Yao Ming is widely known in China. He was born on September 12nd, 1980 in Shanghai. His father, played basketball, and his mother also played basketball. Although both of Yao Ming’s parents were professional basketball players, they did not expect their son to follow in their footsteps.“My parents would probably prefer me to go to college and play basketball only as a hobby,” Yao Ming once said.“I like history and archaeology. I wish I could visit Egypt.”
Yao Ming began to receive regular basketball training when he was only 9 years old. During the following years of hard training, Yao Ming developed both his basketball skills and confidence. His first coach remembers Yao Ming not liking basketball much at the age of 9 and being able to run only four laps around the court. “Don’t be discouraged,” he’d told Yao Ming,“You do four times today, five times next week and six times the week after that. That is how to improve, with little steps.”
By 14, Yao Ming joined his local youth team―the Shanghai Oriental Sharks. He joined the Houston Rockets in November, 2002. He became the first one to join a foreign team. He said this was a new start in his basketball career. He would do his best to learn from the NBA and improve himself. Sports expert Bill Walton said, Yao Ming has the ability of changing the future of basketball.
