Having been through the violence and conflict, as well as the natural disasters, President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, made a speech with all his heart, telling people that "we look back with sadness, but we look forward with hope". He said, "Sri Lanka is ready to make its mark. Our troubles are behind us and we look forward to welcoming the world. As scientist and writer Arthur C. Clarke said of his second home, this is the best place in the world from which to view the universe."

On November 19th, 2010, Mahinda defeated his main component, former Prime Minister Wickremasinghe as Sri Lanka's President with tiny superiority of 50.29%. Mahinda took the oath of assuming office in the capital of Colombo and started his second session as President since 2005. He committed at his inauguration speech that, he will try to make Sri Lanka a country with no "underground organization, drugs or crimes". For ecological safety, this tough President also attached great importance. He, for many times, called on regions in Asia to jointly seek for opportunities of development and cooperation and deal with challenges in economic development with Asia's traditional wisdom towards the way of sustainable development.

Political path of the re-elected president

Mahinda, who is 69 years old, was born in Hambantota in the south of Sri Lanka and he is a Sinhalese who believes Buddhism. He grew up in a celebrated family of politics. His father was Deputy President of Sri Lanka parliament and one of the founders of Liberal Party, the ruling party and his uncle was senator of Hambantota. Mahinda has studied in Richmond College, Nalanda College Colombo and Thurstan College, and done jobs like guest performer in movies and library assistant in colleges. When his father passed away, only 24-year-old Mahinda was elected into the parliament as a candidate of Liberal Party and the youngest one at that time. Later he studied in the Law Institution of Sri Lanka and got the lawyer certificate after graduation. The media of the country said, different from other politicians, Mahinda had not studied abroad or received western education, which can make him closer to ordinary people in the state.

The political life of Mahinda closely relates to Liberal Party. He was again elected as senator of the party in 1989 and worked as the secretary of human right committee. In 1994, the "People's Alliance" led by Liberal Party won in parliament election and Mahinda became Minister of the Ministry of Labor and Occupation Training and then Minister of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. In October, 2000, he worked as Deputy President of Liberal Party and the leader of it in 2002. In April, 2004, he became Prime Minister of government and Minister of Highways. With the experience in these periods, this politician who is regarded as the one "doomed to change Sri Lanka's history" by local people was elected as the President in 2005.

Unswervingly pushing forward the peace process

Being the President is just a new beginning for Mahinda. To lead Sri Lanka to the real peace and prosperity, he has to resolve some difficult problems. The constant domestic race conflicts for over 20 years are the top issues that block the country's development and it's the urgent affairs for the new president to retain the cease fire situation with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

When Mahinda assumed the office, he started to carry out a series of policies that put people in the first place, which including promising to defeat terrorism, promoting democracy and easing long-term national conflicts and splitting terrorism by negotiation; all these policies provide social and democratic solutions for some economic and social problems, guarantee continuous social welfare like free medical care and education and finish the privatization of state-owned departments. He also promised to rapidly develop infrastructure and stabilize rural economy. He pointed out to protect environment and encouraged people to use traditional ideas like humanity and humanitarian way to treat animals.

Concerning about ecology and safety of Asia

Mahinda not only devotes himself to safeguarding a peaceful society, but also cares about ecological safety, especially the ecological circle made up by Asian countries. It needs more attention, in his opinion. Therefore, in diplomatic respect, he especially pays attention to the cooperation and communication with other Asian countries and focuses on environmental protection while pushing forward peace process. He has been President of the Sri Lankan Committee for Solidarity with Palestine for 25 years. He holds close attention to and interests in how to find peaceful solutions in serious Middle East issues for Palestine. In January, 2014, Mahinda was granted the highest honor medal of "Palestinian Star" when visiting the country for his contribution to the development of the two states' friendly relationship. He also strengthened the cooperative relationship with China. He visited China for many times in his session and promoted the relationship to the strategic one and delivered united communique. In recent years, the bilateral trade between China and Sri Lanka has had consistent growth and not only has achieved results in economy, but also built further arrangement and cooperation in ecological safety. The China-Sri Lanka joint seashore belt and maritime research and development center was built, which made great contributions to enhancing the overall management ability of ocean and seashore belts, strengthening mutual research on ocean and atmosphere, promoting environmental protection of seashore belts and oceanic ecology, developing blue economy and realizing regional prosperity and stability.

Mahinda thinks Asia is an inseparable integrity, whose development is based on environmental sustainability and protecting environment is just a part of Asian civilization and values. He pointed out at the opening assembly of annual meeting of 2008 Bo'ao Asian Forum that, when Asia is entering a new century full of hope, its energy demand is also on the rise. He said, "We are consuming more and more fossil fuel and emitting more and more greenhouse gases. The consumption of resources and emission of wastes put people in front of unprecedentedly severe consequences." Therefore, Mahinda appeals that when keeping economic sustainable development, it needs to find sustainable energy, clean producing process and sustainable consuming pattern. He believes besides the improvement of infrastructures through various ways, the investments in education should also be added, "by high level education, to lead people enjoy harmonious coexistence with natural environment." As a member of Asian family, he calls on people to integrate the wisdom of this area and seek for possible energy combination to find the best development mode for the developing countries. He also warns that, "We need to keep cautious. While developing replaceable fuels, we should not over-occupy poor people's land; when massively using oil and gas that are not well for the environment, we should not forget there are people who are suffering from hunger. Development must be sustainable and suitable for our conscience.

In the 2013 International Coference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) Special Session, Mahinda again stressed that, "Industrialization should keep balance with environmental protection. To develop renewable energy by kinds of measures within the limits of nature and fully use solar energy, hydro energy and wind energy." The appealing of the President not only lets Sri Lanka, the beautiful island country go on a road of sustainable development, but also reminds the entire Asia or even the world: ecological safety is the basis for our survival and development, and we should try our best to safeguard and maintain the sustainable development of ecology. Just as Mahinda's tough attitude towards terrorism, he strongly believes that, "it needs to treat environmental deterioration like treating wars", and he calls on countries to find a point of balance between economic development and environmental protection to jointly boost the prosperity of Asia.
