John lives in a small town. He has a shop in which he sells books. He's busy all the time and his wife does all housework.

One day Mike, his little son, caught a cold. His wife sent him to the hospital. The doctor looked over the boy and told him to be in hospital. His wife had to look after him there. He was worried about his son, but had no time to go to see him. That night he went to bed very late but couldn't soon fall asleep. About an hour later, as soon as he went to sleep, the telephone rang. He got up at once and held receiver(听筒) up and said," Hello,who's that?"

"Can't you hear who's speaking here,John?"a woman laughed and said.

"Oh, Mum," said John,"What has happened to you?"

"Nothing, dear," said the woman," It's your birthday today."

"Have you given me a call in the middle of night only to tell me about it?" John asked in surprise.

"Yes,my dear,"said the old woman,"You got me up thirty years ago and I want to get you up at this time today!"

Mr Read lives in Sydney. His house is about four kilometres far from his factory and the bus can take him there. He likes football very much and wants to watch the football matches. Of course he doesn't have any money to buy the tickets.

This morning, when he was having breakfast, he heard a piece of news over the radio:the bus fares were going to drop in price(价格). He hurried to turn it off, but it was too late. His wife asked," What did the radio say?"

He had to tell her all he heard. Then he became sorry and said,"What a pity!"

"You must be happy, I think," said the woman. "You'll save some money."

"Sorry, I can't agree with you," said Mr Read. "I'll watch two matches short a month !"

Mr Clarke works in New York and three weeks ago he brought his family to China. They visited many places of interest and had a good time here. That evening they didn't have supper. Mr Clarke hoped to make them happy and said,"Well. Let me tell you a story. An old man lived in a sixty-storey(层) building. One day he fell down from it when he was cleaning the window. But he didn't hurt himself."

"It was a miracle(奇迹) !" called out his children. "Why?"

"Because he lived on the first floor!"

They all began to laugh while two policemen with a bag came in. They said a Chinese boy found it under the big tree and he asked them to find out who lost it.

"It's really a miracle!" the Clarkes said happily.
