引导学生欣赏英语语言的幽默

摘 要：教师在英语教学中，要引导学生欣赏英语语言的幽默。

法国浪漫主义作家雨果说：“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from human face.”中国有句古语：“笑一笑，十年少。”异曲同工，二者说的都是幽默在我们生活中的重要作用。

不同的语言文字，不同的文化背景，不同的生活习惯，使不同的民族产生不同的文字幽默（Verbal Humour）。很多情况下，通过翻译，我们可以用一种语言理解另一种语言的幽默。请看普通高中课程实验教科书（英语・人教版）模块4第三单元介绍的两则英语文字幽默：

Teacher： You say that John Jones has a cold and can not come to school today. Who am I speaking to？

Voice：Oh， this is my father.

老师：你说约翰琼斯感冒了，今天不能来上学。那么谁在跟我打电话？

约翰琼斯：我父亲在跟您打电话。

Customer： What’s that fly doing in my soup？

Waitress： Swimming，I think！

顾客：请问这只苍蝇在我的汤干什么？

服务生：我想，它在游泳吧。

尽管是英语的文字幽默，译成汉语，同样可以博得我们一笑。

但是，由于英语和汉语的语言词汇完全不同，句子结构差异又大，不少英语的文字幽默只能通过英语语言才能“意会”，很难，甚至无法用汉语来“言传”。

请看下面的对话：

Customer： Waiter，will the pancake be long？

Waitress： No， sir. It will be round.

问者问的是时间，应者答的是形状，风马牛不相及。如果译成汉语，你还能幽默吗？

下面的对话也无法用汉语来“言传”其幽默：

Customer：What’s that？

Waitress：It’s bean soup.

Customer：I don’t want to know what it’s been. I want to know what it is now.

如果说，我们无法用汉语来传达三个“has gone out”所表达的幽默，但是，我们至少可以把它译成意义连贯的汉语。如果我们将后面的对话译成汉语，肯定是“语无伦次”的对话，更不用说将It’s bean和it’s been所表达的幽默传达出来。

我们继续欣赏另外一段英语幽默故事。请注意画线单词的含义：Once a professor at Glasgow University put up a notice，which read，“Professor Black will meet his class tomorrow.”This means that he was going to give his students a lecture the next day.

One naughty boy of the class saw the notice and wiped away the first letter of the word“class” in the notice. Then the sentence became “Professor Black will meet his lass tomorrow”， which means the professor would meet his girl friend. Seeing this， the professor didn’t take it seriously. He， then， simply left out another letter of the word. Finally， the word“class” was turned into “ass”， which means， as we all know，“a stupid donkey.” Overall， the student hadn’t surpassed the teacher.

中课程实验教科书（英语・人教版）模块4第五单元“Reading For Fun”中为我们提供的材料，类似于我们汉语的脑筋急转弯：

1.What do you get when you cross a car with a sandwich？

A traffic jam！

2.Why did the man feed his dog a watch？

He wanted a watchdog.

如何才能“意会”这些英语语言的文字幽默，相信我们的学生应该不言而喻了吧！不努力学好英语，我们如何欣赏“We park our

cars on driveways and we drive our cars on parkways！”这句话所蕴含的诙谐和俏皮？
