China Telecom Shanghai Branch has already launched a new project to provide better broadband service for Shanghai to contribute to the development of the city.

Shanghai has several titles: City of Fashion, City of Dynamic and so on. Now, a new title is crowned upon Shanghai the City of MONET.

This title comes from China Telecom’s “Metropolitan Optical Network” (MONET) which was officially launched on April 8, 2010. This program was developed by China Telecom for answering to the national information technology development strategy as well as Shanghai’s plan of developing into an international financial center and an international shipping center. It is also a pivotal part of the cooperation between China Telecom and Shanghai government in the information technology field.

When publishing the program of “MONET” in June 2009, China Telecom introduced the plan of “accessing 100Mb bandwidth to each household, 1Gb bandwidth to each building and 1Tb broadband output”, which will be realized in 3 years. From then on, China Telecom began to promote the construction of high-speed network service.

China Telecom plans to make its “MONET” cover 1.5 million households in Shanghai in this year. The international broadband output will be increased from 180Gb in 2009 to 280Gb. The domestic broadband output will be increased to 1.8Tb from 1Tb.

What changes will the “MONET” bring about to the Shanghai people? Right now, the users of China Telecom Shanghai Branch could enjoy the 2Mb-bandwidth broadband. During the World Expo, China Telecom will provide the broadband with 100Mb or even 1Gb bandwidth for the pavilions and office buildings in the World Expo Park, enabling the visitors and exhibitors to enjoy the IPTV, VOIP, video conference and the other Internet services quickly and fluently.

The application of “MONET” also puts an end to the era when the household Internet users had to endure the net speed measured by “kb”. Once the project is finished, the ordinary householders can download a movie in only a few minutes.

This program is also of great importance for the development of Shanghai, especially Shanghai’s goal of building an international financial center and an international shipping center. On April 28, 2009, China Telecom signed an agreement with the Shanghai municipal government, which implied further deepening of their mutual cooperation in the information technology. China Telecom agreed to invest 6 billion yuan (USD 879 million) in upgrading the fundamental facilities of information and communication in Shanghai and provide consolidated support for Shanghai’s construction of “two centers”.

It is known that Shanghai’s broadband output reached 1.2Tb, making Shanghai the first city with the broadband of more than 1Tb. Meanwhile, the high-speed Internet, as well as the international and domestic satellite ground stations, makes Shanghai one of the core cities of broadband output in the world.

The construction of “MONET” in Shanghai is a process featured with industrial agglomeration and innovation. The application of new Internet technology will promote the development of manufacturing of chips, digital devices and terminals,etc.. The convergence of PSTN, cable network and the Internet can generate new business models and further promote the development of the industries of software and information technology. It also helps to lower the corporate operation costs by boosting the e-business.

China Telecom Shanghai Branch is confident in inspiring the customers’ demands for the comprehensive information services through ceaseless innovations in operation and service. With more and more high-quality services delivered to the customers, China Telecom Shanghai Branch will make more contributions to the development of Shanghai.
