soc. It’s been three hours, man.
Socrates: Now, we’re here.
Dan: We’re where?
Socrates: Where what I came to show you.
Dan: The view?
Socrates: There, next to your foot.
Dan: The flower.
Socrates: Nope[不是].
Dan: Better not be.
Socrates: The rock.
Dan: There’s something……there’s something special about this rock?
Socrates: Something wrong?
Dan: Oh, come on, Soc. This is... this is what I was finally ready to see?
Socrates: Well, the whole trip up here you were excited. You were happy.
Dan: Yeah, because I though I was gonna see something!
Socrates: You were like a kid on Christmas morning. You said so yourself. The whole trip up here made you feel good.
Dan: Because for the past three hours I’ve been waiting to see this wonderful thing.
Socrates: Well what changed?
Dan: That there’s nothing here but this rock!
Socrates: I probably should have told you that before we left, huh? But, I guess, I wasn’t sure what we’d find either. Never am. Sorry you’re not happy anymore.
Dan: The journey……The journey’s what brings us happiness, not the destination[目的地].
丹：嘿，请告诉我我们正在接近目的地。拜托，苏格拉底，已经三个小时了，老兄。
苏格拉底：我们到了。
丹：到哪里了？
苏格拉底：我要带你看的地方。

苏格拉底：那现在有什么不同吗？
