Fresh Fruit Ice Cream

Famous Ice Cream

Mozamjahi Market

The handmade fresh fruit ice cream is typically available all year round, but during the summer, naturally, it is a big highlight. I love the mango and custard apple flavours. The shop has been around since I was in school and I remember making regular trips with my family.

Kebabs

Bade Miyan Kababs

Tank Bund

I first went to their outlet when I was still in school. I must have been barely nine when I went there with my family and since then it has become a tradition. If any of my friends are new to the city, I insist on taking them there, for they have the most delicious kebabs. My favourites are chicken tangdi kebab, mutton boti kebab and melt-in-the mouth patthar kebab which is so soft that you have trouble lifting it properly. They make them fresh and you can sit by the garden and relish.

Biryani

HyderaBad House

Banjara Hills

This is an old chain and has amazing Hyderabadi food. Whenever I go back to Hyderabad, I always call in and get their mutton biryani home delivered. This biryani is definitely one of the very best I have eaten in the city. My visit to Hyderabad is not complete unless I have had a meal from here. They have opened restaurants across the country, but the food you get at their outlets across Hyderabad is far ahead of the others.

Andhra Food

Southern Spice

Banjara Hills

Southern spice is one of the best places in the city to gorge on traditional andhra food. Their thick mutton curry, which is made in red chilies, is dynamite but simply delicious. I can carry on eating it even though I have water streaming down my eyes and my mouth is on fire. Other favourites are tamarind rice and curd rice and of course the good old andhra thali is something you just cannot miss.

Haleem

Nizam Club

Saifabad

This colonial club, which started during the British raj, is famous for the haleem that they serve. Haleem is mutton stew that is made by pounding mutton and wheat together. Traditionally it is cooked on slow fire for 12 hours and being a true Hyderabadi, I love the mutton dishes. I grew up in a Hyderabadi muslim household and my parents loved food, so this dish was made at my home too. Very often I used to sit on the kitchen counter and watch the cook prepare these elaborate dishes. Hyderabadis put in red meat into practically every vegetable. Try torai methi gosht, palak gosht, tamatar gosht, all of it is quite delicious. The mutton biryani, mirchi ka salan, nihari gosht and paya are a few other dishes that are also worth trying at the nizam club.
