BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

Geekdom is agog, as is corporate India. And all it took for them to shout ‘Jai Ho’ was the entry, officially, of Apple’s iPad into the country. After its launch abroad last year, the iPad had become a device that is coveted by executives and fashionistas alike. But while Indians waited, it seemed Steve Jobs would never ship the tablet Indiaward. Until, months before the rumoured second iteration of the iPad is to be released, it made landfall. We must be speaking for a whole community of iPad hopefuls when we say that though it was late in coming, but come it did, and it’s time to pick up the tab.

UPPER CRUST

The build quality gives this tablet an edge over the rest. Like other Apple products, iPad also has the same unibody design and the sturdy aluminium built. The 9.7-inch touch screen does not cover the entire frame, but in standby or off mode gives an illusion of being one. The IPS touch screen is glossy, but a good wipe cleans it easily. There are just three physical buttons on the tablet—Power, Volume and Lock. Everything else is accessed from the touchscreen itself.

FINAL WORDS

Apple took time releasing the iPad here. However, it has been worth the wait. A competitive price, amazing performance and a huge app support make the iPad the king of all the gadgets—at least in the computing world. Go and grab one. But if you are not in hurry, wait to see if all that speculation about Apple iPad 2 is true or not. As of now, this is the real deal.

WONDERFUL WORKER

On the 64 GB 3G + Wi-Fi version running the iOS 4.2, the applications load up swiftly. The touchscreen reacts smoothly to each swipe, pinch or tap. The iPad’s screen can play 720p movies but we had to convert our HD content to an iPad compatible format. Most video formats were not supported. The H.264 video format is the best bet for playback. Movies and videos undoubtedly look good on its large screen.

What was left for us was to download a couple of our favourite games (Angry Birds HD, being one of them) and check them out—and no disappointments there. The games looked beautiful, loaded faster. We also downloaded a couple of books to read on the tablet and enjoyed the experience. We enjoyed reading the e-version of G&G(available on ) for a negligible price.

BAG IT OR JUNK IT?

You can wait for the next version or buy this one. It’s your call.
