英语易混词汇举隅

有些英语词汇的字面意思与实际意思并不相同，经常会产生错误的理解，甚至会闹出笑话来。本文以列举的形式向英语爱好者对这类词汇做一简单介绍。

1.sweetbread是“胰脏”，而不是“甜面包”。

例：Sweetbread is an important organ in our body. 胰脏是我们身体中的一个重要器官。

2.writing brush是“毛笔”，而不是“刷子”。

例：Nowadays, there are few people using writing brush.现在很少有人用毛笔了。

3.small potato是“小人物”，而不是“小土豆”。

例：Small potato also can do unusually things.小人物也可以有大作为。

4.big potato是“大人物”，而不是“大土豆”。

例：Meeting a big potato like Cheng Long is my dream.见成龙这样的大人物是我的梦想。

5.couch potato是“电视迷”，而不是“沙发土豆”。

例：As our relatives know, my cousin is a couch potato, and she is always lost in it. 正如我的亲戚所知，我的表妹是一个电视迷，她经常对它入迷。

6.the Fourth是七月四号的“美国独立纪念日”，而不是简单的“第四”。

例：The Fourth is a special day when American gained independence.美国独立纪念日是一个特别的日子，那一天，美国人获得了独立。

7.pull one′s leg是“愚弄某人”，而不是“拉后腿”。

例：It is a bad behavior to pull other′s leg. 愚弄别人是一种不好的行为。

8.the Four Tigers是“亚洲四小龙”，而不是“亚洲四小虎”。

例：Singapore, which is one of the Four Tigers of Asia, had made great progress in economy. 亚洲四小龙之一的新加坡在经济上取得了很大的发展。

9.cast pearls before the swine是“对牛弹琴”，而不是“给猪扔珍珠”。

例：Don′t talk to him, or you′ll find you cast pearls before the swine.
