THE 10th Global Travel and Tourism Summit will convene in Beijing from May 25 to 27, 2010, hosted jointly by the China National Tourism Administration and the Beijing Municipal People’s Government. This yearly event of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) is the premiere gathering of the world’s travel and tourism industry leaders.

The WTTC, founded in 1990, is the global forum for business leaders in the travel and tourism industry. Its members include approximately 100 presidents and CEOs of the world’s leading tourism-related businesses, representing airlines, travel agencies, online retailers, cruiser companies, investment companies, hotels and transport carriers.

As the sole member of the WTTC on China’s mainland, the Beijing Tourism Group (BTG) has played a crucial role in bringing this world event to Beijing; its massive and efficient preparatory workconvinced the WTTC to select Beijing as its host for 2010.

The BTG is considered the “flagship” of the Chinese tourism industry, and has provided meritorious services for many important national and international occasions, such as the Beijing Olympic Games, Fortune Forum, China-Africa Cooperation Forum and the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

As a major patron of this year’s WTTC summit, the BTG will undertake reception service duties. The group leadership greets all the hard work involved as an opportunity to enhance the competence and reputation of the company. It has set up a special panel to oversee conference accommodations, transportation, logistics and tour services for the participants.

Family members of the BTG have been motivated by the international conventions run by their counterparts. The Beijing International Hotel, the Aman at Summer Palace, Beijing Hotel, Raffles Beijing Hotel, Grand Hotel Beijing, and Hotel New Otani Chang Fu Gong will provide accommodations and have planned various customized services. BTG’s transportation companies have mobilized to deliver their clients safely and quickly to their destinations. BTG International Travel & Tours will take charge of local reception. The BTG has also arranged a tourism investment talk, keynote speeches and roundtable meetings for the summit.

The tourism sector has developed rapidly over the past few decades and grown into a strategic pillar industry of China. The national tourism revenue has been increasing at an average annual rate of 12 percent, which is higher than the nation’s GDP growth. In 2009 the number of China’s outbound and inbound tourists surged respectively to 40 million and 47 million.

The WTTC

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization founded in 1990 and headquartered in London. As the only international institution that represents tourism and travel businesses around the world, it has a broad vista on the global tourism and travel industry.

The WTTC has the following characteristics:

First, it is a global organization; its membership is composed of tourism- and travel-related establishments, businesses and groups from over 100 countries and regions.

Second, it is a joint effort between local governments, businesses, and research institutions, and boasts involvement by the world travel industry’s top experts. The WTTC receives the unwavering support of the governments and tourism administrators of various countries; it has active participation by the world’s tourism and travel industry leaders and operates a cooperation program with Oxford Economics.

Third, it is a comprehensive organization; its council members represent the complete span of the tourism and travel industry business chain.

Finally, it represents the unchallenged authority of the industry. The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), a statistical accountant framework for tourism businesses sponsored by the WTTC, has been widely adopted and used as a reliable resource by many nations. In 1999 the United Nations recognized the TSA system as a major standard for the measurement of the economic impact of the tourism industry.

Because of its influence, the annual WTTC Summit attracts many cities to compete for its host status each year.

The BTG

The Beijing Tourism Group is the sole member of the WTTC from China’s mainland. A leader of the Chinese tourism industry, the BTG operations include hotels, retailing and catering businesses, travel services, transportation, and tourist site management. Its current assets exceed RMB 28.55 billion. It owns more than 10 tourism brand names, such as the BTG-Jianguo Hotels & Resorts, Home Inn, Quanjude (Beijing roast duck chain), Donglaishun (halal restaurant chain), Yansha (shopping malls), Antique City, China Comfort Travel, BTG International Travel & Tours, and Shouqi (buses and cars).
